The Marici One-Mudra Dharma is an important scripture of Buddhist Esotericism, traditionally translated by masters such as Amoghavajra during the Tang Dynasty. This practice originated during the flourishing period of Indian Tantric Buddhism and was transmitted eastward to China alongside esoteric teachings. Its core content consists of the ritual practices of Bodhisattva Marici, employing specific hand mudras and visualization methods to seek worldly benefits such as dispelling calamities, resolving difficulties, invisibility, and protection. In the Buddhist system, Marici is revered as a significant guardian deity. This practice embodies the Esoteric Buddhist ideal of attaining enlightenment in this very body and belongs to the practical system of the mantra school. Historically, it was highly esteemed by the warrior class and has been continuously transmitted within East Asian Buddhism, particularly in the Japanese Shingon tradition.

Marici One-Seal Ritual

There are two seals: the body seal and the invisible seal. First, form the body seal. With the mind focused, recite the mantra seven times, blessing five places on the body. The five places are: first, the heart; second, the forehead; third, the left shoulder; fourth, the right shoulder; fifth, the crown of the head. The form of the body seal: with the palms held open and the fingers gathered into a fist, bend the tips of the two middle fingers and wrap them around the tips of the two index fingers—this is the Great Vajra Wheel Seal. The mantra is:

Om, enter the retinue of the noble ones, svaha.

Next, form the Invisibility Mudra and recite the mantra one hundred and eight times with focused mind. Through the empowering force of this mudra and mantra, all heavenly demons, evil spirits, unwholesome forces, and outside paths find no opportunity against you, nor can they see the practitioner's body. Even if they search, their evil power is exhausted in vain, and they cannot perceive the body of the mantra practitioner. Therefore, during each of the seven daily activities, you may empower yourself with this mudra and mantra. The seven activities are: first, when sleeping; second, when waking; third, when bathing; fourth, when traveling far; fifth, when receiving guests; sixth, when eating and drinking; seventh, when using the toilet. Empower the five places of the body with the body mudra, and with the body mudra visualize hiding within the city of the vajra-solid wisdom fist. For the invisibility mudra: with the left hand form a hollow fist, extend the right palm with its five fingers covering the left hollow fist, leaving no gap. The mind-body mantra is:

Om, Arya Jvala Mani Jvala Svaha
