羂索成就品第六之一

Chapter 6, Part 1: The Accomplishment of the Lasso

"World-Honored One! If one wishes to attain vast spiritual powers, to travel through the palaces of the Thirty-Three Heavens up to the Akaniṣṭha Heaven, and to all the palaces where the reward bodies of all Buddhas dwell, as well as the palaces of the sun, moon, dragons, yakṣas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, and mahoragas—and even to accomplish all worldly and transcendent dharmas—one must first complete the preparatory service, purify the body and mind, uphold precepts with vigor, arouse great compassion, and universally revere the Three Jewels. Then, one should properly cultivate the Amoghapāśa Eight-Noose Samaya.

For the image and noose samaya, cast a statue of Amoghapāśa Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva from gold or silver, measuring eight finger-widths in height (equivalent to two handfuls). It should have three faces and two arms. The central face is compassionate, the left face is fiercely wrathful with glaring eyes and an open mouth, and the right face is slightly wrathful with furrowed brows and a closed mouth. The head is adorned with a jeweled crown, upon which rests a transformation Buddha. The left hand holds a noose, and the right hand is raised with the palm open. It is adorned with seven-jeweled necklaces, bracelets, and heavenly garments, seated upon a lotus throne. Also, fashion a trident from silver or iron, measuring sixteen finger-widths in length (equivalent to one cubit). For the noose, use equal parts of lotus stem fibers, eucommia bark fibers, śuka wood fibers, tree bark fibers, and silk threads, properly prepared and treated.

On the eighth day of the waxing moon, construct a maṇḍala. At the center of the altar, use pure white sandalwood paste, aloeswood paste, and turmeric paste to draw a one-cubit-wide, thirty-two-petaled blooming lotus. Upon the lotus platform, coil and place the five fibers. Offer pure white food, incense, flowers, and scented water according to the method. Each day, abstain from idle talk and frivolity. Recite the Mūla Dhāraṇī Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empowering the five fibers one hundred and eight times. Until the fifteenth day, observe a fast, continuously reciting the mantras without interruption. Then, twist the strands of fiber together into a single, unbroken rope. Fold and intertwine eight strands to form a noose sixteen cubits in length. Attach one end of the noose to the bodhisattva image and the other end to the trident and an amalaka fruit.

During the month conducive to spiritual powers, on the eighth day of the waxing moon, bathe thoroughly, don clean clothes, and partake of pure white food. Construct a maṇḍala, and in its center, arrange a beautifully adorned Dharma seat, square or round and one cubit in height. Upon this seat, place the image, noose, and trident. Coil the noose loosely, placing the image within it. Recite the Mūla Dhāraṇī Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra twenty-one times, empowering the image, noose, and trident, and then set them in place. Empower scented paste and apply it to the image, noose, and trident. Also, sprinkle various powdered incenses over them, and empower white mustard seeds to scatter upon them. Offer incense, flowers, scented water, food, fruits, and vegetables according to one's ability. Place vessels of scented water at the four corners and bowls of scented water before the four gates.

Each day, at the six designated times, sit facing east upon the seat in accordance with the method. With a tranquil mind, burn supreme incense, form mudrās, and recite the Mūla Dhāraṇī Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empowering the image, noose, and trident. While practicing this method, one must abstain from speech and not consume any food from outside sources, as such food is impure and defiling. During the first watch of the night and the last watch of the night, empower white mustard seeds and first strike the trident and noose. Practice diligently without interruption for thirty-six ten-day periods. During the first watch, middle watch, and the dawn hour of the fifth watch, the image and noose will simultaneously emit light. If they emit fiery light, one will accomplish worldly siddhis. If they emit various colored lights, one will attain transcendent samādhi siddhis. At that time, a voice will sound in the sky, proclaiming: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man, you have now accomplished the transcendent and worldly Bodhicitta Noose Samaya. Through the power of this noose, you will attract and gather the supreme king of Bodhicitta, abide in the perfection of the ten pāramitās, and become like a wish-fulfilling jewel.' At that moment, make confession, arouse unsurpassed vows, and offer argha. Then, holding the trident and noose in the right hand, recite the Mūla Dhāraṇī Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra with forceful voice ten thousand times. You will then realize the Amoghapāśa Mantra Spiritual Power Samaya, gain the respectful companionship and protection of koṭis of hundreds of thousands of mantra vidyādharas, travel freely throughout the ten directions, increase your merit and lifespan by ten koṭis of years, and accomplish whatever dharma you contemplate.

If there are sentient beings who have committed the five heinous crimes and ten evil deeds, yet encounter this sutra, immediately generate faith and wisdom, deeply delight in this method, single-mindedly study and practice it with diligence and without laziness, they too will certainly attain accomplishment. How much more so for those with pure faith who uphold pure precepts and practice diligently—will they not greatly accomplish this method? However, if the practitioner harbors doubts about the method, no accomplishment will manifest.

If one wishes to subdue all devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and vināyakas, recite the Mūla Dhāraṇī Mantra seven times and the Fierce King Mantra seven times, summoning all devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and vināyakas. Then, whirl the noose with the right hand, and they will all arrive, ready to be commanded. If one wishes for people in the world to respect and remember them, recite the mantra, whirl the noose, and perform the method, and the wish will be fulfilled.

Furthermore, by reciting the Fierce King Mantra seven times and whirling the noose with the right hand, one should visualize capturing and binding all malicious devas, nāgas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas, and they will be bound. If not released, they will be perpetually confined regardless of time; if released, arouse great compassion, recite the Secret Heart Mantra three times, and they will be set free. To subdue evil and wicked people, recite the mantra and whirl the noose, and they will become compliant.

If one desires the Secret Samaya, hold the noose, recite the mantra, form the noose mudrā, and empower the body with the mudrā; then one may go wherever one wishes. To cause dragons and devas to send down rain or to stop rain, construct an altar according to the method, make offerings to the image and noose, gaze at the sky, recite the mantra, whirl the noose, and perform the method; rain will fall when needed and cease when needed.

To avert all disasters, epidemics, and illnesses, upon a high tower or mountain peak, recite the mantra seven times and whirl and cast the noose; all disasters, epidemics, malignant winds, hail, and rain will be dispelled and scattered.

One who accomplishes this Bodhicitta Samaya should maintain unwavering mindfulness, uphold pure precepts, constantly visualize all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—especially Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva—present before them, making reverent offerings. By reciting and practicing according to the method without ever forgetting, one will certainly attain accomplishment."

"World-Honored One! For the 'Wheel and Lasso Samaya,' one should cast a wheel from gold, silver, or red copper. It should be eight finger-widths in diameter(Measured by two handfuls), with six spokes, a hub, and a rim, all clearly and properly adorned according to the method. For the lasso, take equal parts of lotus stem fiber, eucommia bark fiber, and silk thread, prepared according to the method. On the eighth day of the waxing moon, properly construct a mandala. In the center of the mandala, using white sandalwood paste, turmeric paste, and aloeswood paste, draw a one-cubit-wide, fully bloomed lotus with 108 petals, marking its boundaries. Place the three types of thread coiled upon the lotus seat. Offer the three white foods and various fragrant flowers according to the method. Each day, recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empowering the three threads 108 times. By the fifteenth day, observe a fast while continuously reciting. Combine the threads into a single strand, do not keep them separate. Braid the three strands into a single lasso 36 cubits long. The wheel is prepared similarly. Tie one end of the lasso to the wheel's hub.

On the eighth day of the waxing moon in a month of spiritual potency, bathe cleanly, wear pure clothes, eat the three white foods, and properly construct a mandala. On the eastern side of the mandala, place an image of Amoghapasha Avalokiteshvara. In the center of the mandala, arrange a decorated, variegated high seat, one cubit in height and width. Coil the wheel and lasso upon this seat. Empower incense paste and anoint the wheel and lasso with it. Empower powdered incense and scatter it upon them. Empower white mustard seeds and also scatter them upon them. Offer various fragrant flowers, perfumed water, and the three white foods according to the method. Place vessels of perfumed water at the four corners. Place bowls of perfumed water on the four sides of the seat. Each day, facing east, burn the King of Incense, making offerings to all. Sit in the full lotus posture, wearing the proper attire. Continuously, without interruption, recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, first holding the wheel and lasso. Whether at the beginning of the night or the end of the night, empower white mustard seeds and first strike the wheel and lasso with them. For thirty-six periods, diligently practice the method without interruption of days. At the beginning of the night, the end of the night, and at dawn, the wheel and lasso will simultaneously emit light, rise into the air, spin, and hover above the head of the mantra-holder, blazing with great fiery flames. The image of Avalokiteshvara will praise him, saying: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man, you have now accomplished the Amogha Wish-Fulfilling Heart Wheel and Lasso Samaya.' At that time, make offerings of arghya and state your wishes. Form the wheel mudra, holding the wheel in the left hand. Form the lasso mudra, holding the lasso in the right hand. Recite the Wrathful King Mantra 108 times. Recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empowering the wheel and lasso 108 times. Circle them three times to the right above your own head. Then, form the empowerment mudra, empower your crown, circle it three times to the right, and perform self-empowerment. You will then realize the Amogha Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Great Spiritual Power Samaya. All great mantra-holding vidyadharas will appear before you, respectfully protecting you, and say: 'Great Sage! What shall we do now? We can all act as your support and companions.'

If you wish to enter an asura cave, stand at the entrance of the asura cave. Fast for one day while continuously reciting the mantra and empowering the wheel and lasso. At the cave entrance, empower once and gesture with the lasso once. After 108 such gestures, the doors will open by themselves, allowing unimpeded entry. The method for entering the caves of yakshas, rakshasas, kinnaras, and nagas is the same as this. When entering the cave, always hold the wheel in the left hand at the chest, and hold the lasso in the right hand at the level of the right shoulder. Upon entering the cave door, the ground will shake in six ways, and the wheel will emit flames, illuminating the cave. You will see various jeweled trees, flowers, fruits, and palaces surrounding you. On the path to the palace, you will suddenly see manifested a pure, stainless medicinal spirit of flavor, with a form like a deva, adorned with garments of many jewels, holding a branch of fruit. This stainless medicinal spirit possesses great poisonous power; one who sees it from a yojana away can have their vital energy sucked away. When you see it, be wrathful and fearless. Holding the wheel in your left hand and the lasso in your right, stand firmly before it. With a great wrathful voice, loudly pronounce the syllable 'HUM' two, three, or seven times to subdue the medicinal spirit. Then, with a great wrathful voice, recite the Wrathful King Mantra two, three, or seven times from a distance to subdue the medicinal spirit. At that time, the stainless medicinal spirit will fall face down on the ground, its entire body streaming with sweat like a gushing spring. The mantra-holder, seeing this, should not touch its bodily sweat. The medicinal spirit will rise again, looking back in great anger. The mantra-holder should swiftly strike the stainless medicinal spirit with the lasso three, four, or seven times. It will then become terrified and subdued, and its body will emit nectar. The mantra-holder should take this nectar and apply it to both eyes and both soles of the feet, and smear it all over the body. He will then be able to ascend into the sky, abide upon the first wind circle, and attain the divine eye. He will fully perceive all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions, all devas and vidyadharas, and also see all past Buddhas abiding in their relics. The mantra-holder's body will turn golden, his hair like spiraling conch shells. His lifespan will increase by a thousand kalpas. Eighteen thousand kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of deva-vidyadharas will constantly be his companions. Seventy-two Ganges-sands of kotis of hundreds of thousands of kinnara mantra-vidyadharas and kinnari mantra-vidyadharas will serve, revere, and protect him. Whatever heavenly nectar and delicious foods he desires, the benevolent-eyed asura king will immediately provide. All vinayakas with malicious minds will cease their malice and become subdued and compliant. Furthermore, take the hair of the medicinal spirit and combine it to make a cord. Empower it two, three, or seven times, and it will transform into a jeweled rope. The mantra-holder should always wear it tied around his waist. Wherever he goes, he will forever be without obstacles. These mantra-vidyadharas will constantly accompany and protect him until enlightenment.

When entering or leaving asura palaces and caves, always hold the wheel and lasso, never temporarily setting them aside. If you see the medicinal spirit again, do not speak with it. The benevolent-eyed asura king and all his retinue, holding jeweled canopies, heavenly garments of wondrous beauty, all kinds of exquisite jeweled lotuses, all jeweled flowers, jeweled pearls, great mani pearls, all weapons, all jeweled vessels filled with heavenly nectarous foods and drinks, all jeweled incenses, will welcome you with one mind, reverently make offerings, or further present them to the mantra-holder. At that time, redouble your efforts immeasurably. Arouse a mind of great compassion and non-retrogression. Single-mindedly recollect and hold Amoghapasha Avalokiteshvara. Do not let the mind become distracted. Do not gaze upon forms or become attached to appearances. Let the mind constantly abide in the signless samadhi.

Go directly up to the jeweled lion throne in the palace hall. First place the wheel and lasso, then sit upon the throne. Kneel upright, join your palms, and with utmost sincerity, bow your head in reverence to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions and to Avalokiteshvara, requesting the increase of merit and virtue, surpassing all ghosts and spirits in the cave. The mantra-holder should further arouse the mind of great bodhi. Contemplate the suchness samadhi. Bow with head and face to the ground in reverence to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions and to Avalokiteshvara. The wheel will then by itself rise into the air, spin, and rotate above the heads of all those ghosts and spirits. All those ghosts and spirits will be terrified and become subdued.

When the mantra-holder sits upon the throne, the palace in the cave will shake in six ways. In the sky, heavenly music of various kinds will harmoniously sound. All the devas together will hold jeweled crowns and place them upon his head. In empty space, they will rain down heavenly garments of wondrous jewels, gold, silver, jeweled pearls, and jeweled ornaments as offerings. All the devas together will hold jeweled vessels filled with nectar and respectfully present them as offerings. He should then partake of it. His body will transform into a golden color. His hair will change to the color of antimony. He will attain pure divine eyes, pleasing features, and an increase in merit like that of Ishvara. Like Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, his lifespan will be a thousand kalpas, and he will dwell in the asura cave.

If he leaves the cave, carrying this nectar for personal use, mixing it with water for bathing will eradicate sinful defilements. If applied to wood, it will turn into true gold. If applied to all earthenware, stone, iron, copper, silver, etc., they will all turn into gold.

If one wishes to see the naga king Nila, or the kinnara king Hasala Nila, properly construct a mandala, adorn the wheel and lasso with various jewels, place them upon a seat, and make offerings according to the method. Recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empower white mustard seeds, empower once and strike the wheel and lasso once, for one thousand and eight times. The lasso will coil by itself, and the wheel will rise and spin by itself. Then take the wheel and lasso and go to the naga pool. Further empower the wheel and lasso and whirl and cast them onto the pool one, two, or seven times to summon and gather the naga king Nila. At that time, Nila will appear. If one desires the jeweled ornaments of the naga palace, cast the lasso as before, and they will appear as wished.

If one desires that kshatriyas, brahmins, and all people respect and remember him, whirl the lasso towards them. Regardless of distance, they will all respect and remember him. If one desires to subdue all lions, white elephants, tigers, wolves, and fierce beasts, also empower and whirl and cast the wheel and lasso. They will all become terrified and subdued.

If one desires that Surya and Chandra look upon and protect him, face Surya and Chandra, empower the wheel and lasso, whirl and cast it. Those devas of the sun and moon will protect him. If one wishes to go to the palaces of the sun and moon, form the lasso mudra, hold the wheel and lasso, recite the Mother Dharani Mantra one thousand and eight times, and he will ascend into the sky and reach the palaces of the sun and moon. If he wishes to return, perform the previous method, and he will return to his original place.

If one wishes to enter the naga palace, construct a mandala at the naga pool. Recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra. Whirl and cast the wheel and lasso towards the pool 108 times. The naga king and his retinue will appear simultaneously and say to the mantra-holder: 'You may enter the palace.' When about to enter, the pool will shake and transform into a jeweled pool. Its water will be clear, pure, and endowed with color, fragrance, and taste, like nectar. Further recite the Secret Heart Mantra, empower white mustard seeds, and scatter them into the pool. A naga maiden will appear, showing half her body, holding a jeweled vase, gazing respectfully, and say to the mantra-holder: 'I wish you to enter the palace.' Upon seeing the naga maiden, first request three wishes for the sake of attaining and realizing the Dharma of bodhi. Say to the maiden: 'Now I request three wishes. Please grant them to me. Be my mother, be my elder sister, be my great benefactor who serves and provides for this beggar.' Thus request all three wishes together. At that time, the naga maiden will reply to the mantra-holder: 'Do as you please.' Holding the wheel and lasso, recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra. Walk slowly and calmly into the naga palace. In the palace hall, ascend the lion throne. When sitting, bow in reverence to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions and to Avalokiteshvara. The naga palace is purely adorned with jeweled bells, golden chimes, hanging pearls, and necklaces of various kinds. The naga maiden will then hold a great jewel and say to the mantra-holder: 'If it is for bodhi, now receive from me this great mani jewel.' He should immediately take it. First coil the wheel and lasso and place them on the jeweled seat. Place the mani jewel in the center of the lasso. Join palms in offering. Recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra, empowering the mani jewel 108 times. While empowering, the mani jewel will emit great light and flow with white milk. Scoop it up and drink it. He will then realize the Samadhi of Pure Stainless Light, the Samadhi of the Amogha Vast Jewel Light, and the Samadhi of Amogha Self-Mastery and Illusory Transformation. He will abide on the Tenth Ground and accomplish the pure body of Anuttara Samyak Sambodhi. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva will touch his crown and declare: 'You are now, for my sake, the Amoghapasha Heart King Mother Dharani Mantra Samaya, the Vast Liberation Lotus Mandala Samaya, the Pure Dharma Body. You are my son.' All Tathagatas in the ten directions will simultaneously praise him: 'Excellent, excellent! Truly a Buddha's son. You now abide on the path of all Bodhisattva Mahasattvas and shall attain Buddhahood.'

If one desires the vast mantra-vidhyadhara samaya, the naga maiden will at that time offer a golden flower. Receive the golden flower and place it back upon the head of the naga maiden. Then loudly pronounce the syllable 'HUM' three, four, or seven times. Tears will flow from the eyes of the naga maiden. Take the tears and drink them. He will then realize the Vast Mantra-Vidhyadhara Samaya. His hair will turn dark blue, spiraling to the right. He will attain spiritual powers and self-mastery. He will gain eighteen kotis of mantra-vidhyadharas as his retinue, respectfully surrounding him. His lifespan will extend for sixty-two thousand years. He will gain the wisdom of knowing his past lives for seven thousand births.

If one desires worldly accomplishment methods, the naga maiden will say: 'Take my hair.' The naga maiden will pluck her own hair and offer it to the mantra-holder. He should immediately receive it, twist it into a hair rope, recite the Secret Heart Mantra, empower once and tie one knot, for twenty-one knots. Tie it upon his own crown. He will then guide and transform all yakshas, rakshasas, humans, non-humans, etc., causing them to arouse various minds to serve, provide for, revere, and protect him. He will also gain invisibility and go wherever he wishes without obstruction. If tied on the forehead, he will guide and transform all devas, nagas, and spirits, and they will also revere and submit. If tied on the right arm, his strength will be like that of a great elephant, his virtue such that he fears nothing from humans or non-humans. If tied on the left arm, when he touches kshatriyas, brahmins, or all people, they will also revere him. If tied on the right hand and he knocks on the four city gates, he will gain the praise of all the people of the country and town, disasters will be removed, and the king will be delighted. If he raises his hand and points at any animal—tigers, wolves, bears, leopards, venomous snakes, vipers, scorpions—they will all become terrified and subdued and will not harm each other. If tied on the right foot when crossing rivers or seas, the water will not submerge his ankles. If tied on the left foot, he can swiftly travel one hundred yojanas in a day. If tied on the left thigh, when entering a charnel ground, all evil ghosts and spirits will appear and submit.

If he wishes to constantly dwell in the naga palace, the naga maiden will at that time offer a jeweled vase. The mantra-holder should receive the jeweled vase with his right hand and take the naga maiden's right hand with his left hand. When he holds it, a lotus jeweled pond will manifest in the palace. Say to the naga maiden: 'Now bathe in this pond for me.' The mantra-holder should take the water in which the naga maiden bathed her body, bathe with it, drink it, and then hold the wheel and lasso. He will fully realize the Vast Mantra-Vidhyadhara Samaya, be fully endowed with the Dharma jewels, gain seven thousand kotis of mantra-vidhyadharas who revere and support him, extend his lifespan for ten thousand years, and dwell while roaming in seventy-two palaces.

If he requests the naga maiden to be his birth mother, that naga mother will always regard this person as her beloved son and bestow upon him all the treasury's precious toys, female attendants, and servants. If he requests the naga maiden to be his elder sister, she will also bestow upon him all the palace's jeweled implements, garments, nectarous foods and drinks. If he requests the naga maiden to be his great benefactor who serves and attends him, she will obey his commands. Together they can go to all deva palaces, naga palaces, yaksha palaces, rakshasa palaces, gandharva palaces, asura palaces, and kinnara palaces, roaming constantly without obstruction. Whatever his mind desires will be accomplished.

The mantra-holder should redouble his diligence and not be negligent. If thoughts of desire arise, the bodhi mind will regress.

If one wishes to enter underground, in a quiet place properly construct a mandala. Offer various flowers, incense, and foods of a hundred flavors, and burn the King of Incense. Day and night, hold the wheel and lasso. Recite the Mother Dharani Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra ten thousand times. Recite the Wrathful King Mantra one thousand and eight times. By the night of the fifteenth day, from the incense burner will spontaneously arise the fragrant smoke of heavenly incense. Further recite the Wrathful King Mantra 108 times. From the mandala will emerge the upper body of an earth spirit, with hair standing on end, face upward, features greatly wrathful, eyes red like fire, canine teeth protruding upward, ten fingers and shoulders red, lips like cinnabar, complexion dark and livid, body straight with a protruding belly,

"World-Honored One! The Lotus Lasso Samaya: with silver as its leaves, a blue lapis lazuli platform, genuine pearl stamens, and golden filaments for its stem. The flower is the size of a fresh lotus. Take fibers from lotus stems and pure, well-prepared silk threads in equal parts. Establish the altar and perform the rites according to the method. Empower the threads and braid them into a lasso. Use a single, unbroken strand. Fold it into three strands, each twenty-one cubits long, and braid them together to form a lasso, dyed blue. Tie one end of the lasso to the image of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and the other end to a lotus stem. On the eighth day of the bright fortnight in a month of spiritual power, bathe in purity, wear clean clothes, eat the three white foods, and create a mandala. In its center, draw a two-cubit, thirty-two-petaled blooming lotus. Use red sandalwood paste for the leaves, white sandalwood paste for the platform, turmeric paste for the filaments, borneol paste for the stamens, and aloeswood paste for the seeds. Mark the gates and pathways. On the lotus platform, arrange a precious, colorful seat. Place the coiled lasso upon it, with the lotus mandala in the center. To the east, place an image of Amoghapasha Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. Offer various fragrant flowers, scented water, the three white foods and drinks, and scented water as arghya according to the method. Each day, face east, burn the supreme incense, assume the dance mudra, sit, form the rosary mudra, and contemplate according to the method, reciting the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra. First, hold the lotus lasso. At the beginning and end of the night, recite the mantra over white mustard seeds and first strike the lotus lasso with them. For thirty-six weeks, diligently practice the method without interruption. Then the lotus lasso and the image of Avalokiteshvara will simultaneously emit light, and a voice will praise from the sky: 'Excellent, excellent! O diligent one.' Hearing this, remain joyful, calm, and unmoving. Gaze upon the Bodhisattva's face, kneel, form the mudra, and recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra twenty-one times, gathering and stabilizing the light. Then, holding the lotus in your left hand and the lasso in your right, receive it upon your head. Recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva will manifest, touch your head, and praise: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man! Now you have truly become my child. Such offering is true offering, true service to me, and true accomplishment of the Amoghapasha King Samaya. Good man! You are now freed from the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death; from the sufferings of the sixteen great hells; and from the eight great terrors. This body of yours is now your last bodily existence. After abandoning this life, you will go directly to dwell in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, receiving superior lotus birth. Until attaining Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, you will never regress. By cultivating this method, you will serve eighty-four thousand nayutas of kotis of Ganges' sands of all Tathagatas, planting the seeds of the accumulations of generosity, wisdom, and liberation, and all kinds of wholesome roots. It is as if you have planted immeasurable, boundless offerings to the Three Jewels, built monasteries, stupas, and various images, given away kingdoms, treasures, gardens, groves, houses, elephants, horses, carriages, wives, children, and servants—all kinds of wholesome roots—and all Tathagatas will confer predictions upon you. Good man! All the accumulated karmic obstructions from beginningless time are now entirely eradicated. Good man! What dharma or wish does your heart desire? Ask as you will, and I shall fulfill it for you now.' At that time, the mantra practitioner should request the lotus lasso. Always keep it in a pure place and make offerings to it. If you later wish Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva to appear frequently, place the head of the lotus lasso in the left hand of the Avalokiteshvara image. With your right hand, hold one end of the lasso. Recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra once and call Avalokiteshvara's name once, repeating this one thousand and eight times. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva will then manifest. If you wish to see all the great Bodhisattvas, the method is likewise: follow this procedure, calling each by name. If you wish to see the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens, for each specific god, follow this example: perform the method, recite the mantra, and call the name one hundred and eight times. They will immediately appear and fulfill whatever you request. If you wish for our Shakyamuni Buddha to confer a prediction, on the eighth day of the bright fortnight, bathe in purity, wear clean clothes, completely refrain from speech, eat the three white foods, create a mandala, place Shakyamuni Buddha in the center, and make extensive offerings of various fragrant flowers. Place the head of the lotus lasso in the right hand of the Shakyamuni Buddha image. Properly tie the other end to your own earring. Recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra once and call Shakyamuni Buddha's name once, completing ten thousand repetitions. Then Shakyamuni Buddha will manifest, touch your head, confer a prediction, cut off all karmic obstructions from beginningless time, and name this your final bodily existence. After abandoning this life, until attaining Bodhi, you will never again undergo any worldly birth from womb, egg, moisture, or transformation. If you remain in the world, you will gain great wealth and honor, be respected by all, and be free from premature death and illness. At the time of death, the Buddhas of the ten directions will simultaneously appear, speaking words of comfort and indicating your place of rebirth. Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva will touch your head and comfort you: 'After leaving this life, go directly to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, be born by lotus transformation, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor characteristics of a great being, obtain the wisdom of remembering past abodes, know the events of hundreds of past lives, deeply understand the Amoghapasha Great Liberation Lotus Mandala Seal Samaya, never regress, abide in the stage of Supreme Joy, attain great spiritual powers, travel throughout all Buddha-lands in the ten directions, respectfully make offerings to all Buddhas, dwell in palaces, towers, pavilions, and observatories of precious jewels, until attaining the Unsurpassed, Perfect Enlightenment.' If you wish to see the Land of Ultimate Bliss, Amitabha Buddha, and all the Bodhisattvas, in a secluded and excellent place on the fifteenth day of the bright fortnight, purify yourself according to the method and create a three-cubit altar, or a four-cubit one, or up to an eight-cubit one, with four open gates. Whatever you wish to do for offering is permissible. Measure the ground, remove bad soil, tiles, stones, bones, and wood. Fill and level it with pure soil and scented water. Mix cow dung with yellow earth and plaster it properly according to the method. Empower a cord to mark the boundaries of the altar. In the inner court, depict an ocean. In its center, a seven-jeweled, blooming lotus with one hundred and eight petals. Blooming lotuses at the four corners. In the outer court's ocean, depict blooming lotuses in blue, yellow, red, and white, along with their stems and leaves. On the lotus platforms, place the various seals. Between the lotuses, depict various fish, animals, wild ducks, geese, mandarin ducks, white cranes, peacocks, kalavinkas, sharis, and jivajivaka birds, and such. At the four gates, depict the Four Heavenly Kings, seated in half-lotus posture. Properly adorn and color them, marking the boundary paths. On the lotus platforms, ornament high seats. On these seats, place Amitabha Buddha, with Avalokiteshvara to the left and Mahasthamaprapta to the right. Place one end of the lotus lasso in the right hand of the Amitabha Buddha image. Properly tie the other end to your own earring. Decorate the surroundings with various banners and flowers. Spread offerings of various fragrant flowers, scented water, the three white foods and drinks, butter lamps, and oil lamps according to the method. Burn the supreme incense. At the western gate, assume the dance mudra, sit according to the method, recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra, and call Amitabha Buddha's name day and night without interruption. On the fourteenth and fifteenth days of each bright fortnight, consume only cow's milk, recite the mantra, and perform the method according to the rite. On the night of the fifteenth, during the fifth watch, Amitabha Buddha will emit great light, the altar will tremble, and the mantra practitioner's body will also emit light. At that time, the practitioner should repent and make vows, then recite the mantra another twenty-one times. Amitabha Buddha will appear, touch your head, and comfort you: 'The wishes you seek shall now be fulfilled.' At that time, you will realize a pure, stainless body of light. Then you will see the palaces and towers of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, Amitabha Buddha, and all the Bodhisattvas, with their splendid marks and light, and their various spiritual powers, all simultaneously praising: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man! The body you have received is your final body. After leaving this life, you will be born and dwell in my land, possessing the wisdom to know the past seven thousand lives.' At that time, the mantra practitioner, holding the lotus lasso in the left hand, should recite the root dharani mantra and the secret heart mantra ten thousand times, and the wrathful king mantra one thousand and eight times. You will then attain great spiritual powers, your lifespan will extend for ten thousand years, and you will receive the reverence and protection of all mantra-holding lasso vidyadharas and great wheel-turning kings. Eighteen thousand mantra-holding lasso vidyadharas will respectfully follow you, until attaining Bodhi."

"World-Honored One! For the Vajra Pestle and Noose Samaya, take sandalwood measuring twelve finger-widths(the width of three handfuls), and carve upon it a five-pronged vajra pestle. On the central prong, at both ends, depict the faces of Pūtana demons. On the other eight prongs, adorn the blade surfaces with golden colors and radiant flames. Along the entire body of the pestle, on the central prong at both ends, entwine Nanda Dragon King and Upananda Dragon King, coiling left and right in alternating directions, each coiling around the head of a Pūtana demon. The heads of these two dragons should each extend three or four finger-widths beyond the Pūtana demon heads.

For the noose, take an equal measure of tree bark fibers, white cotton thread, and clean, refined silk. Construct a maṇḍala, perform the ritual to empower the threads, then braid them into a single-strand noose—do not separate them into individual strands. Fold and braid three strands together to form the noose. Tie one end of the noose around the waist of the pestle. After purifying oneself with bathing and adorning with clean garments as described above, place the pestle and noose maṇḍala upon a high seat in the ritual arena. To the east, set up Amoghapāśa Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and offer various offerings.

The mantra practitioner should spread white kusha grass and take a seat in the western gate. With the left hand holding a staff, press it upon the pestle and noose. During the day, recite the Mātṛkā Dhāraṇī Mantra and the Secret Heart Mantra. First, hold the pestle and noose. At the beginning of the night and the end of the night, recite the Fierce King Mantra while empowering white mustard seeds, then strike the pestle and noose. Diligently practice without interruption until thirty-six ten-day periods are completed. If light emanates from the pestle or noose, then grasp them and recite the Mātṛkā Dhāraṇī Mantra one hundred eight times, followed by the Fierce King Mantra one hundred eight times.

At that time, the Tathāgata family, the Vajra family, the Maṇi family, and the Padma family will all manifest simultaneously, bestowing supernatural powers, the ability to soar through the skies at will, and a form as mighty and indestructible as a vajra. All deities of the Vajra family will protect from afar, and one's lifespan will extend to twelve thousand years.

If one wishes to subdue and guide all devas, nāgas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, asuras, kinnaras, garuḍas, and mahoragas, one should call out the name of each celestial being by their individual titles, recite the Fierce King Mantra, and brandish the noose and pestle toward them. They will then submit respectfully, offer reverence, and serve as protectors. If one wishes to subdue and guide all evil persons, proceed in the same manner.

Furthermore, on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the dark lunar fortnight, at midnight, recite the Fierce King Mantra with a great wrathful voice, brandish the noose and pestle, and with the intention to bind all jealous, malicious yakṣas, rākṣasas, and life-force-sucking ghosts, they will all be bound. To release them, recite the Secret Heart Mantra.

If someone is afflicted by illness caused by ghosts or spirits, stand before that person, grasp the pestle, and point it toward them—their illness will be cured.

If in a charnel ground, recite the Fierce King Mantra with a great wrathful voice, brandish the noose and pestle with the right hand, then one will attain Antar-dhāna (the power of invisibility) and see the palace gates of all ghosts and spirits open.

If at the entrance of an asura cave, empower the pestle and point it—each gate will open by itself. All ghosts, spirits, and venomous dragons within the cave will cause no harm. The cave path will become level and straight, allowing one to enter without fear. One will see marvelous playthings within the cave, obtain whatever is desired, come and go without obstruction, and constantly enjoy peace and happiness.

Know that this is the power of the Great Vajra Pestle and Noose, capable of accomplishing all worldly endeavors."
