Chapter on Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva's Prophecy
Then the World-Honored One, having surveyed the Pure Abode Heaven Palace once more, addressed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Noble one! Out of compassion for the multitude of beings, you abide in the form of a dhāraṇī, and for the sake of beings you expound, establish, encourage, rejoice in, and explain the principles. For practitioners, you reveal the essential teachings and the various homa rites, with skillful means enabling them to attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, as well as the fruits of the two vehicles and the realms of gods and humans. With a purified body, you perform the Buddha's work for beings, manifesting the Buddha's form and establishing the tranquil, non-abiding nirvana. If there are beings who should be delivered by the form of Maheśvara, you manifest the form of Maheśvara and expound for them the secret dhāraṇī methods. Likewise, if beings should be delivered by the forms of Śakra, Garuḍa, Kiṃnara, Mahoraga, siddhi-illumined sages, sun, moon, stars, youths and maidens, or even various forms—whether two-legged, four-legged, many-legged, legless, sentient or non-sentient, within the three realms—you manifest accordingly and expound for them. For this reason, you are called Avalokiteśvara, the One Who Observes Freely."
Then the World-Honored One again praised Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Noble one, you are able to benefit sentient beings with such skillful means, manifesting various forms to teach and expound the Dharma. This is truly rare—you are a pure Bodhisattva indeed. In the future, after countless eons as numerous as the dust particles of worlds, in the realm called 'Equal Light Universally Illuminating,' you shall attain Buddhahood, bearing the title: Tathāgata Equal Light Universally Illuminating, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened, Accomplished in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Guide, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. You will enable beings there to dwell in fearlessness, free from distress and change, ultimately reaching serene extinction, and then finally enter complete Parinirvāṇa."
Then, after the World-Honored One had bestowed the prophecy upon the Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the gods of the Pure Abodes and the immeasurable assembly of great bodhisattvas, empowered by the Buddha's spiritual might, received the light of universal illumination. This light shone everywhere, illuminating the ten directions and countless worlds, making them all brilliantly bright. Beings who encountered this light swiftly gained wholesome benefits, were freed from all sufferings and afflictions, and all gave rise to the mind of supreme enlightenment. The entire great assembly contemplated the Buddha's form and each remained peacefully seated in their own place. A rain of celestial flowers and a cool, fragrant breeze spread universally throughout the great assembly.
At that moment, the great assembly saw in the empty sky countless Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattvas, the Great Beings, pervading every direction throughout all lands. Then the entire assembly spoke in unison, saying: "Homage to the Buddha! This is the power of the World-Honored One's majestic spiritual might." All those gathered witnessed this miraculous transformation, their minds filled with joy and freed from all doubt.
At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the Great Being, rose from his seat. He circled the Buddha three times, bowed with his head touching the ground, and gazed upon the Tathāgata without blinking. With a gentle smile, he stood before the Buddha, holding a white flower in his hand, sincere and composed.
Then, from all the buddhas of other worlds, there rained down clouds of various colored flowers. Within those flower-clouds were celestial garments, flower garlands, golden cords, jeweled necklaces, banners, nets of precious gems, and all manner of splendid adornments. They filled the sky, covering and honoring the Buddha above.
A wondrous voice also arose, praising: "Excellent, excellent! Today, the Tathāgata bestows upon Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the Great Being, the great anointing as a Dharma-Wheel King."
"Immeasurable adornments, and wondrous sounds of music, Surpassing all praise from humans and gods, all such things manifest. All the Tathagatas from the ten directions, and the entire assembly of Bodhisattvas, From the six desire realms, the form realm, and the pure abodes without defilement— Those Buddha-sons receiving the Abhisheka, all gather like clouds. Countless demonic hosts, and beings of many kinds, All hold exquisite offerings, presenting them to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, With the shared vow that in the future, they may all be like Avalokiteshvara."
At that time, the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara bowed to the venerable feet, praised the Tathāgata, and then returned to his original seat. He spoke thus: "This dhāraṇī was jointly proclaimed and joyfully affirmed by the past Buddhas, such as Vipaśyin, and by our World-Honored One, Śākyamuni. In the future, Maitreya, the World-Honored One, and all Buddhas beyond measure will also proclaim it." Having spoken thus, he entered the Samādhi of Universal Light and Tārā.
Through the power of this samādhi, from the pupil of his right eye on his radiant face, a great light shone forth. Following the flow of light, a wondrous female form appeared, abiding in the Samādhi of Sublime and Excellent Appearance. She was adorned with priceless, variegated jewels, like molten pure gold reflecting lapis lazuli. She embodies the essential secret words that accomplish both worldly and transcendental aims, capable of pacifying the various sufferings of beings and bringing joy to all sentient beings. Pervading the Dharma-realm nature of all Buddhas, she abides in equality like empty space.
She proclaimed to all beings, saying: "Who is in the midst of changing suffering? Who is drowning in the ocean of birth and death? I vow to liberate them." Having spoken thus, she traveled throughout immeasurable, boundless worlds, then returned to the Buddha's presence. Circling him three times to the right, she bowed her head to the feet of the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. With palms joined respectfully, holding a blue lotus, she gazed upon the Bodhisattva, received his instruction, and stood ready.
Contemplating the Tathāgata's sovereign spiritual power, she shone a cool, refreshing light upon all beings, just as the cool moon in the world dispels feverish distress, illuminating all darkness without exception. Going even beyond this, with a gentle, playful smile, she compassionately regarded beings like a loving mother. With her light of compassion and kindness, she illuminated all Buddha-lands, causing the light of all celestial beings to fade from sight.
Then, the noble and pure Guanyin, after paying respects to the World-Honored One, spoke these verses, saying:
"For countless eons, I have expounded upon Tara, her principles, mantras, times, and directions. So too have all past Buddhas extensively proclaimed her.
Like the boundless, immeasurable sky, I will now speak a small part, according to the matter at hand.
If one practices wondrously, all supreme vows will be fulfilled. In the ten directions and in lifespan, none will fail to achieve their wishes.
If there are beings seeking the fruits of human or heavenly realms, who uphold this sublime Dharma and practice as taught, for countless eons, they will enjoy supreme bliss.
If one seeks the ten grounds, fulfilling the Bodhisattva stages— Difficult to Conquer, Immovable, Skillful Wisdom, and Dharma Cloud— by upholding the noble Tara, whether for countless, three hundred million, or, according to sharp or dull faculties, sixteen hundred thousand times, such wondrous practice will surely achieve the above.
If one wishes to see Guanyin, the noble and pure one, recite seven hundred thousand times, and without doubt, you will see her.
If one seeks to see Mahasattva Mahasthamaprapta, the stainless one, recite fully a hundred million times, and the holy one will surely appear.
If, in the three periods of the day, with a tranquil and undefiled mind, one constantly recites with single-mindedness, the six perfections will swiftly be fulfilled. The treasury of the Tathagata, Nirvana, and ultimate reality, the indestructible body of light, the peerless samadhi, sitting upon the vajra seat, turning the unsurpassed Dharma wheel, opening the eyes of humans and gods— all are perfected through practicing Tara.
If one wishes to comprehend dharanis, rituals, skillful means, definitive meaning, sutras, the profound principles, and to pacify the suffering of the three realms, recite a hundred thousand times.
If one seeks Brahma, or Lord Indra, or the Wheel-Turning Sage King, recite fully a hundred thousand times.
If one wishes to roam Snow Mountain, or the Jambudvipa continent, Mount Sumeru and the Iron Ring Mountains, Sahā and Wonderful Abode, Malaya and Wonderful Banner Mountain, Auspicious and Abode, Nepal and Kailash, Gridhrakuta and others, wondrous colors and variegated places, pure and glorious— such abodes of sages and saints— recite a hundred thousand times each.
To the palaces of yakshas, gandharvas, rakshasas, nagas, and even heavenly mansions, one may go at will; to resolve doubts and questions, to understand all matters according to circumstance, if one seeks such wishes as above, recite a hundred thousand times.
If one wishes to enter the asura palaces, the dwellings of kinnaras, to summon yaksha maidens, and vidyadhara仙女, naga maidens, kinnaras, and yakshas, they will come at your thought, to play, entertain freely, and to seek the medicine of immortality, the nectar of deathlessness, abundant wealth, servants, and all pleasures of the five senses, recite a hundred thousand times.
If I and the Tathagatas, for countless eons, were to expound her merits, still we could not exhaust them. Those who uphold this Tara should receive offerings from humans and gods. Tara, the Great Compassionate One, is the loving mother of all. Gods, humans, and yakshas— there is none who is not her child. Thus she is called the Mother of the World, and of the world-transcending.
Guanyin and Mahasthamaprapta, Vajrapani and Sudhana, Manjushri and Subhuti, Maitreya and Gandhahastin, Candraprabha and Akshayamati, Vimalakirti and others— all are children of Tara. She is also the mother of Prajna. All Tathagatas of the three times, all Mahasattvas— there is none who is not her child. All call her my mother, nurturing all sentient beings with compassion, supporting them like the great earth."
At that moment, after reciting this verse, Guanyin then spoke the Dharani to Tara Bodhisattva:
Homage to the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. Homage to the Noble Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, the Great Compassionate One. Thus it is: Om, Tare, Tuttare, Ture, Svaha.
Then, after Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva spoke the dhāraṇī, through the majestic power of Tārā Bodhisattva, all beings in every world were freed from suffering and distress, attaining peace and joy. They all gave rise to the supreme mind of enlightenment, became perfectly attuned with the true nature of reality, and entered the treasury of the inexhaustible gate of birthlessness. The entire assembly felt wonder in their hearts, praising what had never been seen before.
