The Text on Receiving the Five Precepts and the Eight Precepts is a lost yet significant Vinaya scripture of Chinese Buddhism. Its author is unknown, and it is estimated to have been composed between the Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Tang Dynasty. The text systematically explains the precept forms, the ceremonial procedures for receiving them, and the merits of upholding the Five Precepts for lay practitioners and the Eight Precepts of the Uposatha. It embodies the core spirit of Mahayana Buddhist discipline. As a key text in Chinese Buddhist precept-conferring ceremonies, it not only guided the practice of devotees but also profoundly influenced the sinicization, transmission, and development of Buddhist precepts. It remains an important reference for studying the Vinaya thought of Chinese Buddhism.
