1. Always diligently practice good deeds; do not waste time on idle worldly talk. 2. The method of filtering water: when the bucket first enters the well, stir the water first to disperse any insects. 3. Use three layers of fine silk to carefully filter the water. 4. The bucket must not scrape against the sides of the well as it is lowered or raised. 5. When the bucket reaches the well opening, carefully rinse the crossbar of the bucket with water before wiping it dry. 6. When filtering, as the bucket is lifted from the well, make sure no water drips outside the filter. 7. When pouring the water, do not let it splash into the rinsing basin. If any drops fall, re-filter the water. 8. In hot summer weather, insects may breed in water left overnight. Take water in the early morning; insects will appear by noon—filter it again without fail. 9. In severe winter freezing, do not filter water early in the morning—if the water touches the filter, the insects will freeze to death. 10. Only filter water when the sun is up and it is warm. The bucket and filter must be thoroughly rinsed inside and out so that all insects are removed. This is the complete method of water filtering—it is extremely difficult to do properly, and I have only briefly explained it here. 11. When gathering dry firewood or bamboo, if you suspect insects may be present, carefully split them open and inspect. 12. Always check fire and lamps to make sure no fire breaks out. 13. When washing undergarments, remove any lice and nits. 14. Use one basin for washing the feet and socks. 15. The basin used for washing clean robes must not be used for the feet or socks. 16. When drying clean robes, do not place them on a rack that has been touched by dirty items. 17. When washing clothes, rinse your hands with clean water before handling the bucket and ladle. 18. After washing, use clean water to rinse the basins and utensils so they are clean. 19. After washing your feet, pour clean water over your hands and feet again to ensure they are clean. 20. During hot summer weather, after using a water basin, rinse it and turn it upside down to dry—never leave it upright, for insects will breed. 21. Show proper respect at all times toward those above, below, and equal to you. 22. Never utter meaningless words in front of those above, below, or equal to you. 23. Do not speak vulgar or filthy words. 24. In all work you do, humbly ask the teacher for guidance and seek to develop wisdom and understanding. 25. Always keep in mind aging, sickness, and death; put effort into body, speech, and mind and practice the way of transcendence. 26. Always maintain a sense of shame and gratitude, remembering the four kinds of kindness, and offer aid to sentient beings in the three realms. 27. Consider encountering the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) as a rare and precious opportunity. 28. Contemplate the four foundations of mindfulness as taught in the Mahayana and Hinayana scriptures, and in every moment cultivate compassion and give rise to the bodhi mind. 29. Protect and care for the possessions of the Three Jewels—do not damage or lose them. 30. Do not place a wet bowl on a rope bed, wooden bed, or mat. 31. If you damage or waste any of the communal property of the Three Jewels, you must repay it with double. 32. Whenever you sit on a chair or bed, first check the legs. Do not sit if it is unbalanced. 33. If you find a rope bed or wooden bed left out in the open, bring it inside. 34. Do not place medicines or other items on a good bench exposed to the midday sun. 35. When moving a bed or chair, lift it—do not drag it. 36. Do not place a water bottle against a leaning pillar. 37. Always fasten the loops when wearing the kasaya (monastic robe). 38. Do not touch the kasaya with dirty hands. 39. When washing the kasaya, do not press it with your hands or trample it with your feet. 40. Do not hold water in your mouth and spray it onto the kasaya. 41. When folding the kasaya, do not hold it with your mouth or step on it. 42. Do not sit on the kasaya. 43. Before handling scriptures, always wash your hands with soapberry powder. 44. Dry your hands with a clean cloth; then air-dry the cloth. 45. Be aware of the cleanliness of beds and mats in the monastery—anything that is touched becomes dirtied and must be cleaned. 46. Wear the five-panel robe (or the seven-panel robe turned inside out) when doing chores or washing. 47. To clean a bed or mat, first remove dust and dirt, then wipe it with a damp cloth. 48. When receiving medicine, tea, salt, or any edible item, take only what you need and consume it fully. Do not accept too much and leave leftovers—this is a warning! Many people fall into this mistake. 49. When using a water ladle, the part that goes into the water is clean; the part you hold is dirty. Do not touch the clean part with your hand. 50. If someone is ill, care for them with compassion from beginning to end. When someone is sleeping in the room, do not make noise by hitting objects or laughing loudly. 51. If you return to the monastery and find the gate closed, knock gently—do not startle anyone. 52. When leaving the monastery, inform the resident monks of where you are going. 53. When you feel the need to relieve yourself, go without delay—do not wait until the last moment and cause trouble. 54. Hold the water bottle with palms joined together—do not let your arms hang at your sides, lest your robe touch the bottle's bottom. 55. When closing doors and gates, be meticulous—do not be careless, or you may cause loss or damage.
