Thus have I heard:
At one time the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka in Rājagṛha. At that time, within Rājagṛha, there was a monk who had been robbed by thieves, bitten by a snake, and harassed by a ghost, and he suffered great affliction. Then the great ghost general Atavaka, seeing that monk suffering in this way, felt compassion in his heart and went straight to where the Buddha was staying. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the Buddha's feet and stood to one side. He said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, through you all the most evil ghosts and spirits have been subdued. Now, out of compassion for all sentient beings, in order to subdue all evil ghosts and spirits and all evil people and evil poisons, I present to the Buddha, the World-Honored One, a most fierce and powerful incantation, to be used to subdue ghosts and spirits. If anyone recites this incantation, that person's majestic virtue and power will be enough to subdue even Brahmā, let alone lesser evils."
Then the Buddha said to the great ghost general Atavaka: "I have no need of this most fierce and powerful incantation, lest it harm sentient beings."
Then Atavaka spoke again to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, in later ages of evil, evil ghosts will flourish and evil people will be many; poisonous creatures and beasts will harm sentient beings, and people will encounter various perils — dangers from kings, thieves, water, fire, weapons, fear, enemies and hatred, evil ghosts, and so on. Whether they are the Buddha's disciples who have left home or remain in households, whether they are mendicant practitioners dwelling in quiet places, or the fourfold assembly dwelling among graves and beneath trees, whether they travel through wilderness, mountains, and forests, or dwell in cities, villages, towns, and alleys — they should be protected and kept from encountering evil. World-Honored One, out of kindness and compassion, please accept it. Well-Gone One, please look upon and receive it."
When the World-Honored One heard these words, he accepted them in silence. When Atavaka saw that the Buddha was silent, joy filled his heart, and there before the Buddha he spoke the incantation:

"World-Honored One, this dharani passage serves as protection and rescue for all beings. It guards and upholds those who recite it, causing them all to attain peace and tranquility, freeing them from decline and distress and eliminating all poisons and harms, and delivering them from all suffering and affliction, from the perils of kings, the perils of thieves, and the perils of enemies and hatred. Whatever harm or injury is caused by devas, nagas, ghosts and spirits, rakshasas, yakshas, kumbhandas, revata, apasmara, khakkhara, and the like—all shall be removed and eradicated. Furthermore, all poisons in the world—whether from fragrant herbs, roots, flowers, or fruits of trees, or from clothing, food, and drink, or any worldly things—and any insects, birds, beasts, or creatures capable of poisoning or injuring people, are all caused to decay and dissolve so they cannot do harm. Furthermore, should spirits and ghosts stir up winds in the sky, the sun, moon, and stars, or the whirling storm wind-wheels to come and injure people, or should various ghosts and spirits come seeking food to suck out people's vital energy and eat their flesh and blood, causing plague and fever, whether for one day, two days, three days, four days, or up to seven days, or causing cold diseases, wind diseases, damp diseases, chills, and other illnesses—all diseases within the body or on the outside, whether lasting seven days or sixteen days—all are caused to vanish and be destroyed so they cannot cause harm. If these ghosts and spirits wish to harm people with their hands, mouths, feet, tongues, or minds, or if evil people wish to cause trouble and harm to others, one should first recite this mantra; its power can lock their jaws, causing those evil people and evil ghosts to be silenced, shattered, and bereft of mindful awareness, so they cannot do evil. World-Honored One, I shall now proclaim a divine mantra to protect them."

"This dharani protects those who receive, uphold, and recite it. If there are ghosts that devour people's vital essence, or that harm people's property and drain away their wealth—all such fears and enemies—a boundary of protection is set against them all. Now, to provide great protection without measure for a certain household of a certain person in a certain country, I shall once more speak a spell that guards against all evils." Then he spoke the spell:

At that time, the Great General again spoke to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, this spell has extremely great spiritual power, as described above. Do not let those who hold this spell encounter fear of kings, fear of thieves, fear of fire, fear of water, fear of wind, poison, weapons and soldiers, or fear of the sun, moon, stars, ghosts and spirits. If there are other wicked acquaintances whose minds give rise to anger and jealousy, whose minds give rise to evil intent to harm and annoy, one should first recite this spell to create a boundary for them. It should cause those evil ghosts and evil people, hostile and resentful people whose minds give rise to harmful evil—it should cause them to become foolish, confused, and silenced, so that they themselves meet with all kinds of evil and cannot cross beyond this boundary, and cannot invade those who recite this spell. World-Honored One, if a good man or good woman recites this spell, all devas, nagas, asuras, all evil ghosts and spirits, humans and non-humans, will all follow and protect them, not letting them encounter evil. World-Honored One, I am a great general among ghosts and spirits, and my power can subdue all evil ghosts. If anyone recites this spell, I will lead all ghosts and spirits to stay by their side day and night, protecting that person so they do not see evil, and not letting evil ghosts or evil people find an opportunity against them. If anyone invades, damages, or harms one who recites this spell, I will crush their head with a thousand-spoked wheel, and cause all ghosts and spirits to bring them ruin and harm. World-Honored One, this spell has extremely great spiritual power and extremely great majestic virtue. I only pray that it be spread abroad, granting peace and happiness to the masses. World-Honored One, as for one who recites this spell, that person's virtue and power are known only to the Buddha. World-Honored One, this great divine spell should be entrusted to virtuous, wise, and good people. If one cannot recite it, one should write it out on fine paper, place it in a colorful pouch, apply various incenses, and always carry it on one's person. If there is worry, fear, or danger, one should always remember this spell, and nothing will fail to be dispelled. World-Honored One, if there is trouble, danger, worry, or fear, and one wishes to dispel evil ghosts and evil dreams, one should first create a boundary so that all evils do not arise, and cause those evil people, evil ghosts, and evil thieves to bring disaster upon themselves, their bodies scorched and withered, their minds deranged. When one wishes to create a boundary, one should bathe cleanly, wear clean clothes, and smear the ground well and cleanly; set out seven vessels of liquid drink, two vessels holding a little blood drink, two vessels holding various liquid drinks; light eight lamps; burn frankincense; and mentally perform offerings. I will bring all ghosts and spirits to their side and grant what they wish. That person should recite this spell and tie a red thread, then carry it as they go, and immediately be able to eliminate all difficulties."
At that time the Buddha told Ananda: "This mantra has exceedingly great spiritual power. It can eliminate all hardships and all evil omens of the times, and it protects and greatly benefits sentient beings. Receive and uphold it well, and let it spread far and wide. If anyone recites this mantra in a city, town, or village, all there will receive its benefit. If a king or a great minister recites this mantra, there will be no fearful troubles from evil bandits, no calamities or misfortunes, no plagues, and no floods, droughts, winds, or frosts in that person's realm. If you encounter evil bandits, you should recite this mantra. If it is tied to the top of a tall banner, then when the bandits see this banner, they will immediately retreat, scatter, and submit. Ananda, this mantra has exceedingly great power and exceedingly great virtue. You should have the fourfold assembly recite and uphold it well."
At that time the assembly, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and faithfully put it into practice.
(In the Dan edition there is a note here: "Make a platform of cow dung; outside it, arrange ashes, two vertical knives, and twelve arrows. Invoke the rite of Poju; the rest as in the preceding section. Recite three times and tie twelve knots in the thread.")
