The Buddha Speaks the Sutra on the Five Fears of the World
Translated by Layman Song Juqu Jingsheng
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Monastery in the kingdom of Shravasti. The Buddha said to the monks: "There are five future terrors that have not yet arrived, have not yet come to be, but will come before long. They are frightening. You should reflect on them well and find skillful ways to avoid them. What are these five?"
First, in the future there will be monks who lack discipline in body and conduct, whose minds are unrestrained, and who have no wisdom. Without discipline in body or conduct, with unrestrained minds, and lacking wisdom, such people will study the great precepts, and from their study they will take themselves as teachers — as if their own discipline, their own restraint of mind, and their own understanding of wisdom were sufficient. Though they started at the top of the learning and rank, when it comes to later students, they will destroy the discipline that earlier students followed, slander the Dharma scriptures, and drift far from true wisdom. Monks, this is the first future danger and terror, and it is coming before long. You should think on it carefully and find skillful means to avoid it.
"Second, there will be monks in the future who do not practice bodily discipline, do not observe the precepts, do not restrain their minds, and lack wisdom. For their sake, one teaches about a hidden treasure, speaking out of order, lacking inner discipline oneself, and going against the Buddha's instructions while having others learn—claiming that through this one can reach the far shore, though it is actually a distant, wandering path. This is the second future danger, and it will come before long. One should carefully reflect and skillfully avoid it."
Third, there will come a time when future monks will have no practice and no precepts, their minds will be unrestrained, and they will lack wisdom. Having no true teacher, they will receive incorrect teachings. Monks will learn from them, and so the true meaning of the Dharma and the monastic rules will be lost. This is the third fear for the future, and it is coming before long. You should reflect on this carefully and find skillful ways to avoid it.
Fourth, in the future, there will be monks who are undisciplined in body and conduct, unrestrained in mind, and lacking in wisdom. Because they are undisciplined in body and conduct, unrestrained in mind, and lacking in wisdom, when monks gather to discuss the Precepts and explain their meaning, what was said later is presented as if it came earlier, and what was said earlier is presented as if it came later. In this way, they lose the light and fall into darkness, unable to awaken themselves, and drift far from the true Dharma. This is the fourth future danger, and it will come before long. You should carefully reflect on this and skillfully find ways to avoid it.
Fifth: In the future, there will be monks who are undisciplined in body, lacking in precepts, unrestrained in mind, and without wisdom. Because they are undisciplined in body, lacking in precepts, unrestrained in mind, and without wisdom, they will eagerly embrace whatever clever, idle talk the world produces. When they see others reciting such things, they take delight in them. But when a venerable teacher speaks in accordance with the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, Suffering, Emptiness, and Impermanence, they feel no joy, and they reject it entirely. Hearing such teachings, they doubt and disagree, and take no delight in them. This is the fifth future danger, and it will come before long. You should reflect on this carefully and find skillful ways to avoid it.
Thus spoke the Buddha.
