White Skeleton Contemplation

The White Bones Contemplation is this: Strip away the skin, flesh, blood, and sinews of the body entirely, until the bones rest one upon another, white as conch shell or snow, radiating light in the same way. If you cannot see this, consider a leper. The physician tells the family, "If you can make her drink something that looks like milk but is actually blood, she will be cured." So the family makes everything in the house white, puts blood in a silver cup, and tells her, "Drink this milk, and you will certainly get better." The leper says, "This is blood." They reply, "It is a white substance that heals. Don't you see that everything in this house is white? Because of your karmic defilements, you see it as blood. Just focus your mind on the idea of milk, and do not call it blood." In this way, after seven days, the blood changes into milk. How much more so for actual whiteness—why would you be unable to see it? Once you see the skeleton, observe within this skeleton: the arising and ceasing of the mind is like a thread stringing pearls. Everything you perceive, including observing the bodies of others, is the same. If you wish your mind to settle, practice diligently without giving up. This is like drilling wood for fire—you soon see smoke. Or like digging a well—you soon see dampness. You will surely achieve your goal before long. When the mind is still and settled—whether your eyes are open or closed—the light bones will be clearly visible. This is like still, pure water: you can clearly see your reflection. When the water is murky, the reflection is unclear. When the water is completely dry, there is no reflection at all.
