Sutra of the Wisdom Torch Dharani

唐三藏法師提雲般若等奉 制譯

Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Divākara of Tang, by Imperial Order

如是我聞:一時佛在日月宮中,與無量大菩薩眾俱,普賢菩薩、文殊師利菩薩、陀羅尼自在王菩薩、執金剛菩薩,如是等菩薩摩訶薩而為上首。

Thus I have heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Sun-Moon Palace, together with a vast, immeasurable assembly of great bodhisattvas. Among them were the Bodhisattvas Samantabhadra, Manjushri, Bodhisattva King of the Free Dharani, and Vajrapani—these and other great bodhisattvas were the leaders.

爾時東方有佛號智炬如來,南方有佛號金光聚如來,西方有佛號實語如來,北方有佛號雷音王如來,各從本國而來此會。

At that time, from the east came a Buddha named Wisdom Torch, from the south came a Buddha named Golden Light Gatherer, from the west came a Buddha named Truth Speaker, and from the north came a Buddha named King of Thunder Sounds. Each of them left their own lands and came to this gathering.

At that time, the World-Honored One, together with the Tathāgatas and the assembly of Bodhisattvas, were gathered within a magnificent stupa adorned with golden banners. Each sat upon a jeweled lion throne. Then the Sun and Moon Gods (Surya and Chandra Deva) approached the Buddha, bowed their heads in reverence to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and made offerings with various exquisite objects. After presenting their offerings, they stepped back and sat to one side, saying to one another, "How can we, from the Tathāgatas and Bodhisattvas, awaken the Dharani of the Wisdom Torch for all beings—a light that dispels all darkness and fills the ten directions? Through the power of this Dharani, may we become a great bright torch for all beings." As they spoke these words, the Tathāgatas and the assembly of Bodhisattvas simultaneously recited a mantra:

This is the Dharani of the Great Compassionate One, spoken in Sanskrit sounds. When chanted, it invokes the presence and blessings of the holy beings.

The first phrase, *Namo ratna-trayaya*, means "Homage to the Three Jewels." Then, we honor the great Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

The core of the dharani is a series of powerful syllables: *Om*, the cosmic sound; *Ah*, the unmanifest; and *Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhi*, the seed syllables of the five Buddha families.

Then comes the heart of the invocation: *Namo sarva tathagatebhyah*. This means "Homage to all the Thus-Gone Ones (Buddhas)."

It continues with affirmations of purity, compassion, and swift action: *Svaha* at the end of many lines is like an offering, an "Amen," meaning "So be it" or "Hail" as we dedicate the recitation.

The dharani ends by invoking the power of all the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas, and the guardians of the Dharma, and repeats the final dedication *Svaha* to seal the merit.
