The Buddha Speaks the Mahayana Sutra on Precepts was translated from Sanskrit by the Song Dynasty monk Shi Hu. This sutra emerged during the flourishing period of Mahayana Buddhism, emphasizing precepts as the foundation of practice. Its core content elucidates the pure precepts that Mahayana bodhisattvas should uphold, encompassing the precepts of restraint, the precepts of cultivating wholesome qualities, and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings. It guides practitioners to purify body and mind through the threefold training of precepts, meditation, and wisdom. This sutra reveals that precepts are not merely restrictions but a path to liberation. It holds a lofty position within Mahayana Buddhism, regarded as an authoritative guide for practicing the bodhisattva path, and has profoundly influenced the development of the precept system in Chinese Buddhism.

Sutra on the Great Vehicle Precepts Spoken by the Buddha

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.
