> Chapter 2: Establishing Order Through Structure

> Although the \*One Hundred Matters Ritual Manual\* is relatively concise, when carefully examined, its meaning can be categorized into ten sections. It only lacks the single section on the Five Repentances. What are these ten? One: Purifying and preparing a clean practice room. Two: Purifying the three actions (body, speech, and mind). Three: Making offerings of incense and flowers. Four: Reciting mantras and making invitations. Five: Giving praise and expressing intention. Six: Reciting the names and making offerings. Seven: Paying homage to the Three Jewels. Eight: Practicing the Five Repentances. Nine: Circumambulating and taking refuge. Ten: Chanting and reciting the scriptures. This differs slightly from the arrangement found in the \*One Hundred Matters\*, as the sequence and divisions are not exactly the same, but a direct comparison will make the differences clear. Regarding the Five Repentances—this text places them according to the \*Sutra on Eradicating Karmic Obstacles\*. It only states the intention for establishing repentance but omits verses of praise. Now, following other ritual methods, I have used the Four Heavenly Kings' praises from the new sutra to fill this gap. Both the \*Samantabhadra\* and the \*Lotus\* practices include seated meditation, but this text only instructs chanting and recitation. I believe there is deep meaning in this, so I dare not make changes. If someone objects: "If that is the case, must the Five Repentances not be included at all? Was that also intentional?" The answer is: This case is different—it's simply an omission in the text. Some may argue: "If one chants straight through to the repentance section, that itself constitutes repentance." But that does not apply here either. In the combined \*Sutra on Eradicating Karmic Obstacles\*, each repentance is preceded by full ceremonial forms and reverent observance, \*then\* confession is made. Therefore, we know that the Five Repentances must be placed separately.
