Sengjiapoluo was a renowned translator of the Liang Dynasty, and the Bodhisattva Piṭaka Sūtra is an important Mahāyāna Buddhist scripture translated by him. This sutra was compiled during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, reflecting the spread of Mahāyāna Bodhisattva-path thought in China at that time. Its main content expounds the methods of Bodhisattva practice, including generating the bodhicitta, cultivating the six pāramitās and all virtuous practices, accumulating merit and wisdom, and emphasizes the Mahāyāna spirit of benefiting both oneself and others. This sutra constitutes a significant part of the Mahāyāna Bodhisattva Piṭaka and has profoundly influenced the theory and practice of the Bodhisattva path in Chinese Buddhism, providing practitioners with a systematic doctrinal foundation.

Sutra of the Bodhisattva Treasury

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Sanghapala of Funan, Liang Dynasty

Thus I have heard:

Once, the Buddha was staying at the Jeta Grove in the kingdom of Shravasti, together with a great community of twelve hundred and fifty monks and seventy-two thousand Bodhisattvas. At that time, the elder Shariputra, empowered by the Buddha’s spiritual presence, rose from his seat, arranged his robe to bare his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms in reverence to the Buddha, and said: “World-Honored One, how can virtuous men and women purify their transgressions through repentance and swiftly attain Complete Perfect Enlightenment?”

The Buddha said to Shariputra: "Those who wish to study the state of complete, perfect enlightenment—whether they are followers of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, the Great Vehicle, or any other beings—should recite the names of the ten Buddhas of the ten directions in ten worlds. They should then light ten thousand lamps, using butter, oil, incense, or powdered incense, matching the number of lamps, and make grand offerings with all kinds of flowers, fruits, and leaves, performing great acts of generosity. They should fill ten kalasha vessels and ten water pots with water, bathe to purify themselves, perfume their bodies with incense, put on fresh clean clothes, wash their hands and feet again, and then hold ten lotus flowers in each hand. They should eat a vegetarian diet, and ensure that all servants and attendants are also clean and pure. In each of the ten directions, a seat for the Buddha should be arranged (The Buddha’s seat in the upper direction should be slightly elevated.). The person repenting should set up a seat facing each direction, and from their seated position, bow to the Buddhas of the ten directions, confessing with their own mouth all the actions and deeds they have ever done, and also repenting of all the evil they have created since beginningless time in the cycle of birth and death. They should resolve to change their past ways, cultivate good conduct for the future, and vow never to do wrong again!"

The Buddha said: "Shariputra! To the east is the world called Ashoka (This means 'Without Sorrow'), where there is a Buddha named Moon-Victory-Auspicious. To the south is the world called Nanda (This means 'Joyful'), where there is a Buddha named Sandalwood-Auspicious. To the west is the world called Bhadra (This means 'Virtuous'), where there is a Buddha named Infinite Light. To the north is the world called Beneficial-Eye, where there is a Buddha named Banner-Auspicious. To the southeast is the world called Moonlight, where there is a Buddha named Without-Sorrow-Auspicious. To the southwest is the world called Banner, where there is a Buddha named Jewel-Temple. To the northwest is the world called Sound, where there is a Buddha named Flower-Virtue. To the northeast is the world called Peaceful-Security, where there is a Buddha named Three-Brave-Mighty. Above is the world called Moon, where there is a Buddha named Great-Merit-Auspicious. Below is the world called Great-Fame, where there is a Buddha named Light-Auspicious. For a full day and night, during the six periods of practice, one should circumambulate and pay homage. With the right shoulder bared, the right knee on the ground, and palms joined, facing the Buddhas, say this: 'I bow to all the Buddhas, the Thus-Come Ones. Those Buddhas now in the ten directions have already attained complete, perfect enlightenment. They now turn the Wheel of Dharma, manifest the Wheel of Light, take up the Wheel of Dharma, rain the rain of Dharma, beat the drum of Dharma, blow the conch of Dharma, raise the banner of Dharma, light the torch of Dharma, and with Dharma-gifts abundantly satisfy all beings. According to the wishes of every being, they teach each one, bringing great benefit, helping beings find peace and security, and showing compassion to the world, enriching the realms of gods and humans. I now bow my head to those Thus-Come Ones. Those Thus-Come Ones, those Buddhas, are greatly revered and should be offered veneration. The Buddhas are great wisdom, they are the eyes of the world, they can bear witness for the world, they lead the world, they see and know all things as they truly are. With my body, speech, and mind, I respectfully bow to those Buddhas.'

"Ever since beginningless time, bound by birth and death, I have committed evil deeds that hinder all sentient beings. I have given rise to greed, anger, or ignorance, and failed to recognize the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, or to distinguish good from bad karma. Through evil action of body, speech, and mind, I have drawn blood from the Buddha, slandered the true Dharma, disrupted the harmonious Sangha, killed Arhats, killed my own parents, or committed the ten unwholesome deeds—whether done in the past, present, or future, or done by others that I praised or rejoiced in. Through the three actions of body, four of speech, and three of mind, I have created countless evils: harsh words, curses, slandering others, cheating with false scales or measures. Born in the six realms, I have troubled and upset my parents, stolen items from stupas or temples, misused offerings meant for the Sangha or the four directions, broken the precepts set by the Buddha, disobeyed my teachers and masters, given in to anger or abuse, slandered the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, or the Great Vehicle. Out of stinginess or jealousy, I have committed various evils, spoken harshly of the Tathagata, called the Dharma non-Dharma, or called non-Dharma the Dharma.

Now, I openly confess all these evils before the Buddhas of the ten directions! Those Tathagatas see, know, and witness everything right now. With a focused mind, I confess before the Buddhas, daring to conceal nothing. After confessing, I vow never to commit such deeds again. These evil karmas should lead me to the realms of hell, hungry ghosts, animals, or asuras, or to the eight difficulties. May all these karmas dissolve before me now, and never arise in the future!"

Shariputra, I now confess and repent before all the Buddhas, hiding nothing. Having confessed, I vow never to commit these acts again. Just as the Bodhisattvas of the past confessed as they practiced for enlightenment, so do I now confess my obstructive karma, hiding nothing, and vow not to repeat it. Just as the great Bodhisattvas of the future will confess, so do I now confess and repent, vowing never to do it again. Just as the great Bodhisattvas of the present in the ten directions confess while practicing for enlightenment, so do I now confess and repent, vowing never to repeat it. Just as the great Bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present—those who have confessed, will confess, and are now confessing as they practice for enlightenment—so do I now confess, vowing never to commit these acts again.

Shariputra, if a good man or good woman wishes to repent, this is how they should do it.

"Therefore, Shariputra, if good men and good women wish to attain complete purity in all phenomena, free without obstruction, they should repent for all unwholesome karmic hindrances in this way. Having confessed them openly, they should vow never to commit them again. If they wish to be reborn among the noble warrior class or in wealthy families, possessing abundant treasures, full endowment, and a handsome appearance, they should practice this repentance. If they wish to embrace the Great Vehicle, they should repent in this way. If they wish to reach the realm of the Four Heavenly Kings, they should repent in this way. If they wish to reach the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, the Yama Heaven, the Tushita Heaven, the Heaven of Joyful Manifestation, or the Heaven of Freely Enjoying Others' Creations, they should repent in this way. If they wish to reach the Heaven of the Brahma Body, the Heaven of Brahma Ministers, the Great Brahma Heaven, the Minor Radiance, the Immeasurable Radiance, the Radiant Light, the Minor Purity, the Immeasurable Purity, the Complete Purity, the Heaven of Unobstructed Blessings, the Heaven of Ripe Fruits, the Heaven of No Thought, the Unafflicted, the Unheated, the Beautiful Sight, the Beautiful Appearance, or the Heaven of Ultimate Form, they should repent in this way. If they wish to be reborn in the formless realms of Infinite Space, Infinite Consciousness, Nothingness, or Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, they should repent in this way. If they wish to attain the fruits of Stream-Enterer, Once-Returner, Non-Returner, or Arhat, they should repent in this way. If they wish to gain the Three Clear Knowledges, the Six Supernatural Powers, spiritual mastery, keen intelligence, and sharp wisdom of a Hearer; if they wish to attain the Enlightenment of a Solitary Realizer, they should repent in this way. If they wish to attain the wisdom of omniscience, pure wisdom, inconceivable wisdom, incomparable wisdom, or perfect universal wisdom, they should repent in this way."

"Shariputra, why is this? All phenomena arise from causes and conditions. As the Tathagata teaches, things arise from conditions and cease due to conditions. Because causes and conditions are in constant succession, the past phenomena—those that have already ceased and transformed—create no obstacle for karma. Likewise, phenomena that have not yet arisen present no obstacle either. Shariputra, why is this? All phenomena, as taught by the Tathagata, are completely empty and still. There is no sentient being, no life span, no person; they neither arise nor cease. Shariputra, all phenomena are created by the self itself, and this self truly exists. Shariputra, if a virtuous man or woman wishes to enter into this wisdom of phenomena—namely, that there is no true sentient being—this is what is meant by 'the teaching on extinguishing all karmic obstacles.'" Thus ends the chapter on Confession.

At that time, Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! When good men and good women seek to attain supreme enlightenment, when they wish to follow the paths of the hearers, the solitary realizers, or the great vehicle, and when others cultivate merit—how should they generate the roots of goodness through joyful rejoicing?"

Then the Buddha said to Shariputra, "Good men and good women who wish to practice rejoicing should, at six times during the day and night, bare their right shoulder, kneel on their right knee, respectfully join their palms, and say these words:

'If any beings in the ten directions have already performed meritorious deeds—whether giving, keeping precepts, or cultivating practice—I rejoice in all of them. With the foremost rejoicing, the excellent rejoicing, the supreme rejoicing, the unsurpassed rejoicing, the incomparable rejoicing, and the peerless rejoicing, I thus rejoice in all of them.

If any beings in the ten directions will perform meritorious deeds—whether giving, keeping precepts, or cultivating practice—I rejoice in all of them. With the foremost rejoicing, the excellent rejoicing, the supreme rejoicing, the unsurpassed rejoicing, the incomparable rejoicing, and the peerless rejoicing, I thus rejoice in all of them.

If any beings in the ten directions are now performing meritorious deeds—whether giving, keeping precepts, or cultivating practice—I rejoice in all of them. With the foremost rejoicing, the excellent rejoicing, the supreme rejoicing, the unsurpassed rejoicing, the incomparable rejoicing, and the peerless rejoicing, I thus rejoice in all of them.'"

"I rejoice in all the merits of those bodhisattvas who first give rise to the aspiration for enlightenment, the merits they accumulate over a hundred lifetimes of practice, the merits of those who have attained patience with the unborn nature of reality, and the merits of those who have reached the stage of non-retrogression. I rejoice in the merits of bodhisattvas as they progress from one stage to the next all the way to the tenth stage. With the highest joy, the supreme joy, and even the incomparable joy, I rejoice in all of this.

I rejoice in all the virtuous roots and merits that bodhisattvas have already cultivated through the practice of the six perfections. With the highest joy, the supreme joy, and even the incomparable joy, I rejoice in all of this.

I rejoice in all the virtuous roots and merits that future bodhisattvas will cultivate through the practice of the six perfections. With the highest joy, the supreme joy, and even the incomparable joy, I rejoice in all of this.

I rejoice in all the virtuous roots and merits that present bodhisattvas are now cultivating through the practice of the six perfections. With the highest joy, the supreme joy, and even the incomparable joy, I rejoice in all of this."

"All past Tathagatas, Worthy of Offerings, and Perfectly Enlightened Ones have already attained Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. They have already turned the Wheel of the Dharma. They have done this to benefit living beings, to bring them peace and stability, to show them compassion, to benefit them with meaning—whether those beings are gods, humans, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, or Bodhisattvas. Whatever merit they have created, I rejoice in it completely.

The future Tathagatas will attain Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. They will turn the Wheel of the Dharma. They will do this to benefit living beings, to bring them peace and stability, to show them compassion, to benefit them with meaning—whether those beings are gods, humans, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, or Bodhisattvas. Whatever merit they will create, I rejoice in it completely.

The present Buddhas in the ten directions have attained Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. They are turning the Wheel of the Dharma, lighting the Torch of Truth, beating the Drum of Truth, blowing the Conch of Truth, and raising the Banner of Truth. They are giving the gift of Truth, filling living beings with it, benefiting them, bringing them peace and stability, and showing compassion to the world. They benefit all beings—gods and humans—with meaning. Whether it is the merit created by Hearers, Solitary Realizers, or those of the Great Vehicle, I rejoice in it all. I rejoice with the highest form of rejoicing, even with the unequaled form of rejoicing."

"Shariputra, this is what is called the 'mass of merit from rejoicing.' If a virtuous man or woman practices this merit of rejoicing, its reward cannot be counted or measured.

Shariputra, suppose all beings throughout a great trichiliocosm—or even throughout as many worlds as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River—were to exhaust their defilements and become Arhats. If a virtuous man or woman were to provide them with the four necessities for their entire lives, the merit gained from that act of rejoicing would still surpass that offering's merit beyond measure.

Therefore, Shariputra, if a virtuous man or woman aspires to attain Anuttara Samyaksambodhi, they should practice this rejoicing. If a woman wishes to be reborn as a man, she should also practice this rejoicing."

At that time, Shariputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, you have already spoken about rejoicing, which serves as a light for present and future Bodhisattvas. But how does one practice the act of 'requesting instruction'?"

The Buddha told Shariputra: "If a good man or good woman wishes to attain supreme, perfect enlightenment — whether they follow the Hearer’s path, the Solitary Buddha’s path, the Great Vehicle, or any other way — they should, six times each day and night, bare their right shoulder, kneel on their right knee, press their palms together with respect, and speak these words:

'I pay homage to all buddhas and world-honored ones. Those buddhas now present in the ten directions have already attained supreme, perfect enlightenment and are now turning the wheel of the Dharma. I have already bowed to them. Now I earnestly request them to keep turning the wheel of the Dharma. May the buddhas and world-honored ones turn the wheel of the Dharma. May they light the lamp of Dharma. May they open the Dharma-eye. May they raise the torch of Dharma. May they send forth the clouds of Dharma. May they blow the conch of Dharma. May they beat the drum of Dharma. May they raise the banner of Dharma — all for the benefit of beings, for their peace and well-being, for compassion toward the world, and to bring meaning and good to all gods and humans!'

Shariputra! Six times each day and night, bare your right shoulder, kneel on your right knee, press your palms together with respect, and speak these words:

'I pay homage to all buddhas and world-honored ones. If any buddha in the ten directions is about to enter nirvana, I will earnestly request that buddha: Please remain in the world for a long time, for the benefit of beings, for their peace and well-being, for compassion toward the world, and to bring meaning and good to all gods and humans. For the sake of supreme, perfect enlightenment, I make this entreaty!'"

"Shariputra, this is called the practice of requesting teachings. The merit and virtue that a good man or good woman gains from this practice is immeasurable. Shariputra, if a good man or good woman were to fill the entire great trichiliocosm with the seven treasures and offer them to the Tathāgata, the merit of a good man or good woman who practices this requesting would surpass that offering, being infinite and boundless. Shariputra, if one were to fill worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven treasures and offer them to all Buddhas, the merit of a good man or good woman who practices this requesting would still surpass that offering, being infinite and boundless.

Thus, one should request for the supreme, perfect enlightenment. This is my way of requesting. Shariputra, this is called the practice of requesting teachings. When a good man or good woman actively makes such a request, their merit is incalculable. Why is that? Shariputra, in my past practice of the bodhisatta path, I myself made requests to all Buddhas to turn the wheel of the Dharma. Through this merit, I attained supreme, perfect enlightenment. Then Śakra, the lord of gods, Brahmā, the ruler of the Sahā world, and other heavenly beings also requested me to turn the wheel of the Dharma — for the benefit and peace of the world, and for the welfare of all beings both human and divine.

Shariputra, I made requests to all Tathāgatas so that the Dharma would long endure. Through the roots of this merit, I attained the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen unique qualities of a Buddha, the four unhindered forms of eloquence, and great loving-kindness and compassion. Now that I have entered Nirvāṇa, my Dharma will long endure."

At that time, Shariputra said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, how should good men and good women who seek supreme, perfect enlightenment — whether they follow the Vehicle of Hearers, the Vehicle of Solitary Realizers, the Great Vehicle, or other beings — dedicate their good roots for the sake of all-knowing wisdom?"

The Buddha then said to Shariputra, "If good men and good women wish to attain supreme enlightenment—whether they follow the path of the hearers, the solitary realizers, the Great Vehicle, or any other beings—let them, at all six times of the day and night, bare their right shoulder, kneel on their right knee, respectfully press their palms together, and say:

"Throughout beginningless births and deaths, whatever merit and wholesome roots I have performed—whether toward the Buddha, the Dharma, or the Sangha; whether giving a single morsel of food to one person or even to an animal; whether through repentance, encouragement, or rejoicing; whether through taking refuge in the Three Jewels or observing precepts—may all these be combined and directed to all beings. Just as the Buddhas and World-Honored Ones, with their wisdom that sees things as they are and wisdom free from attachment, direct all merit to all beings, so too do I direct all merit to all beings.

Like one who holds a precious jewel and gives it to all, like a cloud that sends rain to nourish all—may it be inexhaustible and never diminish. May it bring never-ending richness to beings, never-ending merit, never-ending Dharma, never-ending wisdom, and never-ending eloquence. For the sake of supreme enlightenment and for the attainment of all-knowing wisdom, I dedicate this merit to all beings.

May this combined virtue be wholly directed toward supreme enlightenment. Through this wholesome root, may all beings also attain supreme enlightenment and gain all-knowing wisdom."

"Just as the bodhisattvas of the past cultivated virtuous roots through spiritual practice and dedicated them to attaining all-knowing wisdom for the sake of enlightenment, so do I now dedicate these virtuous roots to attaining all-knowing wisdom. Through these roots, I shall attain supreme, perfect enlightenment and gain all-knowing wisdom. Just as the bodhisattvas of the future will cultivate and dedicate virtuous roots for all-knowing wisdom, so do I now dedicate these roots for that purpose. Just as the bodhisattvas of the present cultivate virtuous roots for all-knowing wisdom, so do I now dedicate these roots for that same goal. Through these virtuous roots, may all beings attain supreme, perfect enlightenment and gain all-knowing wisdom."

‘Just as the ancient Buddha Shakyamuni sat under the Bodhi tree, dwelling in an inconceivable and immaculate state of meditation, he subdued the demons. In that state, all phenomena could be known, seen, and awakened to. At the time when the morning star appeared in the last watch of the night, with a single thought in perfect accord with wisdom, he walked the path that ends suffering and attained the essence of enlightenment—so too do I seek the same.

All living beings aspire to achieve Anuttara Samyaksambodhi. Just as the Tathagatas—such as the Buddha of Infinite Light, the Buddha of Victorious Light, the Buddha of Pure Light, the Buddha of Merit and Virtue, the Buddha Lion, the Buddha of Hundred Lights, the Buddha of High Radiance, the Buddha of Net Light, the Buddha of Jewel Light, the Buddha of Fire Light, the Buddha King of Light, the Buddha of Adornment, the Buddha of Jeweled Banner, the Buddha of Dharma Banner, the Buddha of Supreme Body, and all other buddhas, worthy ones, and perfectly enlightened ones—have attained Anuttara Samyaksambodhi, have turned the wheel of the Dharma for the benefit of many beings, for the peace and well-being of all beings, out of compassion for the world, and for the true benefit of all gods and humans—so too do I seek the same.

Therefore, for the sake of all beings, I will attain Anuttara Samyaksambodhi, turn the wheel of the Dharma, benefit countless beings, bring peace to all beings, show compassion to the world, and offer true benefit to all gods and humans.’

"Shariputra! If a good man or good woman embraces this sutra and teaches it widely to others, the merit they attain is countless and immeasurable. Shariputra! If someone could cause all living beings throughout the three thousand great thousand worlds to attain human forms in a single moment, and then further cause them to attain the enlightenment of Pratyekabuddhas, and constantly make offerings to each Pratyekabuddha with the four necessities, giving each one precious treasures piled as high as Mount Sumeru, doing so day after day until they enter nirvana—and after they enter nirvana, building stupas of seven treasures and making various offerings of flowers, incense, banners, and canopies—Shariputra, what do you think? Would the merit gained by that good man or good woman be great?"

Shariputra said: "So many, World-Honored One! So many, Well-Gone One!"

"Therefore, Shariputra! If a good man or a good woman embraces and upholds this sutra, the merit they gain will be even greater than that. If they dedicate this merit toward supreme enlightenment, then compared to the previous merit, this merit surpasses it by a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million times—indeed, it cannot be measured by calculation or simile. Why is that? Shariputra! Because a good man or a good woman who has faith in this sutra and earnestly invites the Buddhas of the ten directions to turn the wheel of Dharma—as I have said, the giving of Dharma surpasses the giving of material things!"

At that time, the assembly of ten thousand people rose from their seats. They bared their right shoulders, knelt on their right knees, and pressed their palms together facing the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One! We will uphold this sutra and widely teach it to others, placing our faith in it. Why? World-Honored One! We desire to attain supreme enlightenment! We shall cultivate such wholesome roots and such virtuous qualities!"

At that time, Lord Indra, king of the heavens, scattered heavenly flowers as an offering to the World-Honored One and to this Dharma teaching, and spoke these words: "World-Honored One! This sutra possesses great merit and virtue. It serves to increase the wholesome roots of all bodhisattvas and to eradicate karmic obstacles."

At that time, the Buddha said to Lord Shakra, "Indeed, indeed, Kaushika! Why is this so? Heavenly King, I recall that in a past kalpa beyond measure, a Tathagata known as the Great Light Gathering, worthy of offerings, perfectly enlightened, appeared in the world. Heavenly King, this Tathagata, the Great Light Gathering, lived for six billion eight hundred million years. At his first teaching, there were ten billion disciples, all of whom were arhats who had exhausted all defilements. At his second teaching, there were ninety-nine billion disciples, all likewise free from defilements and attaining arhatship. At his third teaching, there were ninety-eight billion hundred thousand disciples, all having ended their defilements and achieved arhatship. Heavenly King, that Tathagata, the Great Light Gathering, abided in the world for six billion eight hundred million years, for the sake of all heavenly beings, Brahma kings, ascetics, and brahmins in the world. At that time, Lord Shakra, along with the fourfold assembly, received and upheld this sutra from the Tathagata of Light Gathering, for the benefit of all beings in the world, and for the attainment of supreme enlightenment."

The Buddha having spoken this sutra, Śakra, the king of gods, along with the elder Shariputra, the assembly of monks, and the bodhisattvas, devas, humans, asuras, and gandharvas—all beings in the world—rejoiced at the Buddha's words and faithfully put them into practice.
