Sutra of the Nine Grades of Rebirth, Amitabha Samadhi and Dharanis
特進試鴻臚卿大興善寺三藏沙門大廣智不空奉 詔譯

爾時毘盧遮那如來於大三摩地門大精舍，與大比丘眾八萬九千人俱，皆是大阿羅漢，慧善具足所作皆辦，其名曰：神力智辨觀世音菩薩、得大勢菩薩、神通自在王菩薩、淨光無垢陀羅尼菩薩、大力普聞菩薩、大莊嚴力菩薩、無量光菩薩、慧善慧普光王菩薩，如是等大菩薩、聲聞大眾，往詣佛所，白言世尊：「無量壽國在九品淨識三摩地，是即諸佛境界如來所居，三世諸佛從是成正覺，具足三明增長福慧。其九品境界，上品上生真色地，上品中生無垢地，上品下生離垢地，中品上生善覺地，中品中生明力地，中品下生無漏地，下品上生真覺地，下品中生賢覺地，下品下生樂門地，是名曰九品淨識真如境。是內坐十二大曼陀羅大圓鏡智寶像，其名曰一切三達無量光佛、遍覺三明無邊光佛、智道三明無礙光佛、六真理智三明無對光佛、色善三明光炎王光佛、一覺三明清淨光佛、普門三明歡喜光佛、入慧三明智慧光佛、光色三明不斷光佛、明達三明難思光佛、五德三明無稱光佛、智力三明超日月光佛。如是諸佛如來是真色具足，一切三世如來悲相所依。若有眾生欲往生如是九品淨土、奉視十二圓妙，日夜三時稱如是九品淨土名，讚十二光佛號，即永出三界火宅，定生真如，離有漏永入無漏。若人欲入如是三摩地境，具足佛慧淨心潔身，觀念大三摩耶實相真言。呪曰：
At that time, the Buddha Vairocana, in the great samadhi hall, gathered with eighty-nine thousand great bhikshus, all great arhats perfected in wisdom and virtue, their work complete. Their names were: Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of spiritual power and wisdom; Mahasthamaprapta, the Bodhisattva of great power; the Bodhisattva of sovereign spiritual powers; the Bodhisattva of pure light and stainless memory; the Bodhisattva of vast power and universal renown; the Bodhisattva of great majestic power; the Bodhisattva of infinite light; and the Bodhisattva of radiant wisdom and virtue. These great bodhisattvas, along with the assembly of shravakas, went before the Buddha and said: "World-Honored One, the Land of Infinite Life is the Samadhi of the Nine Grades of Pure Consciousness, which is the realm of all buddhas and the dwelling of the Tathagata. All buddhas of the past, present, and future attain enlightenment from this place, perfecting the three insights and increasing merit and wisdom. The nine grades: the highest-grade highest-birth Land of True Form, the highest-grade middle-birth Land of Stainlessness, the highest-grade lowest-birth Land of Purity, the middle-grade highest-birth Land of Awakening to Goodness, the middle-grade middle-birth Land of Radiant Power, the middle-grade lowest-birth Land of No Leakage, the lowest-grade highest-birth Land of True Awakening, the lowest-grade middle-birth Land of Noble Awakening, and the lowest-grade lowest-birth Land of Joyful Gate. These are called the nine-grade pure consciousness realm of suchness. Within this sits the twelve great mandalas of mirrored wisdom and precious images. Their names: the Buddha of infinite light with all super-knowledge; the Buddha of boundless light with universal understanding; the Buddha of unobstructed light with wisdom of the path; the Buddha of unopposed light with truth and wisdom; the Buddha of blazing light with excellent form; the Buddha of clear light with unified awareness; the Buddha of joyful light with universal approach; the Buddha of wise light with entry into wisdom; the Buddha of constant light with radiant form; the Buddha of inconceivable light with brilliant realization; the Buddha of ineffable light with five virtues; and the Buddha of light surpassing sun and moon with wisdom power. These buddhas are the true form in its fullness, the foundation of compassion for all buddhas of the three times. If any sentient being wishes to be reborn in this nine-grade pure land and behold the twelve wondrous forms, they should praise the names of the nine-grade pure land and invoke the twelve light-buddhas three times each day and night. Thus they will forever escape the burning house of the three realms, be surely reborn in suchness, leave the realm of leaky existence, and enter the realm of no leakage. If one wishes to enter this samadhi state, to fully attain buddha-wisdom with pure mind and body, they should contemplate the true meaning of the great samadhi and recite this true mantra: OM, I take refuge in the Buddha of infinite life and light, radiant in great virtue, wisdom, and spiritual power. May the pure wisdom of suchness in all its grades be attained.
「唵阿密㗚哆帝濟伽藍吽
Om Amitabha, protect the Sangha, Hum.
「善男子！如是真言梵呪，此坐一切十方三世諸佛如來究竟理智十二空願根本。若我弟子欲利樂三界饒益人天，書寫此經受持讀誦者，增長福樂、增益智慧辨才、增長壽命色力、消除業障消滅萬病、增長悲愛，無不具足色善，何況至心書寫讀誦者，度三世無生變三界火宅，所誦得往生極樂界會九品淨土。」爾時大眾聞佛所說，皆大歡喜，信受奉行。
"Good man! This mantra of true speech is the very foundation of the complete, ultimate wisdom and the twelve kinds of emptiness-vows of all past, present, and future Buddhas and Tathagatas. If my disciples wish to benefit the Three Realms and help both humans and gods, they should copy this sutra, uphold it, recite it, and study it. Doing so will increase happiness and good fortune, enhance wisdom and eloquence, extend life and strengthen health, eliminate karmic obstructions and cure all illnesses, and foster loving-kindness. They will lack nothing in virtue and goodness. How much more so for those who sincerely copy and recite it — they will transcend the three phases of birth and death, transforming the burning house of the Three Realms, and through their recitation they will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, joining the assembly of the nine grades of the Pure Land."
Then the entire assembly, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced greatly, and faithfully accepted and put it into practice.
九品往生阿彌陀經
Nine Grades of Rebirth in the Amitabha Sutra
建久四年四月八日，於栂尾山以勸修寺慈尊院阿闍梨御房御本書寫校訖 寬超之本。 享和改元秋八月，請求智山慈順僧正御本令寫便，校以印版。瑜師阿彌陀大心抄云「此大心呪，出無量壽軌並九品往生經。」又云「軌說大心呪勝能云，乃至九品往生經說同之。」住心論愚草云「九品往生阿彌陀經云，此是阿彌陀如來根本大呪真言，纔誦一遍者，則身中十惡五無間罪一切業障皆悉消滅云云。」然此本唯有小呪，無大呪說，定知脫大呪文。有文中不隱暢，讀者應知，更待全本。
Kenkyū 4th year, 4th month, 8th day: Collated and copied at Toganoo, using the manuscript of the Ajari Go-bō from Kanshū-ji Jison-in. This is Kankō’s copy.
In the first autumn month of the Kyōwa era, I requested the venerable Jijun Sōjō of Chizan to lend me his manuscript, had it copied, and then proofread it against the printed edition.
Yūshi’s *Amida Daishin Shō* says: “This Great Heart Mantra is found in the *Muryōju Kugi* and the *Nine-Grade Rebirth Sūtra*.” It also says: “The esoteric text describes the supreme power of the Great Heart Mantra; the *Nine-Grade Rebirth Sūtra* says the same thing.”
The *Jūshin Ron Guso* says: “The *Nine-Grade Rebirth Amitabha Sūtra* states: ‘This is the fundamental Great Mantra of Amitabha Tathagata. Reciting it just once erases all evil karma, including the ten evil deeds and the five grave offenses.’”
However, this copy contains only the short mantra and lacks the Great Mantra passage. Clearly the Great Mantra text is missing. The meaning is incomplete in the text. Readers should be aware of this and await a complete edition.
