Sutra of the Dharani that Purifies All Eye Diseases

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra, Duke of Su, with the Title of Kaifu Yitong Sansi

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Śākya clan's settlement of Kapilavastu. At that time, there was a man of the Śākya clan living in the settlement of Cāṇḍimaka. He had pure faith in the Buddha, pure faith in the Dharma, and pure faith in the Sangha. He took refuge in the Buddha, took refuge in the Dharma, and took refuge in the Sangha. He had no doubts about the Buddha, no doubts about the Dharma, and no doubts about the Sangha. He devoted his heart to the Buddha, devoted his heart to the Dharma, and devoted his heart to the Sangha, firmly determined to attain supreme enlightenment. However, his eyes could no longer see forms.

At that time, the Shakya clansman Kshemaka, remembering the Tathagata, spoke these words: "I bow to the Buddha, the World-Honored One, the torch of wisdom, the one who brings illumination. I take refuge in the Blessed One, the greatly compassionate one. Please protect and accept me, and grant me clear vision."

At that moment, the World-Honored One, transcending the ordinary ears and eyes of the world, heard with the divine ear and saw with the divine eye. Then the World-Honored One said to Ananda, "Go to the Shakya clan and apply this dharani mantra to protect them. Let it purify their eyes, deliver them, embrace them, nurture them, establish a protective boundary, and free their eyes from impurities and illness. Widely spread this to the fourfold assembly: monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and all other sentient beings. The mantra is as follows:

Tadyatha, hili mili liki hili hete, huyu huyu huyu maninge, huru huru nuru nuru, svaha.

Ananda, this Dharani King of Brightness addresses eye afflictions, wind afflictions, and the three gatherings of illness—jaundice, phlegm, and fever. May it prevent pain in my eyes and the eyes of so‑and‑so, and keep tears from flowing. By the true speech of the Arhats, by the true speech of the precepts, by the true speech of ascetic practice, by the true speech of the sages, by the true speech of dependent arising, by the true speech of suffering, the true speech of its origin, the true speech of its cessation, the true speech of the path, by the true speech of the Pratyekabuddhas—I, so‑and‑so, vow that my eyes shall be purified.

The Seven Buddhas, fully awakened, have spoken it; I, Shakyamuni, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened, now speak it; the Four Great Heavenly Kings also speak it; Lord Shakra also speaks it; Brahma, Lord of the Sahā World, also speaks it. Ananda, I see no one in the realms of gods or demons, among ascetics or brahmins, who upholds this Purifying‑Eye Dharani yet suffers from films, clouds, or floating specks before the eyes. Whether caused by gods, nagas, yakshas, rakshasas, rakshasi, pishachi, kumbhandas, kumbhandi, corpse‑raising spirits, human curses, or brahmin incantations—none dare oppose it, and none fail to respond.

Venerable Ananda, receive now this Dharani. Take it to the Shakya clan’s settlement and give it to Kshaimaka. Relay my words: have him recite and uphold this Dharani three times by day and three times by night.

Ananda then went and gave it to Kshaimaka. As soon as Kshaimaka heard this Dharani, the channels of his eyes were cleansed, his vision was restored, and he was freed from all defilements.

Then, when the World-Honored One had finished speaking this sutra, the gods, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and all others present, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and resolved to practice it.
