Chapter 7: Ritual Procedures of the Yamantaka Vajra Seal

Next, according to the proper ritual sequence, the highest practice manual for the Seal of Vetalī (Vetali) of Yamāntaka (Yamāri) is explained. This ritual bestows accomplishments on the mantra-holder. It was personally taught by the Wrathful King, the transformation of Mañjuśrī. This Great Mantra has immense power. When it is recited, from seven syllables up to ten or more, gods and humans who hear it will all attain peace and joy.

The mantra-holder should first practice the Great Mantra six hundred thousand times (6 lakṣa) according to the proper method, until it is mastered. Afterwards, he should create a painted image (paṭa), and then recite the Great Mantra three hundred thousand times (3 lakṣa). Following this manual, one begins the practice, and whatever one wishes for will be accomplished without fail.

This Great and Fearless King Yamāntaka can eliminate all demons, grant all wishes, and remove all calamities.

At that time, the mantra-holder should bathe and purify himself, neatly arrange the three Dharma robes, and with sincere resolve, rely daily on the King, reverently make offerings, and perform self-protection. Then, he visualizes the subtle syllable in his heart. Next, he visualizes this syllable transforming into a lotus, and imagines himself sitting atop that lotus. He then visualizes the syllable HŪṂ, followed by the syllable OṂ (OM) above his head, and the syllable Ā (A) on his eyes. Having contemplated like this for self-protection, he then recites the Great Mantra, from seven syllables up to ten or more.

If he must enter a military formation, he binds the seal (mudrā) of his own division, visualizes the mind-mantra, the head-mantra, the crown-mantra, and the body-mantra as armor. He visualizes the two-hand mantra transforming into weapons.

According to the Samādhi of the Great Mantra, he binds the fundamental seal of King Yamāntaka Vetalī (Bhīmavetāla) and visualizes it in his own heart. With his right hand, he binds the jewel-staff seal (ratna-daṇḍa), assuming a terrifying appearance.

At that time, the mantra-holder, with pure faith, offers various fine incense, flowers, and precious fruits to the merit-painted image (**bīḍuḍakīḍaka**? likely a form of the deity or mandala, interpreted as the deity's form) within the maṇḍala (circle). This can grant all wishes and bring about the accomplishment of all he seeks.

Furthermore, the ritual for creating sacred images can fulfill all wishes. A mantra practitioner should first recite the mantras proficiently before crafting the image. Any statue made from gold, silver, brass, raw copper, refined copper, lapis lazuli, crystal, or any precious material will bring vast merit and blessings.

If a practitioner seeks a royal position, they should create a gold statue eight finger-widths tall—this will certainly succeed. For wealth and status, make a silver statue ten finger-widths tall. To cure illness, create a raw copper statue sixteen finger-widths tall. For general wishes to be granted, make a refined copper statue twenty finger-widths tall. To resolve conflicts and also gain wealth, create a brass statue twenty-two finger-widths tall. To have all desires fulfilled, make a lapis lazuli statue sixteen finger-widths tall. To enhance mental vigor, avert misfortune, and increase good fortune, craft a crystal statue twelve finger-widths tall. To master the sword technique or enter the Asura cave, make a statue from various precious materials eight finger-widths tall.

These sacred images must be crafted with care, skillfully adorned with all auspicious features. When properly enshrined and venerated according to the rites, no wish will go unfulfilled. The aforementioned statues of the Wisdom King, made from gold and other materials, should depict him holding his specific implements, riding on a corpse, with six fearsome faces, twelve arms, six legs, and three heads. He wears a garland of corpses, a tiger-skin garment, and a sacred thread across his chest, posed in the left dancing stance. Following these ritual instructions, all endeavors made with faith will be accomplished.

Furthermore, carving an image of the Radiant King from wood according to the ritual instructions can also fulfill all one's wishes.

To create this sacred image, any type of wood may be used. However, if it is made from white sandalwood or pinewood, and stands twelve finger-lengths tall, it is considered the most supreme, capable of granting all aspirations.

If made from white Arjaka root wood, and standing sixteen finger-lengths tall, all prayers will be answered.

For an image fourteen finger-lengths tall, it will certainly bring wealth, honor, and happiness.

If carved from Ashoka wood and stands five finger-lengths tall, it can inspire affection and respect in others.

When made from pinewood and standing six finger-lengths tall, it can summon and subdue gods and the king of the Asuras, inspiring love and reverence in them.

An image seven finger-lengths tall, made from the wood of the dragon-flower tree, can dispel illness and overcome enemies and negativity.

Should the image be crafted from a human skull and stand twelve finger-lengths tall, even a practitioner who has not fully mastered the rituals need only offer devoted worship to accomplish all endeavors.

These are the methods for creating the sacred image.

Next, the method of creating a sacred image: At that time, the mantra-holder should collect the deceased person’s clothes, wash them clean with water, and use them to make an image measuring one cubit. Use the deceased person’s hair as a brush. Do not paint with five colors; instead, use only rabbit blood and red earth to paint the image. In the center, paint the Wrathful King of the Flame Garland, in a terrifying and fearsome form, stepping on a corpse, standing in a left-leaning dance posture. He has six faces with three eyes each, hair standing on end, thick eyebrows and wide eyes, all colored reddish-yellow. He has six legs and twelve arms: from the right, the first hand makes the gesture of granting wishes, the second holds a trident, the third a sword, the fourth a battle-axe, the fifth a jeweled staff, and the sixth a hook. From the left, the first hand makes a threatening gesture, the second a spear, the third a dumara drum, the fourth a jeweled club, the fifth a skull, and the sixth a lasso. He wears a tiger skin as clothing, and sharp fangs protrude from his mouth.

On either side of the Wrathful King, paint his Heart Seal and Wisdom Seal. To the king’s right, paint the Heart Seal of the Jeweled Staff, in a fierce appearance with hair standing on end, colored reddish-yellow. His hand forms the jeweled staff seal as a weapon, standing in a left-leaning dance posture, also making a threatening gesture, with furrowed brows. To the king’s left, paint the Heart Seal of Vetalika, her entire body ablaze with intense flames and great power, looking upward at the king. She has three eyes on her face with furrowed brows and hair standing on end. Her belly is large, and she holds a trident while making a threatening gesture, following the Buddha’s command to subdue all demons—those hard to tame, she can tame.

Once painted like this, place the image in a quiet, secret location and make offerings daily with incense, flowers, and food. Following the ritual procedures of the Jeweled Staff Heart Seal and the Vetalika Heart Seal, practice will surely bring success. When using this Heart Seal image to create a mandala, the mantra-holder should unroll it and make offerings. Whatever is sincerely desired will be granted—nothing will remain unfulfilled.

Furthermore, here is the method for creating a scroll painting of the Wrathful King Yamantaka. The mantra-holder should use a cloth from a funeral, wash it thoroughly with water, and make it into a scroll painting of one cubit in width. Use fine pigments to depict the Wrathful King Yamantaka in a color like a dark storm cloud.

Once it is painted, hang the scroll in a deep, quiet place. Set up offerings to all Buddhas and holy beings according to the proper ritual, and make offerings to them. The mantra-holder should sit on auspicious grass, maintain a focused state, and gaze at the scroll. Holding a rosary of vajra seeds, he should recite the Great Mantra exclusively for three hundred thousand repetitions.

If his body and mind become weary, he may rest temporarily, then resume recitation until he completes three hundred thousand repetitions. After finishing, he should go to a mountain peak and continue reciting the Great Mantra, diligently cultivating ascetic practices. Through this, he will surely attain success.

As stated in the ritual for the intermediate and lower levels of accomplishment, a person who does not diligently cultivate ascetic practices will certainly not succeed. When the mantra-holder is practicing austerities, he should cultivate the fearless mindset of Venerable Tārā. After eating a modest meal from his alms bowl, he should practice the silent sage's solitude and restrain all his senses. Then, holding an unbroken staff of khadira wood, he should walk along dangerous paths, overcoming all hazards.

At that time, the mantra-holder should practice the fearless conduct of the Wrathful King, reciting the Great Mantra of Yamantaka for six full months. This will lead to the highest level of success. By continuously upholding the fearless conduct of the Wrathful King in this way, one can destroy all demons.

When performing the ritual recitation, if demonic manifestations appear in various fearful forms, do not be afraid. Even if a heavenly maiden appears in a beautiful form, do not speak with her. Let your mind not be distracted; develop the aspiration for enlightenment. Recite the Wrathful King's Great Mantra, and those demonic forces will naturally be destroyed and vanish.

This is called the highest achievement, where all wishes are fulfilled. The mantra-holder should single-mindedly uphold this practice.
