At that time, after the Dharma Prince Mañjuśrī had spoken this dhāraṇī to the great assembly, all the Tathāgatas of the ten directions, the gods, dragons, and eightfold assembly, and all the great multitude unanimously praised him, saying:
"Excellent, excellent! Mañjuśrī, the Youthful Bodhisattva Mahāsattva! With your great compassionate vows and power, for the sake of pitying beings of little merit in this evil age, you have skillfully expounded this inconceivable, wish-fulfilling, wondrous jewel treasury of the Dharma, bringing inexhaustible benefit and welfare to sentient beings."
Then Mañjuśrī addressed the great assembly, saying:
"I received this dhāraṇī from a Buddha in the past. Whenever I encounter a place where, during a kalpa of decline, beings' merit is exhausted, I proclaim it. I do so to guide all good men, good women, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās in this evil age who seek the path to enlightenment, to swiftly accomplish all wholesome deeds for the sake of leading all beings across the great ocean of the suffering of birth and death. I urge them to receive and uphold these divine and wondrous verses.
"If good men or good women diligently recite this dhāraṇī day and night, constantly remembering it without forgetting, or even just praise its inconceivable power and encourage others to believe, accept, and recite it wholeheartedly, practicing beneficial deeds, then all the evil karma from beginningless time—including the five heinous crimes and others—will be completely eradicated for these good men and women. They will never again sink into the great ocean of birth and death and will be forever free from the fear of the three lower realms.
"Wherever they are reborn, they will obtain the wisdom of remembering past lives. Their six sense faculties will be pure, their features complete, their appearance wondrous and dignified, their majestic virtue blazing. All their wishes will be fulfilled. Any other mantras they previously upheld will all be accomplished. In all their endeavors, nothing will fail to be supremely successful.
"If one can receive and uphold this dhāraṇī, any previous violations of śīla (precepts) or deficiencies in the three karmas (of body, speech, and mind) will be purified. All offenses of breaking precepts will be eliminated. They will forever leave the evil paths and constantly be reborn among humans and gods. Their faculties will be tamed, their wisdom pure. In all matters, they will attain fluency and success. Within the true Dharma, they will gain the power of deep faith. All their words and teachings will be heard and believed.
"Among adversaries, they will always gain supremacy. All enemies will forever cease their malicious intent and be unable to harm them. All gods and dragons will constantly follow and protect them. Effortlessly, they will accomplish vast merit and fortune. Those who see them will submit and revere them.
"Due to my profound and inexhaustible compassionate vows, which bring benefit and enrichment to all beings, and due to the protection and mindfulness of the Tathāgatas of the ten directions and the great bodhisattvas, the empowerment of all sages, and the power of their vows, all liberation will be achieved without exception.
"I will now further explain the ritual procedures for receiving and upholding this dhāraṇī, including creating an image, establishing an altar, and making offerings.
"For practitioners seeking accomplishment, they should first choose an auspicious day according to favorable constellations. The painter should receive and uphold the eight precepts and be pure. On white silk or plain silk, paint an image of the single-tufted Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva in the form of a youth, golden in color, seated in half-lotus posture upon a thousand-petaled white lotus flower. In his left hand, he holds a blue lotus flower, upon which rests a wish-fulfilling jewel. His right hand's palm faces outward, hanging down, with the five fingers forming the 'fulfillment of wishes' mudrā. He wears a gentle smile, adorned with various pearl garlands, a crown, and jeweled ornaments.
"After painting this image, in a pure room, prepare a square altar by cleaning and wiping it. Arrange the positions for seventeen deities in three concentric courts, from the inside out, exactly as described in the Yoga Method of the Five-Syllable Wheel. Offer exquisite incense, fine cakes, and fruits with sincere devotion. Place this image on the eastern side of the altar. The practitioner should face east toward the image from the western side.
"Begin the recitation starting from the eighth day of the waxing moon. Each day, recite the aforementioned mantra eight hundred or one thousand times. Then, lie down before the image, single-mindedly thinking of me, Mañjuśrī, and go to sleep. In the dream, one will certainly see Mañjuśrī appearing in the form of a small youth. Upon seeing this sign, know that one has received empowerment. All wishes of the heart will be accomplished, all sought-after things obtained. All words and teachings one speaks will be believed and accepted by others.
"Another method: Take the medicine called 'Militi' (This refers to white pepper). Recite the aforementioned mantra to empower it eight thousand times. Then, hold this medicine in the mouth. If one goes to a royal palace or to the residences of officials, one's words will resonate and be heeded. All wishes will be fulfilled. All teachings one speaks will be believed, submitted to, and none will dare to disobey.
"Another method: Take the medicine called 'Tizhiwadi' (This refers to dried bark of the Bodhi tree). Empower it with the aforementioned mantra eight thousand times. Place it in a bowl and go on alms round. Whatever is needed—food, drink, clothing, even gold, silver, or the seven treasures—will be obtained. People will cherish and respect one, vying to make offerings. In all places of conflict, one will be victorious.
"Again, on the eighth day of the waxing moon, before this image of Mañjuśrī, light lamps, partake of the three white foods (milk, curd, ghee), and also offer white foods, various white flowers, and burn white sandalwood incense as offerings. Recite this mantra eight thousand times. After completing the recitations, immediately lie down to sleep before the image. I, Mañjuśrī, will manifest my pure and wondrous form-body to them. All their wishes will be fulfilled. Each day, I will provide one thousand gold coins. These should not be hoarded, but entirely used to make offerings to the Three Jewels and cultivate merit.
"Recite eight hundred times daily. Make offerings according to one's ability and means, without interruption.
"Another method: Empower a silver bowl one hundred and eight times, or eight hundred times, or twenty-one times. Place it on a white cloth before the image of Mañjuśrī, and also cover it with a white cloth. After one night, in the morning, reach into the bowl and obtain eight hundred gold coins.
"The aforementioned methods should be performed in secret. Do not let even one other person know or hear of it, except for one companion who shares the same practice and seeks the same goal. One must definitely not speak of it to outsiders, or the empowering force will be instantly lost. One must be careful and secretive.
"If one can follow the teachings with careful diligence, gold coins will be provided daily for constant offerings, without interruption.
"The methods described above should not all be performed together. Choose only one practice according to one's preference to accomplish.
"Furthermore, one must first purify body and mind, frequently drink the five pure products of the cow (milk, curd, ghee, urine, dung), arouse a mind of compassion, and diligently practice day and night according to the teachings without deficiency. One will certainly attain the supreme siddhi (accomplishment) in this very life.
"The Heart Mantra is:"
Om, Samaya, Srisi, Hum, Svaha.
The Heart's Intention Mantra:
Om, Ah, Sha, Ma, Ha, Hum, Svaha.
Boundary-Setting Mantra for the Altar:
Om, Nishe Shamo Ning, Hum Svaha.
Boundary-Setting Mantra:
Om, Samananta-kṣema-nī, Hūṃ, Svāhā.
By reciting this mantra twenty-one times over water and sprinkling it in all four directions, a protective boundary is established. If you regularly recite this mantra before the Bodhisattva Manjushri, eight hundred times daily without fail, you will daily receive five hundred gold coins. These must be offered and used to support the Three Jewels. Use only what you need for your own sustenance, and do not seek to use them for meaningless or improper purposes, nor should you hoard them. Every day, you should offer various cakes and fruits to Manjushri Bodhisattva, ensuring the offerings are timely and pure. Your own clothing should be kept extremely clean, and you should bathe frequently to avoid dirt and impurity.
If you encounter improper monks or Brahmins, or those who appear haggard, lack proper demeanor, or have unattractive forms, you must not mock or slander them. For the great sage Manjushri manifests in various forms and different appearances to test and guide the minds of practitioners, wishing them to constantly cultivate compassion, universal equality, and a mind of reverence for all beings—without discrimination, without attachment, without excessive affection, and with vast, unobstructed understanding. You should regard all beings as future Buddhas.
If practitioners can abide by these teachings, practice without discrimination, and diligently recite the mantra, the great sage Manjushri will swiftly fulfill their wishes. Their alms bowl will transform and remain perpetually full, never exhausting its contents.
Another method: Take a piece of sandalwood root, empower it by reciting the aforementioned mantra eight thousand times, and place it in your alms bowl. Carrying this bowl into the city to beg, you will obtain whatever clothing you need as you wish.
Another method: Take agarwood, white sandalwood, and storax resin. Always offer these three types of incense, burning them continuously in all places without interruption. Your wishes will be quickly fulfilled.
Another method: Take a five-colored thread one arm's length long. Recite the mantra one hundred and eight times to empower it, then tie it into a knot. Repeat until you have twenty-one knots. Place the knotted thread in your alms bowl before the image, and make offerings according to your ability. Manjushri will then manifest twenty-one taels of the finest gold daily in the bowl. This gold must not be stored or accumulated. Use it to perform meritorious deeds and make offerings to the Three Jewels, and it will never be exhausted. If you hoard or accumulate it, it will vanish and not reappear.
"Furthermore, there is a medicinal substance called Shushaboduona, also known as Sashabo(This refers to white mustard seeds), and another medicinal substance named Mahamiduo(This medicine originates from the Shu region). If there are strong winds, heavy rains, or prolonged downpours that do not clear, take these two medicines together and place them in one location. Using the body mantra, empower these two medicines eight thousand times, then toss them into the air—the wind and rain will cease. In times of drought and no rain, take Shushaboduona, empower it eight thousand times, and scatter it into water where dragons dwell—heavy rain will immediately fall.
Another method: take this empowered medicine and scatter it over a battlefield—all swords, staffs, bows, and arrows will become useless, and even if used, they will certainly cause no harm. If scattered in grass, forests, or among crops and seedlings, no insects or pests will be able to cause damage. If scattered in stone caves, bamboo groves, or among rice and other grain fields, the yield will multiply, and harvesting will be endless. If scattered over one's own head, one will achieve victory in all disputes. If entering a royal palace, the homes of high officials, or the residences of all government officials, one will receive respect and obedience.
If scattered among merchants and traders, their goods will not be stolen, and thieves will be unable to seize them. If scattered in all four directions, all ghosts, spirits, yakshas, rakshasas, and various demons will be unable to cause harm. If scattered in a place of fire, the flames will extinguish themselves and be unable to burn anything. If scattered in water, the flow will stop and become still.
There are many other methods, too numerous to fully describe. Once the previous methods are accomplished and proven effective, any subsequent actions performed according to one's own intentions will succeed without the need for exhaustive explanation—this is certain and beyond doubt. This mantra possesses great majestic virtue, radiant light, and inconceivable power, difficult to measure. For those who recite and achieve it, all obstacles vanish—except for those who lack sincere devotion."
