The *Dhāraṇī Sutra of the Hearts of All Buddhas*, translated by Master Xuanzang during the Tang Dynasty, is an important esoteric Buddhist scripture. This sutra originates from the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra* system, with dhāraṇī mantras at its core, expounding the supreme merits and methods of recitation of the heart mantras of all buddhas. Historically, it reflects the spread of esoteric Buddhism in China during the Tang Dynasty and Xuanzang's contributions to the translation of Sanskrit and Chinese classics. Its primary content consists of the heart mantras spoken by the Buddha and their functions of protection, dispelling calamities, and awakening, emphasizing the integration of the dharma gate of sound with the Wisdom (Prajñā) of perfect wisdom. Within Buddhism, this sutra is regarded as a crucial foundation for esoteric practice, merging exoteric and esoteric teachings, promoting the development of the Mahāyāna Buddhist mantra system, and exerting a profound influence on the esoteric sections of Chinese Buddhism.

Buddha-Heart Dharani Sutra

Translation by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Xuanzang, by Imperial Decree

Thus I have heard:

Thus have I heard. At that time, the Bhagavan dwelled within the realm of a Tathagata's perfection, a sacred grove of countless treasures. This was a sanctuary cherished by all Buddhas, a place of joy for them, and a wondrous palace for bodhisattvas whose wisdom knew no hindrance or doubt. It was adorned with every delicate and exquisite ornament, constantly resounding with the melodies of the Dharma—a great hall of infinite virtue.

Accompanied by an uncountable host of great bodhisattvas—all of whom were true spiritual offspring of the Tathagata's Dharma body, having gathered from various Buddha-lands—as well as countless devas, humans, asuras, and other beings, the Bhagavan sat surrounded by a great assembly of noble truth-realizers.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the great bodhisattvas, saying: “Good men! There is a dhāraṇī called the ‘Heart of All Buddhas,’ which has been taught by as many buddhas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River. It can widely benefit all those who are afraid. If someone sincerely upholds, recites, and chants it with utmost devotion, they will transcend the intense suffering of birth and death for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. They will surely be able to practice swiftly toward supreme enlightenment, never regressing, and until achieving that perfect enlightenment, they will never be born in a world without a buddha. They will always clearly understand all dhāraṇīs, constantly see the Tathāgata, draw near and make offerings to him, always remember their past lives, and deeply believe in the law of cause and effect. It will enable them, in the present life, to have all harm from humans and non-humans eliminated, to be free from illness without dying prematurely, and to have all demonic deeds completely destroyed. All their evil karma will without exception be removed, and all demon armies will be terrified and flee. Good men! The words and phrases of this dhāraṇī are praised by all buddhas together—it is itself the words and phrases of all buddhas. You should listen carefully. The dhāraṇī is:

"Buddha, Subuddha, Mahabuddha, Ekabuddha, Tathagatabuddha, Buddha Buddha, Samabuddha, Asambhidharma, Mridubuddha, Buddha's Wisdom, Buddhamati, Mahabuddhabuddhamati Buddha, Sarvabuddha's Anugata, Sarvabuddha's Anujnata, Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha Buddha, Ananda's Buddhaveshya, Ananta's Dharmadashana, Ekanta's Matanashaka Lakshmi Shodhana, Dharmabhavana Ekanti, Sarvabuddhashri Dharanim, Sambhara Kashtam, Anugaksha, Bhaya Sattvanaam, Sarva Dharmanaam Mutarachani, Tadyatha: Chare Shuchare Shodhani, Samshodhani, Nirmale, Mala Avakashi, Gatihi Samantagati, Garantee, Garlami, Garlama Shashakelishasamati, Shuke Vishuke, Shukashevamuni, Shane Upashane, Prashanta Avabhasa, Sarva Pumya Pari prayukti, Sarva Dharma Pratimanchit, Hara Hara, Mala Hara, Chela Chela Samchela Chela, Acala Acala, Samcala, Trai Trai Samtrai, Samantranili, Nili, Sunili, Hrileenamati, Lokadare, Lokadharani, Dhara Dhara Tara Tara, Ghuruta Ghuruta, Mahavijaya Bhasini, Hana Hana, Sarvabuddhashri Chari, Sarva Prashuddhi, Vajra Paramee, Mahapratibhanasampanna, Samanta Loce, Buddhaveshaya, Dharmachari, Bhagavati, Shara Shara Parishara Parishara, Sarvavishara Abhagagati, Svaha."

After the Buddha had fully spoken this Dharani—the great and majestic heart of all Buddhas—in that very moment, the entire great trichiliocosm, including the earth, the oceans, and Mount Sumeru, trembled simultaneously in eighteen ways. All the heavenly palaces shook and swayed. The demon armies, wicked and rebellious, lost their brilliant power. They looked at each other in terror and panic, trembling with fear and worry.

Then, all those in the trichiliocosm who were destined for liberation, witnessing this extraordinary sign, cried out in shock. Only the heavenly beings who had taken refuge in the Three Jewels rejoiced with great delight. They offered heavenly flowers, scattering them toward the Buddha from afar, and urged the demon armies to take refuge in the Buddha and his teachings.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bodhisattvas, saying: "I now, out of compassion for all sentient beings, proclaim this dhāraṇī to free them from suffering and calamity. You should recollect it properly and spread it throughout the world, so that all may receive and uphold it, thereby attaining benefit and happiness."

Then all the Bodhisattvas and the rest of the assembly were overjoyed, accepted the teaching with faith, and respectfully put it into practice.
