> I. Awareness of the arising and passing of desires should be addressed early—do not wait until the last moment and lose your composure. II. You must hold the water bottle with joined hands in a respectful manner—do not let it hang loosely at your side. III. When approaching the latrine, if you notice a senior practitioner nearby, you should respectfully avoid them. IV. Before entering the latrine, snap your fingers three times or clear your throat to ensure it is empty—only then may you enter. V. Adjust your robes according to the height of the area, squatting gradually while lifting the hem—do not hoist your robes up high in advance and expose your body. VI. In the darkness of night, use the cleansing stick to feel around inside the hole from front to back to gauge its width, length, and alignment. VII. Do not spit or blow your nose on the boards around the latrine or into the drainage channel. VIII. After using the cleansing stick, place it back into the latrine hole—do not set it on the edge or the floor. Never use paper with writing or sacred texts for this purpose. IX. When washing, hold the water bottle with care and cleanse yourself with water seven times. If you are not clean, you are not permitted to sit or lie on the monks' beds or mats. X. When using water, take care not to splash or wet the boards around the latrine opening. XI. In crowded places, if someone is waiting urgently outside, you should leave the latrine even if you have not quite finished. XII. When you remove your muddy footwear, do not place them where your clean shoes normally rest. XIII. For thorough washing, first use loess two or three times, then follow with fine soap or ash from bean pods. XIV. Always keep a cleansing stick at hand—never let it run out. XV. Regularly use ash first, then earth—never skimp on either. XVI. If you see the latrine is messy, sweep it clean. XVII. If the area inside and out is untidy, clean it up thoroughly. XVIII. If the wiping cloth is not clean, wash it until it is. XIX. If your muddy footwear is not clean, wash it until it is. XX. Do not leave the areas where ash and earth are used in a mess.
