The wondrous body of a Bodhisattva's wisdom gives birth to all good and beneficial things, Just as from the earth spring forth all kinds of benefits.
From the treasury of all Buddhas' wisdom flows the great Dharma wheel; All phenomena arise from their own nature, and all nature gives birth. In a single instant, the meaning of all phenomena is born, And one attains great wisdom, comprehending all things. Entering deeply into all meditative states, abiding in the principle of equality, All phenomena become utterly pure, and one achieves perfect enlightenment.
All Buddhas appear, and the meaning of joy is fulfilled; The great light of wisdom's flame extinguishes all sinful defilements. Among all beings, one accomplishes the highest benefit. Suffering and affliction are like enemy thieves; wisdom is able to vanquish them. The supreme mark of diligence is subtle and greatly auspicious.
With arms a hundred cubits long, lifting a foot without treading, One foot presses the golden wheel down to the earth's furthest limit, The other foot covers the Brahma realm, yet only the toenails are seen. Supreme and most sovereign, the meaning of Dharma is without distinction, Manifesting all kinds of forms, arising from skillful wisdom, Pervading the realms of the ten directions, benefiting without end.
Having left behind the stains of cyclic existence, one attains three kinds of great bliss, Like a pure cloud, also like the autumn's bright moon, Like the sun free from clouds, blazing with great light, Like Indra's great sapphire, adorned with the most sublime color, And the great wish-fulfilling jewel, also serving as wondrous adornment. The displayed supernatural power shakes a hundred worlds.
Abiding in the foundations of mindfulness, right effort, Supernormal powers, faculties, and powers, The seven factors of enlightenment like wondrous flowers of the mind, Comprehending the Noble Eightfold Path, Heading toward perfect enlightenment, the ocean of a Tathagata's virtues.
The aggregates of all beings are like space; The mental activities of all beings are of various kinds and distinctions. Knowing the sense faculties and objects, the five aggregates are all empty; The meaning of the five aggregates is pure, and mental formations are beyond count. Knowing the characteristics of all formations, abiding in ultimate reality, The twelve links of dependent origination—their nature is entirely pure.
The four immeasurables, the true vehicle, The eight knowledges born from enlightenment, Knowing the internal faculties and external objects, the twelve meanings of truth, The secret sixteen divisions, the twenty kinds of enlightenment paths— Such supreme meanings are all known by the Buddhas.
Buddhas manifest countless bodies, ever abiding in meditative concentration, And in an instant can know the mental activities of all beings. The skillful means of the three vehicles, the subtlety of pure conduct, Awakening to the selfless nature of phenomena, abiding in the single vehicle.
Exhausting all bonds of affliction, emerging from the bitter sea of wandering, Leaving the dense forest of bondage, all kinds of suffering and such. Skillful wisdom and great compassion can universally benefit, Embracing all sentient beings, enabling them to realize the patience of non-arising.
The minds of all beings—knowing their objects as pure; The minds of all beings—equal and without distinction; The minds of all beings—joyful, giving rise to delight, Causing them to leave distraction, accomplishing all virtues, Penetrating the phenomena of the three times, all meanings of wisdom.
The nature of the five aggregates is originally empty; the three times are all thus. In a single thought giving rise to faith and understanding, one immediately sees the Buddha-nature. All phenomena arise from their own nature; the Buddha-body is originally unattached. Taking delight in seeing the Buddha-body, with all kinds of adorned forms, Taking delight in hearing of Buddha's enlightenment, the supreme true meaning.
The great mantra is beyond letters; the great mantra has three natures. Silence is beyond letters, giving birth to all mantras. The silence of the hundred-syllable gate, the five-syllable gate of great emptiness, The secret sixteen kinds, born from silence. Gala and non-Gala, of the past there are four kinds. Meditative meanings give rise to countless numbers; all is done and not-done.
Penetrating all meditations, knowing the fundamental concentration, The body of meditative concentration is supreme; the reward and transformation bodies are also thus, Universally pervading the realms of the ten directions, teaching and liberating all beings.
Finally, the God among gods, the most auspicious and supreme one, Becomes the teacher of gods and humans, subduing all demonic hosts. Like the heavenly king Indra, able to perform great giving, Liberating all beings, leading them out from the dense forest of afflictions, Praised by all ten directions, unique and without a second.
With the great Dharma of compassion as the armor of diligence, Wisdom as the bow and sword, destroying the thieves of affliction. With supreme majestic power, all demons are terrified. Having subdued the demonic enemies, one makes vast offerings. Bowing to the supreme teacher, the protector of the world, the Buddhas, Prostrating, extending praise, drawing near and serving, The realms of the ten directions and space are also thus offered.
Manjushri, the Greatly Auspicious One, the great Bodhisattva, Possesses the six superknowledges and three insights; the six recollections are all perfected. Manifesting great supernatural power, wisdom reaching the other shore, Far removed from cyclic existence, eternally attaining non-retrogression. With courageous and great diligence, knowing all phenomena, The great spiritual being attains transcendence of the supreme ground.
With the Dharma rain of wisdom, universally moistening all beings, Expounding the four Dharma seals, guiding through the three vehicles, The pure and supreme meaning, able to create great auspiciousness. Praised by Bodhisattvas, accomplishing the Vajra Lord, Countless beings gaze up and pay homage.
Homage to the Great Emptiness Treasury; praise to the Great Emptiness Treasury. Homage to the Buddha's Enlightenment Path; praise to the Buddha's Enlightenment Path. Homage to the Bodies of all Buddhas; praise to the Bodies of all Buddhas. Homage to the Buddha's Joy; praise to the Buddha's Joy. Homage to the Buddha's Virtues; praise to the Buddha's Virtues. Homage to the Thoughts of all Buddhas; praise to the Thoughts of all Buddhas. Homage to the Buddha's Smile; praise to the Buddha's Smile. Homage to the Speech of all Buddhas; praise to the Speech of all Buddhas. Homage to the Buddha's Beloved; praise to the Buddha's Beloved. Homage to the Birth of all Buddhas; praise to the Birth of all Buddhas. Homage to the Birth of Buddha's Wisdom; praise to the Birth of Buddha's Wisdom. Homage to the Buddha's Playful Dance; praise to the Buddha's Playful Dance. Homage to Omniscience; praise to Omniscience. To the nature of emptiness and the net of illusion, homage and praise are also thus.
At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! The Tathagata's wisdom observes the very profound and subtle body of All-Knowledge. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mañjuśrī, for the benefit of all sentient beings, expounds this pure and supreme teaching of names and meanings. For sentient beings whose three karmas (of body, speech, and mind) are not yet purified, it enables them to embrace and hold their three karmas within the treasury of merit and wisdom of the Buddha's ground and the gates of perfections, achieving complete purification. For those who have not yet understood the supreme meaning, it enables them to understand. It even opens up and enables comprehension of all the treasuries of the Buddha's Dharma, giving birth to all good qualities and serving as a gate of merit."
Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi said: "This supreme teaching of names and meanings gives birth to all pure-ground perfection methods, completes secret mantras, accomplishes the ocean of all virtues of All-Knowledge and Wisdom, purifies the three secret gates of body, speech, and mind, contemplates all Buddhas, the Rightly and Perfectly Enlightened Ones, and accomplishes the great samadhi of Buddha-wisdom. It is the pure Dharma realm of all Tathagatas, the supreme ten powers that destroy demonic adversaries, possessing All-Knowledge and All-Modes-of-Knowledge, the fundamental skillful means to benefit sentient beings, with the treasury of merit and wisdom purified and perfected. It gives birth to the noble seeds of Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas—the two vehicles. It enables all humans and devas to abide in the Mahayana practices of the Bodhisattvas, to enter the right holy path and attain liberation. It further increases the wholesome roots of Bodhisattvas, embraces and accepts all non-Buddhist doctrines and heterodox views. With majestic power, it subdues the four kinds of demonic adversaries, causing all sentient beings to return together to the holy path. It liberates from bondage, departs from all distractions, perfects all wholesome endeavors, severs the cycle of rebirth, and attains the true holy path. With wonderful incense, flowers, banners, and canopies, it universally makes offerings to all Tathagatas, swiftly accomplishing all mantra sections. It generates loving and joyful thoughts towards all Bodhisattvas, corresponds with the Perfection of Wisdom, and fully understands the non-duality of the Bodhisattva's practice of emptiness. It perfects all treasuries of perfections, completes all pure Buddha-grounds. It attains the Four Noble Truths with holy wisdom manifesting, single-mindedly abiding in the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, and even perfects all Buddha-virtues."
Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi said: "This scripture of supreme names and meanings can eliminate all unwholesome sinful defilements of the body, speech, and mind karma of sentient beings, enabling them to be far removed from all evil destinies, to sever all karmic obstructions, and to eliminate all fears of the eight difficulties. It departs from bad dreams and nightmares, obtaining great auspiciousness, and departs from all bonds with demonic adversaries. It cultivates all wholesome roots, merit, and benefits, severs all inflated pride, and forever departs from all suffering and cyclic existence. It enables the true knowing of the mind of all Buddhas, the true knowing of the secret practices of Bodhisattvas, the true knowing of the holy wisdom of the three vehicles, and the true knowing of all mantra seals. The supreme Dharma meaning gives rise to great wisdom, abiding in blissful conduct with mastery over form and strength, obtaining pure and great auspicious matters. With joyful delight, one praises and extols this scripture of names and meanings with wonderful verses, and it can also eliminate all illnesses and great terrors. If sentient beings have desires in their hearts, and with utmost sincerity recite and uphold this supreme teaching of names and meanings, they will obtain all as they wish. If they wish for purity, they obtain purity; if they wish for protection, they obtain protection; if they wish for abundance, they obtain abundance. Like a drowning person being rescued, those who have not attained the path are enabled to attain its fruit, riding the boat of wisdom to the shore of enlightenment. Like a great king of physicians who can cure all illnesses, with skillful wisdom he rescues sentient beings, and all ignorance and darkness are forever left behind. Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, according to their wishes, it benefits all, enabling perfection. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mañjuśrī truly knows All-Knowledge and Wisdom, perfects the five eyes and six perfections, attains the four fearlessnesses, abides in the ten grounds, and perfects the great treasury of merit and wisdom and the gates of samadhi. He truly knows the non-duality of Dharma-nature, truly knows the distinctions of forms and appearances, truly knows the purity of the countless billions of forms and appearances, for the nature of the Tathagata is entirely empty. This teaching of names and meanings is the non-dual Dharma meaning. If one receives, upholds, explains, and reveals it, then one can benefit all sentient beings, enabling them to depart from the dense forest of wrong views and afflictions."
Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapāṇi addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mañjuśrī and the wisdom observation of all Tathagatas are non-dual. This scripture of names and meanings is supremely revered, like the great wish-fulfilling jewel on the crown of a Buddha's head. If good men and good women, relying on this supreme secret mantra gate, its verses, and their meanings and principles, receive, uphold, recite, explain, and copy it three times daily, they will benefit sentient beings, reveal the three vehicles, and universally enable understanding and entry."
At that time, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Mañjuśrī expounded this supreme teaching of names and meanings, wishing to cause sentient beings to single-mindedly believe and accept it, to attain a mind of supreme understanding, to fully comprehend all supreme Dharma gates, to cultivate the practice of non-abiding, to perfect wisdom, to purify the three karmas, and to generate the mind of enlightenment. All Buddhas and all great Bodhisattvas universally manifest the gate of equality, enabling all sentient beings to understand and enter. The great Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi manifests a wrathful form, with great majestic power subdues demonic adversaries, universally benefits all sentient beings enabling them to attain peace and bliss, reveals the secret samadhi practice sites and all mantra seals, guides sentient beings into the right concentration assembly, perfecting without remainder. The great bright mantra king eliminates all obstacles and difficulties, subdues demonic adversaries, possesses great majestic virtue, and constantly protects day and night. The youthfully pure Bodhisattvas, Brahma King, Śakra Devānām Indra, the god Rudra, the god Nārāyaṇa, the god Maheśvara, together with the goddess Cāmuṇḍā, the great black god, the goddess Nandikeśvarī, the king Yama, the great god of the water realm, the king Vaiśravaṇa, the mother Hārītī—constantly protect day and night. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, at all times, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas grant their majestic spiritual protection. All Buddhas and all Bodhisattvas benefit and embrace those sentient beings; their body, mind, and speech karma all become purified. All Arhats, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas guard, remember, and embrace those sentient beings, enabling them to attain fearlessness regarding all dharmas. Such is the supreme holy Dharma of names and meanings; among all scriptures, it is the foremost. If one can believe, understand, receive, and uphold this, such a person then attains the path to enlightenment. Whether in meditation or in bustling places, or entering royal cities, villages, rivers, gardens, forests—all dwelling places—day and night, one is constantly protected and made fearless. The eight classes of gods and dragons, humans and non-humans, even the Piśāca women and all their retinues, constantly protect these sentient beings, enabling them to depart from all troubles and attain great peace and security."
Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi and the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi said: "This scripture of supreme names and meanings is like the jewel on a Buddha's crown, most supreme and subtle, its merit and virtue extraordinary and inconceivable. Receiving, upholding, and reciting it three times daily, with right mindfulness, contemplation, and diligent effort without laxity, one can swiftly enter the Buddha's enlightenment."
They further addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! The Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, with perfect form and appearance, observes and contemplates, and with great vows delivers sentient beings. Sometimes in space, he manifests all Buddhas, all Bodhisattvas, various transformation bodies, appearing in accordance with what sentient beings delight in, expounding subtle and profound meanings of verses, guiding sentient beings far from evil destinies. They are not born in lowly stations, do not fall into border regions, are born without ugliness, do not fall into wrong views, are constantly born in Buddha-lands, hear the true Dharma, depart from the formless realms, are not born in times of famine, conflict, or kalpa-disasters, are not born in the five turbidities or places of banditry and difficulty, are not born in poverty or places of hardship, are not born where non-Dharma and false verses are spoken for the sake of fame. They are born in families of the virtuous, among honorable people, with perfect, dignified, and complete form and appearance, pleasing to behold, universally loved and delighted in. They obtain the superknowledge of past abodes, possess the marks of great respect and great majestic virtue. Giving, moral discipline, patience, vigor, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, power of vows, compassion, loving-kindness, sympathetic joy, equanimity—the four immeasurable minds—are perfectly fulfilled. And regarding all arts, crafts, skills, and praise of external texts, they fully understand them. Leaving home to seek the path, regarding All-Knowledge, their mind is undistracted; they fully comprehend the meaning and benefit of the dharmas of the three vehicles. The merit of this scripture gives birth to immeasurable wisdom and immeasurable wholesome dharmas. If good men and good women receive, uphold, recite, understand its meaning and principles, and explain it to others, know that such a person, within the Tathagatagarbha, obtains the Buddha's virtues, will soon realize the supreme enlightenment, possess All-Knowledge and All-Modes-of-Knowledge, abide in the world, sound the great Dharma drum, raise the great Dharma banner, become a great Dharma king, and expound the great Dharma mantra."
Then he spoke the mantra:
Om, all dharmas, unborn, unceasing, indestructible, indestructible.
All phenomena, in their essential nature, are pure and clear. This is what is meant by the wisdom body of all Tathagatas, which is born from the purity of Manjushri Bodhisattva. The mantra is:
OṂ SĀRVA TATHĀGATA HRĪḌAYA HARA HARA OṂ HŪṂ HRĪḤ
Manjushri Bodhisattva addressed the King of Eloquence, proclaiming extensively the nature of all phenomena, like the sky, the perfect and pure treasury of wisdom in the realm of dharma. The mantra says:
