Buddha Speaks the Dharani Sutra of Wisdom Light Extinguishing All Karmic Obstructions

如是我聞：
Thus have I heard:
一時世尊在日月天子宮，復有智光如來、真實如來、金光聚如來、甚深聲王如來、忿怒如來、寶月如來、及普賢菩薩摩訶薩、妙吉祥菩薩摩訶薩、持地王菩薩摩訶薩、金剛手菩薩摩訶薩，與如是等諸佛菩薩摩訶薩俱。
At one time, the World-Honored One was in the palace of the Sun and Moon Heavenly Kings, accompanied by the Tathāgata of Wisdom Light, the Tathāgata of True Reality, the Tathāgata of Golden Light Gatherings, the Tathāgata of the Deep Sound King, the Tathāgata of Wrath, the Tathāgata of the Jewel Moon, as well as the Great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, the Great Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, the Great Bodhisattva Earth-Holder King, and the Great Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi. Together with these Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, they were all present.
爾時世尊與諸如來及菩薩摩訶薩等，於彼宮內勝旛樓閣中，各各於坐閻浮檀金寶莊嚴師子之座，巍巍堂堂由如金山，威光晃然互相照耀。
At that time, the World-Honored One, together with all the Thus-Come Ones and the great bodhisattvas, were gathered within that palace, in the majestic tower pavilion. Each took their seat upon lion thrones adorned with radiant gold and precious jewels, magnificent and towering like golden mountains, their awe-inspiring brilliance shining forth and illuminating one another.
爾時宮主日月天子見是諸佛及大菩薩威德熾盛超過諸天，生希有心歡喜踊躍，住立佛前內自思惟：「今此諸佛及大菩薩，乃是一切眾生界燈，必能照破諸惡黑暗。云何令我復得陀羅尼變化智，生於十方如彼威德，當與一切眾生而作照明。」是時如來及諸佛菩薩摩訶薩等，咸悉知彼宮主天子心之所念。
At that time, the palace lord, the Sun and Moon Heavenly King, saw the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas whose majestic virtue blazed brightly, surpassing all heavenly beings. Filled with wonder and joy, he stood before the Buddhas and reflected within himself: "These Buddhas and great bodhisattvas are truly lamps for all sentient beings, certain to illuminate and break through all darkness and evil. How might I too attain the wisdom of transformation through mantras, so that I might appear in the ten directions with such majesty and bring light to all beings?" At that moment, the Tathāgata and all the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas knew exactly what was in the heart of the palace lord, the heavenly king.
爾時世尊謂宮主日月天子言：「天子！汝可諦聽，我今為汝說佛菩薩名及陀羅尼。」是時宮主日月天子受教而聽，即說佛菩薩名曰：曩謨智光如來、曩謨真實如來、曩謨金光聚如來、曩謨甚深聲王如來、曩謨我釋迦牟尼如來、曩謨忿怒如來、曩謨寶月如來、曩謨普賢菩薩摩訶薩、曩謨妙吉祥菩薩摩訶薩、曩謨持地王菩薩摩訶薩、曩謨金剛手菩薩摩訶薩。復說陀羅尼曰：
「怛儞也(二合)他(引)(一)三野體難作芻那那作芻鉢囉(二合)婆度囉彌(引)蹉迦囉(二)伊伊體探娑酥囉那娑酥囉那(三)阿他娑伊蹉娑(四)吠(引)囉吠(引)羅(引)(五)波里拏(引)摩左嚕沒哩底(二合)儞(六)阿嚩尼阿囉尼(七)迦羅(引)波尼(引)迦羅(引)波尼(引)(八)覩嚕度細覩嚕度細(九)覩哩吐(二合)嚕度細(十)囉(引)遜底遜底(十一)閉哩閉哩(十二)度嚕度嚕度嚕度嚕(十三)迦(引)羅迦(引)羅(十四)娑蹉(引)酥娑蹉酥(十五)詣羅詣羅(十六)詣羅(引)波野詣羅(引)波野(十七)賀酥嚕賀酥嚕(十八)馱酥遜度遜部細蹉酥阿他娑(引)波儞惹野嚕哩(引)他酥哩(引)枳囉(十九)虞哩摩(二合)虞哩摩(二合)(二十)虞哩摩(二合)播尼計(引)魯計(引)魯(二十一)計(引)羅(引)播尼迦囉迦(二合引)哩(引)(二十二)楞度禰(引)度嚕禰(引)(二十三)摩賀(引)度嚕禰(引)(二十四)迦囉迦囉(二十五)枳哩枳哩(二十六)尾普細尾普細(二十七)度酥度酥(二十八)賀酥賀酥(二十九)賀娑播尼娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(三十)」
Tadyathā: Oṃ, threefold purity of body, speech, and mind. May all obstacles be cleared. May wisdom shine forth. Salutations to the profound and illuminating one. Salutations to the protector of all beings. May compassion flow without end. May the light of truth dispel all darkness. May the heart be filled with loving-kindness. May peace pervade all directions. May harm be averted, harm be averted. May confusion be dispelled, confusion be dispelled. May fear be released, fear be released. May virtue grow, virtue grow. May the path be clear, the path be clear. Salutations to the noble one who leads across the storm. Salutations to the guide who shows the way. May joy arise, joy arise. May bliss be experienced, bliss be experienced. May the truth be known, the truth be known. May the great protector, the compassionate one, uphold all beings. May blessings be bestowed. Salutations to the one of great radiance. Salutations to the victorious one. May blessings abound. So it is.
爾時世尊說是陀羅尼已，彼普賢菩薩摩訶薩告宮主日月天子言：「天子！此陀羅尼乃是過去八十八俱胝諸佛同共宣說，如來大慈大悲，為欲擁護利益一切眾生今復宣說。天子！此陀羅尼微妙希有難值難聞，譬如優曇鉢花希有難見，又如如來出現世間希有難值，此陀羅尼亦復如是。天子！若佛滅後正法滅時，或有眾生造五逆罪，必當墮於阿鼻地獄。是人若得值遇此陀羅尼，能淨身心勇猛堅固，於二十一晝夜，晝三時、夜三時，心心相續無令間斷，念此陀羅尼章句志心懺悔者，是人無間之業滅盡無餘。天子，又復是人以此陀羅尼章句威德力故，可使阿鼻地獄破為百分乃至無有遺餘，復令是中罪業眾生亦得解脫，各各生於南閻浮提，悉得人身，復得聞知，此是諸佛菩薩以陀羅尼功德之力救拔於我。何況持誦之人自身業耶！」
At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this mantra, the great bodhisattva Samantabhadra said to the divine lord of sun and moon, “Lord of devas! This mantra was proclaimed together by eighty-eight million Buddhas of the past. Out of great compassion and mercy, the Tathāgata has now proclaimed it again, wishing to protect and benefit all sentient beings. Lord of devas, this mantra is subtle, wondrous, and rare — difficult to encounter and difficult to hear. It is like the udumbara flower, which is rarely seen, and like the appearance of a Tathāgata in the world, which is difficult to encounter. This mantra is likewise.
Lord of devas, if after the Buddha’s passing, when the true Dharma is about to be extinguished, there are sentient beings who commit the five heinous offenses and are certain to fall into the Avīci hell — if such a person is fortunate enough to encounter this mantra, and is able to purify body and mind with courageous steadfastness, and for twenty-one days and nights, during the three periods of the day and three periods of the night, keeps their mind continuously focused without interruption, reciting the phrases of this mantra with sincere repentance — then all of that person’s karma of uninterrupted offenses will be completely eradicated, leaving nothing behind.
Lord of devas, furthermore, through the majestic power of this mantra’s phrases, such a person can shatter the Avīci hell into a hundred pieces, leaving not even a remnant, and can cause the sentient beings suffering within it to be liberated. Each of them will be reborn in the southern continent of Jambudvīpa, all obtaining human bodies, and will come to know: ‘It is through the meritorious power of the bodhisattvas and the mantra that we have been rescued.’ How much more so, then, for the karmic obstructions of those who personally uphold and recite it!”
爾時普賢菩薩復謂宮主日月天子言：「天子！我亦為欲利益安樂一切眾生，末世之時持誦此陀羅尼者，亦說陀羅尼而為擁護，當令一切人非人等無能惱亂故。」即說陀羅尼曰：
「怛儞也(二合)他(引)(一)度曩致摩賀(引)度曩致(二)酥嚕酥嚕娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(三)戌羯囉(二合)尾戌馱儞馱囉娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(四)祖度瑟鉢囉(二合)禰閉覩嚕娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(五)鉢納摩(二合)麼(引)隷儞(六)薩怛也(二合)羅帝(引)酥沒囉(二合)帝(引)(七)酥多閉阿鉢囉(二合)底賀沒弟(八)酥嚕酥嚕娑嚩(二合)賀(引)(九)馱囉馱囉(十)馱囉焰底曳(引)娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(十一)囉乞叉(二合引)哩爾(二合引)帝(引)(十二)度波波哩迦哩(引)(十三)左跓嚕跓嚕娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(十四)馱(引)囉馱(引)囉摩賀(引)馱(引)囉尼寅(二合)底曳(引)娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(十五)酥囉帝(引)酥沒囉(二合)帝(引)(十六)阿鉢囉(二合)底賀多沒弟(十七)馱囉馱囉馱隣底曳(引)娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(十八)曩謨(引)婆誐嚩帝(引)(十九)惹拏(二合)曩囉迦(二合引)野怛他(引)誐哆野悉殿覩弭(引)滿怛囉(二合)播那(引)娑嚩(二合引)賀(引)(二十)」
Tadyathā: Om, dānade mahā dānade, suru suru svāhā. Śuklā viśuddhani dharā svāhā. Cuduṣ prabhā nībhi tulu svāhā. Padma māle ni. Satya rati suvr̥te, suvṛttaya aprati hata buddhi. Suru suru svāhā. Dharā dharā, dharā yanti ye svāhā. Rakṣa ṛcchīti. Dhūpa parikāri. Ca curu curu svāhā. Dharā dharā mahā dhāraṇī yantīye svāhā. Surati suvr̥tī, aprati hata buddhi. Dharā dharā dhalīnti ye svāhā. Namo bhagavate jñānā rākāya tathāgatāya. Siddhantu me mantra pāda svāhā.
爾時日月天子聞佛世尊及普賢菩薩摩訶薩說是佛菩薩名及陀羅尼已，心中所疑皆悉除斷，發菩提心誓不退轉，歡喜踊躍作禮而退。
At that time, the Sun and Moon Devas, having heard the Buddha, the World-Honored One, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra speak these names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and the dharanis, all their doubts were completely resolved. They aroused the mind of enlightenment, vowing never to turn back, and with great joy and excitement, paid their respects and withdrew.
