The "Bodhisattva Precept Sutra," translated by Nie Daozhen during the Western Jin Dynasty, is a significant Buddhist scripture. This sutra emerged during the flourishing period of translation in the Western Jin Dynasty, and Nie Daozhen, as a disciple of Dharmarakṣa, inherited a rigorous translation style. The core content of the sutra consists of the Buddha's detailed teachings to Maitreya Bodhisattva on the rituals and merits of observing precepts, with a focus on purifying body, speech, and mind, and cultivating the six perfections of the bodhisattva path. This sutra provides a practical foundation for the Mahayana bodhisattva precept system, emphasizing the crucial role of precepts in accumulating merit and advancing on the path to enlightenment. It has had a profound influence on the dissemination and development of bodhisattva precepts in Chinese Buddhism.

Bodhisattva Uposatha Sutra

The Bodhisattva's Precept Observance says: "I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha. The evil I have done with my body, the evil I have spoken with my mouth, the evil I have thought in my mind—I now abandon and remove them all. For a certain number of days and nights, I keep the Bodhisattva precepts, taking refuge in the Bodhisattvas, just as the sixty thousand Bodhisattvas before me have kept these precepts. I am a Bodhisattva, following the example of the first Bodhisattvas: Manjushri, Huanajulou, Awutuo, Tanwujia, Maitreya, Aweiloushili, Shamenduloutanna, Luoshouleng, and the Bodhisattva of Past Lives who kept these precepts. I am a Bodhisattva, keeping the Bodhisattva precepts. If I practice giving, may I attain the Perfection of Giving (Dana Paramita); if I receive prediction of enlightenment, may I attain the Perfection of Discipline (Shila Paramita); if I practice meditation with a focused mind, may I attain the Perfection of Meditation (Dhyana Paramita); if I teach the Dharma, may I attain the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajna Paramita). This is skillful means (Upaya Kausalya). From this, I attain the Great Perfection of Wisdom (Maha Prajna Paramita). And with the thought of liberating beings in hell, hungry ghosts, and animals—so that they may gain release and be reborn as humans—through this practice of giving, I will eventually arrive before Amitabha Buddha in the Land of Supreme Bliss (Sukhavati) and attain the Samadhi of Meditation." This is the method for observing the Bodhisattva precepts.

On a Bodhisattva's Observance Day, there are ten precepts: First, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not wear makeup or perfume, or apply fragrant powders. Second, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not sing, dance, beat drums, perform music, or adorn themselves. Third, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not sleep on a high bed. Fourth, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not eat after noon. Fifth, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not hold money, knives, gold, silver, or precious jewels. Sixth, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not ride in carts, on oxen, or on horses. Seventh, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not strike or discipline children, servants, or animals. Eighth, when a Bodhisattva observes this observance, they gain merit through giving and sharing. "I am a Bodhisattva. Just as I think of those in hell, hungry ghosts, and animals—that they may be freed and reborn as humans—so too, through this giving and sharing, I will come before the Buddha Amita (Amitabha), who dwells in the heaven of Suḥāmatī Koḍu [Sukhāvatī], and receive the samādhi of meditation. This is the method for a Bodhisattva to conclude the observance day." When a Bodhisattva retires for the night on an Observance Day, they should fold their hands before the Buddha and say: "Today, for all beings in the ten directions who uphold the observance precepts, I help to bring them boundless peace. Today, for all who uphold the precepts, I help to bring them boundless peace. Today, for all who practice patience, thinking of the people of the world, I help to bring them boundless peace. Today, for all who are diligent, I help to bring them boundless peace. Today, for all who have wisdom and teach the sutras, I help to bring them boundless peace. Holding this merit, which comes from rejoicing in and encouraging others' happiness, I dedicate it and let it flow to all people and non-people, the Saha Sangha, in all places of suffering and difficulty, so that all may attain blessings, be freed from sorrow and hardship, be reborn as humans, and dwell in peace, abundance, and happiness without limit." On a Bodhisattva's Observance Day, they must not look upon sweeping or cleaning. Ninth, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not eat everything in their bowl. Tenth, on an Observance Day, a Bodhisattva must not smile or laugh at a woman, nor sit together with her on the same seat—and the same applies to a woman with a man. These are the ten precepts. One must not break them, nor teach others to break them, nor encourage others to break them.

Right, the number of days for fasting observance.
