The Sutra of the Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha to the Great General Spirit Aṭavaka is an apocryphal Buddhist scripture of unknown authorship, believed to have been translated during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. This sutra belongs to the early esoteric Buddhist canon, centered on the Buddha's teachings to the great general spirit Aṭavaka. It records dhāraṇī mantras and ritual practices for protecting the nation, quelling disasters, exorcising evil, and removing obstacles. The content emphasizes that upholding this sutra brings the protection of devas and guardian deities, eliminates the calamities of warfare, and ensures the peace and security of the land. This scripture reflects the historical context of the initial transmission of Buddhist esoteric mantras into China and their fusion with indigenous beliefs. Although not widely circulated, it provides important textual evidence for the study of early esoteric Buddhist thought and the system of state-protection scriptures in Chinese Buddhism, holding a certain significance in the developmental history of Buddhist ritual practice.

Thus I have heard:

Thus I have heard. At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove near Rajagriha. At that time, within Rajagriha, a certain monk was suffering greatly—first robbed by thieves, then bitten by a snake, and then troubled by a spirit.

Seeing the monk in such pain, the great spirit general, Atavaka, took pity on him and went to the Buddha. Arriving there, he bowed his head to the Buddha’s feet, stood to one side, and said:

"World-Honored One, you have subdued all the most malicious spirits. Out of compassion for all beings, and in order to subdue those spirits, evil people, and poisons, I now offer you, O Buddha, this supremely powerful and fierce incantation. Anyone who recites it will acquire such virtue and power that they can subdue even Brahma, let alone other evils."

Then the Buddha said to the great spirit general, Atavaka: "I cannot accept this extremely fierce and harmful incantation, for it might harm sentient beings."

Atavaka then said to the Buddha again: "World-Honored One, in future times, evil spirits will flourish, evil people will be many, and poisonous insects and beasts will harm beings. People may encounter various calamities—such as kings, thieves, fire, or water; swords and weapons; fear and hatred; and the trouble of evil spirits. For the Buddha’s disciples—whether monastic or lay—whether they dwell in solitude, beg for alms, or live on the road, in graveyards, or under trees; for all fourfold assemblies—whether they travel through wilderness, mountains, forests, or through villages and cities—I wish to protect them so that no evil may befall them. World-Honored One, in your compassion, please accept this. O Well-Gone One, in your mercy, please take note."

Hearing this, the World-Honored One remained silent, accepting the offering. Seeing the Buddha’s silent acceptance, Atavaka was overjoyed and, before the Buddha, spoke this incantation:

"The enlightened one who has overcome all obstacles, the sage who has attained the highest truth, the wise one who has realized the ultimate reality — may this blessing bring peace."

"World-Honored One! This collection of dhāraṇī syllables provides salvation and protection for all beings, bringing them peace, tranquility, and freedom from decline, affliction, and all poisons. It frees them from suffering, including that caused by kings, thieves, and enemies. Whatever harm or damage is inflicted by gods, dragons, spirits, demons, yakshas, kumbhāṇḍas, piśācas, or grahas—all of this will be eliminated. Moreover, all poisons in the world, whether from grass, trees, roots, flowers, fruits, clothing, food, or other worldly objects, as well as poisons from insects, birds, beasts, and dragons that injure people, will be neutralized and rendered harmless.

Furthermore, whatever harm might come from empty space, the sun, moon, stars, whirlwinds, wind-realms, or spirits—whether they stir up winds to harm people, or come seeking food, drawing away human vitality, or causing disease—whether it be heat-related illness for one, two, three, four, or up to seven days, or cold-related illness, wind-related illness, dampness, or fever—whether these diseases arise inside or outside the body, lasting for seven or sixteen days—all of this will be eliminated and rendered harmless.

If any of these spirits seek to harm people with their hands, feet, tongues, or minds, or if any evil person wishes to cause trouble, let them first recite this mantra. Its power will restrain, silence, and scatter the thoughts of those evil people and spirits, preventing them from doing harm.

World-Honored One! I will now speak this sacred mantra to provide protection."

Then he spoke the mantra:

This mantra serves as protection for those who uphold, recite, and study it. If there is a ghost that consumes people’s vitality, or one that drains their assets and depletes their wealth—any such fears or hostile forces—it forms a boundary of protection. Now, for this person and their entire household, I will provide boundless, powerful shelter. I will now state the protection against all evils once more.” Then he spoke the mantra:

The great general again said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, this mantra has immense spiritual power, just as stated above. May it ensure that those who uphold this mantra are not threatened by kings, bandits, fire, water, wind-poison, weapons, or celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars, nor by ghosts or spirits. If there are evil-minded people who, out of jealousy or resentment, intend to harm or disturb them, they should first recite this mantra to create a protective boundary. This will cause those malicious ghosts, people, or enemies—whoever intends to invade or cause harm—to become foolish, confused, mute, and shattered. They will encounter their own misfortunes and not be able to cross this boundary, nor harm the mantra-reciter.

"World-Honored One! If any virtuous man or woman recites this mantra, all devas, dragons, asuras, evil ghosts and spirits, humans and non-humans will follow and protect them, ensuring they encounter no misfortune. World-Honored One, I am the great general of ghosts and spirits, capable of subduing all such beings. Whoever recites this mantra, I will lead my ghostly retinue to protect them day and night, never leaving their side, so that they may not be harmed by evil ghosts or find themselves at the mercy of evil people. If anyone dares to harm or trouble the mantra-reciter, I will crush their head with a thousand-spoked wheel and have all ghosts and spirits bring them ruin.

"World-Honored One! This mantra has immense spiritual power and great dignity. I pray that it be widely disseminated for the peace and happiness of all. World-Honored One, the virtue and power of those who recite this mantra can only be known by the Buddha. This great spiritual mantra should be entrusted to wise and capable people. If someone cannot recite it, they should write it on fine paper, place it in a colored pouch, add various fragrances, and always carry it with them. Whenever they face worry, fear, or danger, they should constantly recollect this mantra, and all such troubles will be eliminated.

"World-Honored One! To eliminate troubles, fears, evil ghosts, or bad dreams, one should first set up a protective boundary so that no evils arise, causing malicious people, ghosts, and bandits to suffer their own calamities—their bodies wither and their minds go insane. When creating this boundary, one should bathe cleanly, wear clean clothes, and prepare the ground neatly. Place seven vessels of drink, two vessels with a little blood, one vessel with various other beverages, light eight lamps, and burn frankincense as an offering, focusing the mind. Then I will lead my ghostly retinue to that person and grant their wishes. That person should recite this mantra and tie a red thread, then proceed—doing so will eliminate all difficulties."

At that time, the Buddha told Ananda: "This mantra has immense spiritual power. It can eliminate all evils, protect sentient beings, and bring great benefit. You should receive it well and spread it widely. In any town or village where this mantra is recited, all will benefit. If a king or minister recites this mantra, their land will be free from evil bandits, dangers, disasters, epidemics, floods, droughts, wind, and frost. If encountering bandits, one should recite this mantra. If it is tied to a high banner, when the bandits see that banner, they will retreat, disperse, and surrender. Ananda! This mantra has immense spiritual power and great majesty. It should be taught to the fourfold assembly so that they may recite and uphold it well."

At that time, the assembly heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, and faithfully put it into practice.

For those who practice this method, first paint a scroll depicting the Great Spirit General—one, three, or four scrolls on the finest silk. Begin painting on the first day of the eighth month. You may paint it yourself or have someone else paint it. First, fast for seven days, then wear the finest clean clothes and bathe thoroughly. Have the painter observe the eight precepts. Set up a pure room with hanging banners and flowers, and build a fire altar one foot high. Place plenty of charcoal fire on the altar. Take one thousand eight pieces of white wood, along with sesame, rice, honey, ghee, and fragrant flowers. Recite the spell once for each item as you burn it completely. Use the finest colors and place them on the altar, chanting the spell one hundred and eight times. Do not mix with glue. Instead, mix with juice from white wood and frankincense resin. Bathe every time you use the restroom.

Paint the sovereign Atavaka who is dark and blue-black, six feet tall, with four faces. The front face is a Buddha face. The left face has tiger-like crossed fangs, three eyes, eyes red as blood. The right face is a spirit face with an angry expression, also with crossed tiger fangs, three eyes, and fangs protruding from the jaw. The top face is fierce, also with three eyes, crossed tiger fangs sticking out, eyes red as blood. On the topmost head, wrap the hair with a red dragon, with flames rising on the crown. Earrings hang, and a snake coils around the neck. He has eight arms: the upper left hand holds a wheel; the second left hand holds a spear; the third left hand joins with the third right hand in front in an offering mudra; the lower left hand holds a rope. The upper right hand holds a vajra; the second right hand holds a club; the third right hand forms the mudra of a trident; the lower right hand holds a sword. Snakes coil around his wrist and arm joints. He wears a seven-jewel armor overlapping on his chest. Dragons coil on his shoulders, hanging down from the chest, with three dragon faces emerging—red-yellow, with two eyes, mouths closed. The faces on the upper parts are deep dark blue; the middle face is yellow-white; left face is white; right face is red-black; front face is blue-white. His hands are all blue. He wears elephant-skin leg wrappings and shoes, and his feet trample two yakshas, both black. The spirit should appear extremely fierce, intimidating, majestic—described earlier as a violent, raging form.

On his left side, paint four attendants: to the left, Dhritarashtra and Virudhaka; to the right, Virupaksha and Vaishravana. All wear angry expressions, seven-jewel flower crowns, and fine gold armor. They have dragon-head armlets, heavenly robes, and seven-jewel leg wrappings and shoes. Their feet trample yakshas as well. Dhritarashtra holds a sword, pressing down; Virudhaka holds a trident; Virupaksha holds a sword in a pressing gesture; Vaishravana holds a vajra mace. Each of the Four Heavenly Kings leads his retinue. The Eastern Heavenly King leads the Gandharva general, holding a bell. The Southern Heavenly King leads the Kumbhanda king, holding a bow and arrows. The Western Heavenly King leads the Naga king, holding a sword. The Northern Heavenly King leads the Yaksha king, holding a concealed dagger. Above the spirit’s head, red-black clouds billow.

At the feet of the Four Heavenly Kings, place two child attendants, dressed in blue: one holds paper and a writing brush, the other holds an inkstone tray. In front of the spirit, place a celestial being offering incense with a censer. Everything must be painted extremely neatly and purely; then all wishes will be granted.

If you wish to see the spirit, on the seventh day of the seventh month or the third day of the third month, collect all kinds of flowers, grasses, rice blossoms, butter, honey, and ghee and burn them. All celestial gods and the eight kinds of beings will appear joyfully, revealing themselves.

"If you wish to subdue the great Demon King and gods, sit with legs dangling. Quickly form fists and press them onto your thighs. Bite your lower lip with your upper lip, and open your eyes wide. This is the Great Subduing Seal.

1. To bind a ghost or spirit: Cross the two little fingers in reverse, place both thumbs on top of the little fingernails, and straighten both middle and ring fingers. Do the same with the index fingers.

2. To command a ghost or spirit: Sit to one side, place the left hand on the hip. With the right hand, press the thumb onto the fingernails of the little finger and ring finger, and straighten both the index and middle fingers.

3. To subdue a powerful, malevolent ghost: Form the Fire Wheel Seal. Bend both ring fingers into the palm, making their tips level. All other fingers should touch at the tips, with the palm slightly hollowed.

4. To dispel a haunting ghost: Form the seal. Cross the three fingers from the middle finger down behind the back of the hand. Touch the two index fingers together to make them level. Press the thumbs horizontally across the middle knuckle of the two index fingers. Breathe in and out three times, and the ghost will be bound.

(The above five methods and rituals use the Great Mantra.)"

**The Great Dharani of the Eight Classes**

Homage to the Buddha, homage to the Dharma, homage to the Sangha. Homage to the spiritual guardians, to all the watchful protectors, and to the majestic powers—may it be so.

"If you invoke the Eight Classes of Spirits and form their eight hand seals while reciting the previous mantra twenty-one times, they will appear instantly. World-Honored One! I wish for this teaching to be spread throughout the world, so that all beings may receive and uphold it, granting them great protection."

Atavaka has seventy-two great generals who command ghosts and spirits, thirty-two great spirit kings, and twenty-eight ghost kings. Each king leads twenty-five thousand followers, constantly attending and serving the Marshal General. If a person or ghost hears the names of these great spirits, or if the general becomes angry, recite the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva one hundred and eight times. If any ghosts or spirits become angry, take a handful of ash, blow it toward them, and form a small boundary. Conduct healing practices according to the Peacock King method. If you wish to see ghosts and spirits, collect piglet remains on the seventh day of the seventh month, take them for twenty-one days, and you will be able to see them.

Here is the translation of the Buddhist scripture passage "次阿吒婆拘法" into accessible modern English:

Next, the Dharma of Aṭavaka.

Prepare twelve arrows, two knives, forty-nine oil lamps, and vessels filled separately with ghee, milk, and honey. Also prepare two mirrors. To establish the sacred boundary, recite the mantra over white mustard seeds and scatter them in the four directions. Do not use thread or cord to mark the boundary. Instead, use willow branches, peach branches, and marsh reeds for the fire. Then, use the "Deva Net" seal, recite the mantra three times, and tie twelve knots.
