摩訶毘盧遮那如來金鼓說,口開舌舉震法界宮殿,蓮華臺藏世界諸如來出定,即以摧破地獄滅七遍之殃,起教菩薩說五字祕密,是五字者阿鑁覽唅欠。
The Great Vairocana Buddha proclaimed with a golden drum: When his mouth opened and his tongue moved, it shook the palaces of the Dharma Realm. The Tathagatas of the Lotus Pedestal Treasury World emerged from meditation, and thereby destroyed the hells, extinguishing the calamities of the seven cycles. Rousing the bodhisattvas to teach, he revealed the secret of the five syllables: These five syllables are A, Vaṃ, Ra, Ha, Kha.
The syllable "A" is the lord of the Vajra family, governing the liver. The syllable "Vam" is the lord of the Lotus family, governing the lungs. The syllable "Ram" is the lord of the Jewel family, governing the heart. The syllable "Ham" is the lord of the Karma family, governing the stomach. The syllable "Kham" is the lord of the Space family, governing the spleen.
Mountains, seas, and the great earth arise from the syllable "A." Rivers and all streams flow from the syllable "Vam." Gold, jade, treasures, the sun, the moon, stars, fire, pearls, and light are formed from the syllable "Ram." The five grains, the five fruits, and the blooming of all flowers are bound together by the syllable "Ham." Fragrant plants, beautiful people, celestial nourishment, colors, flavors, dignified appearance, blessings, and wealth are adorned by the syllable "Kham."
The syllable "A" is Akshobhya Buddha of the East. The syllable "Vam" is Amitabha Buddha of the West. The syllable "Ram" is Ratnasambhava Buddha of the South. The syllable "Ham" is Amoghasiddhi Buddha of the North. The syllable "Kham" is Vairocana, the Great Sun Buddha of the zenith.
The syllable "A" embodies profound emptiness and stillness—it cannot be grasped, nor can it be abandoned. It is the mother of all phenomena, the great king of empowerment. This "A" syllable is the most difficult teaching to believe; practitioners of the Lesser Vehicle and Vinaya masters should not be shown this text.
The five families' Sanskrit texts, comprising four hundred thousand words, originate from the *Vairocana Sutra*. The *Vajrasekhara Sutra* extracts their essential wonders. Among all fields of merit, these five-syllable mantras are the supreme. The merit gained by reciting them is immeasurable, inconceivable, and inexpressible.
Contemplating their true nature brings blessings, strengthens the body, and forever wards off calamities, illnesses, and suffering, nurturing longevity. If these five syllables are inscribed on a drum and the drum is struck, the sound will be heard far and wide, spreading vigorously for a thousand miles. Crops will flourish, and people will be free from disasters and epidemics. This is the contemplation of the unborn nature of the Tathagata.
These five-family mantras are the precious nectar of immortality, the supreme medicine of Buddha-nature, offered by all Buddhas. A single syllable entering the five organs prevents all illnesses. How much more so for those who cultivate sun and moon contemplations—they will instantly realize the Buddha's body of emptiness and stillness.
These five syllables—A, Vam, Ram, Ham, Kham—are the Dharma-body mantras. If one recites them once daily, or seven times, twenty-one times, or forty-nine times, the merit accrued from a single recitation equals that of reciting all sutras a million times. Moreover, entering meditation through these syllables, contemplating the syllable "A" with clarity like the sun illuminating the sky, is to directly perceive Buddha-nature. The merit gained is beyond compare.
The secret treasury of these words is truly inconceivable. Yet, I fear that Sravaka masters and practitioners of the Lesser Vehicle may doubt and disbelieve, thereby increasing their karmic obstacles. It is like a king who dearly loves his youngest child and spares no treasure from the royal vault, yet withholds a sharp sword, fearing the child might misuse it and harm himself. Thus, the Tathagata secretly transmits this teaching to great bodhisattvas, not to Sravakas of lesser wisdom.
阿金剛地部一(阿字作地觀、金剛座觀,形四角色黃,大圓鏡智,又名金剛智)。
The Golden Vajra Earth Realm(The syllable "A" represents the earth visualization and the vajra seat visualization. Its form is square with a yellow color, symbolizing the great mirror wisdom, also known as vajra wisdom.).
鑁金剛水部二(鑁字作水觀、蓮華觀,形如滿月色白,妙觀察智,又名蓮華智亦轉法輪智)。
Vajra Water Section Two(The character 'Vam' is used for water meditation and lotus meditation. Its form is like a full moon, white in color, representing the wisdom of subtle observation, also known as lotus wisdom or the wisdom of turning the Dharma wheel.).
覽金剛火部三(覽字作日觀,形三角色赤,平等性智,亦名灌頂智)。
Observe the Vajra Fire Division Three(The character "observe" is visualized as the sun, triangular in shape and red in color, representing the wisdom of equality, also known as the wisdom of empowerment.).
唅金剛風部四(唅字作月觀,形如半月色黑,成所作智,亦名羯磨智也)。
The Vajra Wind Division of Ha(The syllable "Ha" is visualized as a moon, shaped like a half-moon and black in color. It represents the Wisdom of Accomplishment, also known as Karma Wisdom.).
欠金剛空部五(欠字作空觀,形如滿月色,種種法界性智)。
Missing the Vajra-Emptiness Section Five(The character 'missing' represents the contemplation of emptiness, its form like the color of the full moon, the wisdom of the nature of all dharmadhatus).
Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Space—these are the seeds of the Five Wheels, embodied by the five syllables: A, Vaṃ, Raṃ, Haṃ, and Khaṃ. First, there is the Earth Wheel. Above the Earth Wheel rests the Water Wheel. Above the Water Wheel rests the Fire Wheel. Above the Fire Wheel rests the Wind Wheel. Above the Wind Wheel rests the Space Wheel.
Within the Space Wheel, visualize the syllable Haṃ. It appears deep and dark, gradually expanding and spreading wide. Upon the Wind Wheel, visualize the syllable Vaṃ transforming into the Water Wheel. Above it, visualize the syllable Pra, golden in color, transforming into a golden turtle. On its back, visualize the syllable Su, which then transforms into the majestic Mount Meru, composed of four precious substances. Also, visualize the syllable Khaṃ transforming into golden mountains, encircling it in seven layers.
In the sky, visualize Vairocana Buddha, from whose pores flow fragrant milk, raining down between the seven golden mountains to form an ocean of fragrant milk endowed with eight virtues.
In your mind, envision atop the summit of Mount Meru the syllable Śrī, transforming into an eight-petaled lotus that pervades the entire Dharma realm. Upon this lotus is the syllable A, transforming into a jeweled pavilion with eight flowers and eight pillars, vast and boundless, adorned with all kinds of exquisite and wondrous precious gems.
Sixty Ganges’ sands of kotis of Buddhas, along with heavenly dragons, the eight classes of beings, and inner and outer offering bodhisattvas, surround this Dharma realm palace.
Further, visualize the syllable Rī transforming into a great lotus leaf, upon which rests a mandala. On the mandala is a lion throne, and upon the lion throne is a lotus king. Above it is a pure, full moon disk, and upon the moon disk is the syllable Śrī, transforming into a wondrous moon-like great lotus. Upon it is the syllable Vaṃ, radiating great light that illuminates the entire Dharma realm. All suffering beings of the three realms, six destinies, four modes of birth, and eight difficulties, touched by this light, attain liberation.
This syllable Vaṃ transforms into a stūpa, in shapes square, round, triangular, half-moon, and circular—formed by the five great elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Space.
This stupa transforms into the Great Vairocana Tathagata. His body is the color of the moon, and he wears a crown of five Buddhas. He is adorned with exquisite, fine celestial garments and jeweled ornaments. His light universally illuminates all realms of the ten directions. He rests upon a moon disc, surrounded by the Four Buddhas, the Four Paramitas, the Sixteen [Bodhisattvas], the Eight Offerings, the Four Embracing [Bodhisattvas], the thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa, the Twenty Deva Kings, and immeasurable, boundless bodhisattvas with their retinues.
The Four Buddhas are: * Akshobhya Buddha, the Vajra-Solid Self-Nature Body. * Ratnasambhava Buddha, the Body Adorned with Merit and Virtue. * Amitabha Buddha, the Body of Enjoying Wisdom. * Shakyamuni Buddha, the Emanation Body.
The Four Paramita Bodhisattvas are: * Vajra-Paramita Bodhisattva * Ratna-Paramita Bodhisattva * Dharma-Paramita Bodhisattva * Karma-Paramita Bodhisattva
The Sixteen Bodhisattvas are: * Vajrasattva Bodhisattva * Vajraraja Bodhisattva * Vajraraga Bodhisattva * Vajrasadhu Bodhisattva * Vajraratna Bodhisattva * Vajrateja Bodhisattva * Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva * Vajrahasa Bodhisattva * Vajradharma Bodhisattva * Vajratikshna Bodhisattva * Vajrahetu Bodhisattva * Vajrabhasa Bodhisattva * Vajrakarma Bodhisattva * Vajraraksha Bodhisattva * Vajrayaksha Bodhisattva * Vajrasandhi Bodhisattva
The Eight Offering Bodhisattvas are: * Vajralasya Bodhisattva * Vajramala Bodhisattva * Vajragita Bodhisattva * Vajranritya Bodhisattva * Vajradhupa Bodhisattva * Vajrapushpa Bodhisattva * Vajraloka Bodhisattva * Vajragandha Bodhisattva
The Four Embracing Bodhisattvas are: * Vajrankusha Bodhisattva * Vajrapasha Bodhisattva * Vajrasphota Bodhisattva * Vajravesha Bodhisattva
Having thus visualized these retinues, with a mind of realization purified, one's own mind becomes the Buddha. All marks are perfected, and one attains Supreme Wisdom, fully endowed with the sacred circle of the Thirty-Seven Deities. Then, one visualizes in space: all Buddhas, as numerous as sesame seeds, fill the entire realm of empty space.
Contemplate the body attaining the Ten Grounds. The syllable "VAM" transforms into the water of great compassion, intended to sprinkle and cleanse me and all sentient beings' Bodhicitta ground. It washes away the defilements of the one hundred and sixty discursive thoughts, completely severing afflictions and karmic stains. Then, without abandoning this body born from one's parents, one manifests in this very body the attainment of the great, enlightened fruit of Buddhahood.
Further contemplating the body's inner ocean, at its base lies the syllable "PRA," golden in color. This syllable transforms into a golden turtle, representing the Buddha-nature. Upon the turtle rests the syllable "SU," which transforms into the majestic Mount Sumeru. Upon the mountain is the syllable "A," which transforms into a wondrous, multi-colored Vajra ground. Upon this ground is a thirty-eight-cubit bodhimanda.
The syllable "AM" transforms into a three-tiered jeweled palace of mani gems, representing the three realms of Desire, Form, and Formlessness, adorned with the seven treasures. Within this exquisite palace is a ten-cubit altar, representing these ten dharma realms. At the center of this altar is the great lion throne of enlightenment.
Within the throne is the syllable "A," which transforms into a four-cubit *siddha* stone, representing the profound mandala. This profundity signifies the aspiration for enlightenment, the practice, and the attainment of nirvana. Upon it rests a great white lotus flower.
Upon the lotus is the syllable "A," which transforms into the Dharmakaya body of Mahavairocana Tathagata, who proclaims the syllables "A, VA, RA, HA, KHA." These five syllables transform into the bodies of the Five Wisdom Tathagatas, which further transform into the bodies of the Eight Petals and Nine Deities, and then into the bodies of the Five Great Wisdom Kings.
Mahavairocana Tathagata transforms into the syllable "HAM," which transforms into a sword, which then transforms into the body of Acala Vidyaraja. The Wisdom King transforms into the great dragon *Kulikara*, manifesting a wrathful appearance entwined with a sharp sword. The Dragon King transforms into the two messengers: the messengers *Kimkara* and *Cetaka*.
是五字者是名祕密悉地也,亦名成就悉地,亦名蘇悉地。蘇悉地者,遍法界成就佛果證大菩提,法界祕密言,光明遍滿,唯佛與佛能入此門,緣覺聲聞不能照此,亦名祕密悉地。若誦一遍,當如轉一切經一百萬遍。祕密悉地者,從心至頂。祕密悉地即法身成就,即是三種常身正法藏。是故稽首禮毘盧遮那佛:
These five syllables are known as the Secret Siddhi, also called the Accomplished Siddhi, and also called Susiddhi. Susiddhi means the universal attainment of Buddhahood throughout the Dharma Realm, the realization of great enlightenment, the secret words of the Dharma Realm, the light that fills everywhere. Only Buddhas can enter this gate; Pratyekabuddhas and Śrāvakas cannot illuminate this. It is also called the Secret Siddhi. If one recites it once, it is equal to turning the entire canon of scriptures one million times. The Secret Siddhi extends from the heart to the crown of the head. The Secret Siddhi is the accomplishment of the Dharma Body, which is the threefold eternal body, the true treasury of the Dharma. Therefore, I bow in reverence to Vairocana Buddha.
稽首毘盧遮那佛, 開敷淨眼如蓮華,
三界調御天人師, 大菩提心救世者,
深妙真言加持法, 流入無生阿字門。
I bow to Vairocana Buddha, Who opens pure eyes like lotus blossoms, The teacher of gods and humans, guiding the three realms, The great enlightened mind, the savior of the world, Through profound mantras and empowered methods, Flowing into the unborn realm of the syllable "A."
阿字如阿摩羅識,阿摩羅識體阿梨耶識,用阿字含藏萬法,猶如藏識含諸法也。故毘盧遮那四字含四教義,九重月輪表八葉九尊。
The syllable "A" is like the Amala consciousness. The Amala consciousness is the essence, while the Alaya consciousness is its function. The syllable "A" contains all phenomena, just as the storehouse consciousness holds all things. Thus, the four syllables of "Vairocana" encompass the teachings of the four schools, and the nine-layered moon disk represents the eight-petaled lotus and the nine honored ones.
文殊真言下品悉地:
Manjushri's True Words: Lower Level of Siddhi
「阿羅波遮那」 一字「唵慈臨」(二合),萬事通用,是名出悉地,能生根莖遍滿四方,誦一遍如轉藏經一百遍,出悉地從足至腰。
The mantra "Oṃ Ciliṃ" is universally applicable for all matters. This is called the "Emergence of Siddhi," which can cause roots and stems to spread and fill the four directions. Reciting it once is like reciting the entire canon a hundred times. The emergence of siddhi extends from the feet to the waist.
