Heart Sutra (淨心誡觀法)

Those who engage in **wrong livelihood** do things like meticulously cleaning their dwellings, decorating their temples, arranging banners, flowers, and various ritual objects. They frequently wash and shave, always wear their robes, cover their arms and feet, and maintain a perfectly proper appearance—walking slowly and straight, speaking softly and gently, or remaining silent with eyes closed and head bowed, with their bowl and robe always on them, clinging to the outward forms of monastic discipline. Yet, in their hearts, they constantly seek fame and profit, hoping to be invited and called upon, craving respect and reverence. They take on disciples and confer precepts, forcing themselves into the role of master, standing among followers and seeking their dependence. Even if they understand scriptures and precepts, they ask difficult questions to create obstacles. Their nature is full of resentment, and they glare at others with hostility. If they suffer even a minor offense, they refuse to accept apologies. When they speak, they delight in sarcastic remarks. They burn with jealousy when others gain benefits, like fire raging in the heart. The dust and stains of desire in their minds have never been cleansed. Even while sitting on their meditation mats, they give rise to evil thoughts and perceptions, indulging in scattered, deluded thinking—craving worldly pleasures—so that they have nightmares at night and experience nocturnal emissions. These evil thoughts and defiled intentions permeate the fundamental storehouse consciousness, planting seeds of evil karma, where defilement obstructs purity. Thus, birth and death never cease, and the cycle of rebirth continues without end, bringing endless suffering. When the three actions (body, speech, and mind) are impure, they deviate from the Noble Eightfold Path. Appearing white on the outside but black within, they follow the eight wrong paths. This is called **wrong livelihood**, deceiving both ordinary beings and sages. By observing in this way, one attains a pure mind.

**Verse:** The life impure, in guise of pure, Seeks fame and gain, can't endure. Though acting calm, inside is wild, Like a painted demon, fair beguiled. With wakeful mind, one sees this true, And thus the pure heart can renew.
