Golden Light Repentance Supplementary Ritual (金光明懺法補助儀)

Sixth: Invoking the Three Jewels and the Method of Sprinkling (This sprinkling should generally be called "making offerings," as that includes the Three Jewels and the celestial beings. If one simply says "sprinkling," it is limited to offerings to the spirits, which is not fitting in principle. This has been briefly explained above. When practitioners wish to invoke the Three Jewels, they should join their palms, bow their heads, and recite three times in a level voice:)

Homage to the Buddha of Jeweled Lotus Radiance. Homage to the Golden Light Sutra. Homage to the great deity of supreme merit, Sri Mahadevi, who fulfills all undertakings.(After reciting this three times, next make sincere offerings, focusing your mind as if face to face with the deity. Then speak the words of petition. At other times, first remove food and drink and keep everything clean and pure according to the Dharma. Also, where the text speaks of scattering offerings and the like, simply recite from "incense and flowers" up to "together attain the wisdom of perfect Buddhahood," and then bow to the Buddha.)

Now in my place of practice I have arranged offerings. I light various lamps, burn various incenses, and present various foods and drinks, all pure and in accordance with the Dharma. With reverence I take these and present them as offerings to the buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, to the Mahayana sutras, to the bodhisattvas, and to all the noble and holy ones of the Three Treasures. I also separately prepare incense, flowers, food, and drink, and present them to the great deities of merit, to Mahādeva, to Sarasvatī, to the Four Heavenly Kings, to Brahmā and Śakra, and to the holy assembly of the eight classes of heavenly beings and dragons. I further take food and drink and scatter it in other directions as an offering to the various spirits. I pray only that the Three Treasures and the heavenly beings and sages, out of compassion for me and for all sentient beings, will accept these offerings. By the power of the Golden Light and the awe-inspiring spiritual power of the buddhas, may there appear in a single thought-moment all the buddha-fields of the ten directions, filling them like clouds and soaking them through like rain, broadly performing the Buddha's work and equally perfuming sentient beings, so that they bring forth the resolve for Enlightenment and together perfect the wisdom of all modes.

(This too should be spoken according to one's own intention; it is not necessary to recite these words exclusively. Having spoken thus, one should take the food and drink outside the place of practice to a clean spot and scatter it in the four directions. First say this:)

I now, in accordance with the teaching, make offerings to the Mahayana Three Treasures and to the auspicious great deities. Taking these various foods and drinks, I scatter and sprinkle them in all directions, universally offering them to all the spirits. May all you spirits, mighty and sovereign in your authority, in a single thought-moment gather from everywhere and each receive this Dharma-food, so that you are fully satisfied without lack, your bodily strength is keen and vigorous, and you firmly protect and guard, knowing what I seek. May you all together turn this merit and benefit to moisten all living beings everywhere, so that by natural karmic reward they may forever receive supreme bliss.

(When the vow has been made, immediately scatter the food in the four directions, imagining that immeasurable ghosts and spirits all come to receive and eat it. At that time one may recite the preceding spell, or simply say: "Namo Śrī Mahādevyā." Continue until the food is gone.)
