The Sutra of the Invincible Great King Mantra Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by the Tripitaka Master and Propagator of the Dharma, the Purple-Robed Monk Fazitian, at Nalanda Monastery in
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed Shariputra, Ananda, and others: "I am now proclaiming the invincible Great Bright King Dharani, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans. If there are Vetala, Bhuta, or others who, driven by past actions, create obstacles against this Great Bright King, or even Yaksha and Rakshasa who initiate violent deeds intending to break this Bright King—they shall not succeed in destroying it." Then he spoke the dhāraṇī:
Tadyathā, hasani, vihasani, huru, juru, svāhā.
If a wise person has unwavering faith in this Bright King, respects and upholds it, then whether they are in the royal court or among lions, on the road or off the path, if they constantly keep this Bright King in mind, even when facing demon kings or encountering enemies, this Bright King will always protect them, and they will have no fear. Then the mantra is spoken:
Tadyathā: Om ṃ de, du de, dhu-ma-te, svāhā!
"If a woman earnestly upholds this teaching, and also writes it down to carry upon her head, her wealth will always be abundant, never depleting, and all her family will find peace and happiness." Then the mantra is spoken:
Tadyathā: Jaya jaya, jaya ni, svāhā.
"If a pregnant woman carries her child for a long time, suffering great pain and difficulty in childbirth, by reciting this mantra she may give birth easily." Then he spoke the mantra:
Tadyathā: Kṣa kṣa, vikṣa, mahākṣa, svāhā.
"If there are people who find themselves amidst the chaos of battle, killing one another, the Invincible One will protect them all, allowing them to dwell in safety." Then the spell was proclaimed:
Om. Tadyathā: Ṭaṭaṭu, ṭiṭu, svāhā.
If someone, whether drunk or dreaming, or even when walking or standing, remains undistracted by the crowd and always at peace, and if another person, with sincere devotion, constantly recites and proclaims this unsurpassed protection, day and night, with single-minded attention, they will be guarded. The mantra is spoken as:
Tadyathā (he says), Oṃ hara hara, Svāhā.
I now proclaim how the demon Mara, relying on his power and strength, manifested in various forms to confront the Bodhisattva. Seeing this, the Bodhisattva halted his army and said to his companions: "For thousands of millions of eons, I have striven for enlightenment, sacrificing my own life, my children, my wealth, and possessions without any attachment. I made great vows, devoted myself to this difficult practice, endured hardships, and acted for the benefit of all beings, cultivating compassion and kindness, hoping to attain perfect fulfillment."
When the demon Mara saw this, he came to obstruct me. At that moment, the Bodhisattva, recalling the invincible and great king of Dharani, through its power caused Mara and his entire army to retreat and disperse in all directions." Then he spoke this mantra:
Thus:
Tadyatha, iṭī miṭī, ṭīla miṭī, miṭī miṭīle, svāhā.
Then the Radiant King manifested in female form, approached the bodhisattva, pressed his palms together above his head, and spoke this verse:
"Great wisdom is proclaimed, like a great light shining everywhere. Today I have defeated Mara's army. Just as you sought supreme perfect enlightenment in the past, you attained great fearlessness and subdued Mara's army."
"Now, through the power of this radiant wisdom, I shall vanquish Mara and his great army, along with all their followers." Then he spoke this mantra:
Tadyathā: Kapati, Kapatā, Moli, Nakura, Kuhala, Mali, Svāhā.
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:
The Thus-Come One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, Enables all beings in every world To attain the supreme fruit—no poison can harm them, No weapon can wound them, fire cannot burn them, And in their sleep, they never see bad dreams. If bound by a king or fallen into a bandit's hands, Or on a dangerous mountain cliff, or even in a river— All terrifying difficulties will be fully released. All sins and sufferings will be freed, bringing peace and safety. With the power of clarity and the power of wisdom, They possess great majesty. Whatever work they undertake, they swiftly bring to completion.
Then he spoke this mantra:
Tadyathā: Om Sule Sule Vara Vara Vavara Manava Sama Samara Hule Svāhā Male Svāhā
The Buddha said: "When I was once a white elephant with six tusks, seeking enlightenment, I shielded a hunter and made this vow: 'If this is true, may all beings be freed from every suffering.' In a past life, when I was a turtle in the sea, my body was cut apart, yet I felt no anger, and I made this vow: 'If this is true, may all diseases of every being be eradicated.'" Then he proclaimed this dharani:
Tadyathā: Hile mile ni, dhuru vāpaṇa svāhā.
The Buddha said: "In a past life, as I sought enlightenment, I offered all kinds of peace and happiness to living beings. Once, when I was born as a pheasant and was caught by a hunter, I gave him whatever he required. I cultivated a heart of loving-kindness and did not give rise to anger or resentment." He then spoke this incantation.
Tadyathā Oṃ muni muni mahāmunaye svāhā Supratiṣṭha vajre svāhā
The Buddha said: "When I was the Patient Immortal, I cultivated the meditation of the Perfection of Patience. My mind remained untroubled, and I regarded all living beings as if they were my own children. When my body bled, the blood turned into milk.
When I was seeking enlightenment and practicing the perfection of generosity, a Brahmin came before me and asked for my head. I gave it to him, and he tied me to a tree with my own hair. At that moment, I awakened a heart of compassion and felt no anger. I saw that Brahmin as my own child. Even when my wives and concubines were given away, I did not cling to the pleasures of the senses, nor did I seek the power of a king or the riches of heaven. Truly, it was to subdue Mara and his retinue, to tame all enemies, and to attain the highest state.
To break their power, I declared the great mantra of mighty power, which can give rise to the fruits of past bodhisattva practices. Now, to subdue Mara, I shall recite it again." Then he spoke the mantra:

"I will explain to you the great power and virtuous might of that Invincible One. When the armies of the gods and the Asuras clashed, the gods remembered this Invincible One, and they were naturally victorious. You, god of diligence, when opposing all the Asuras, have a lifespan of a thousand years, waiting for the right moment—they can never overcome you. If one has achieved the true power of the Invincible One, and goes to the Brahma Heaven, constantly performing all sorts of tasks, even the majesty of Brahma cannot surpass it, because it is worthy of offerings. This is what the Buddhas have proclaimed." Then he spoke this mantra:

(68)
The Buddha said, "In the latter part of the night, as the sun first rose, I completed the supreme practice for the benefit of the world and fully realized Buddhahood. I attained full enlightenment, subdued Māra's armies, and began to turn the Dharma wheel. Then, thousands upon thousands of gods from the Pure Abodes came before me, their minds deeply inspired, and with gentle voices they urged me to turn the Dharma wheel."
The Buddha said to Shariputra: “Listen carefully, Shariputra! This Invincible King of Clear Understanding brings benefits and peace to all beings. Shariputra! In a past era, the gods and the asuras fought a great battle. At that time, the gods were defeated and the asuras emerged victorious. Then the lord of gods, Indra, wrote this Invincible Mantra on a golden leaf and placed it at the head of a banner, and joined the battle once more. This time, the gods prevailed, and the asura army was quickly routed.” He then spoke this mantra:
He spoke these words:
"Tadyathā: Emptiness, giving, Compassion, letting go, Praise and peace."
The Buddha said to Shariputra: "I see no being among the gods or Māra, nor among any humans, ascetics, Brahmins, demons, or spirits—including ghosts, goblins, celestial musicians, ogres, demons of vomiting, serpent-like beings, heavenly musicians, obstruction spirits, vampires, goblins of the forest, and all kinds of ghosts that feed on life—who would dare to disobey this unsurpassable Great King of Illumination. If one cannot see or hear this Great King of Illumination’s mantra, it is because they are obstructed by past or present karma."
Then the World-Honored One finished teaching this all-achieving dharani. At that time, Ananda, Shariputra, devas, asuras, and all others single-mindedly received and upheld it, rejoicing and putting it into practice.

The Sutra of the Invincible Great King Mantra Spoken by the Buddha
