Collection of Mantras as Perfect Causes for Rebirth

Preface to the Collection on Rebirth Through the Perfect Cause of Secret Mantra

I humbly observe: the Dharani has no written form, yet it transcends the deepest mysteries beyond the reach of manifestation. The secret teachings have outward signs, spreading great benefit throughout the world. Therefore the Buddha realized the ineffable, opening the selfless illumination of the perfect mirror; the teachings transmit secret words, revealing spiritual power that surely brings results. A single character encompasses all, unifying the wondrous principles of a thousand gates. Many words penetrate deeply, gathering the essential meaning of the Five Divisions. It is the support of all virtues and the reliance of all living beings. To hold it in mind is to connect the heart in the present thought; to recite it is to extinguish accumulated burdens in this life. How wonderful! It frees one from the three realms of illusory existence, rescues one from the sevenfold perilous paths, raises one to the pure land of the Lotus Assembly, and sweeps away the clouded darkness of the sand-worlds. It compresses the three asamkhya kalpas into an instant, and the Five Wisdoms are fully revealed; it perfects the Six Perfections in a single moment, and the Ten Bodies are suddenly complete. Its merit is great, its virtue is perfect—so majestic that it cannot be conceived or discussed. When this secret scripture is compared with other teachings, it is like the towering Mount Sumeru rising above all other peaks, like the radiant light eclipsing all other illumination.

Zongshou, having long been burdened by accumulated karma and afflicted by illness for a long time, took refuge in the Buddha during spare moments from medicine and treatment. Thereupon I prayerfully beseeched the true compassion of the Buddha and repented for past deeds. With reverence I gathered ten thousand virtues to cleanse my heart and spirit. I have respectfully recorded the spiritually efficacious secret mantras from various sutras and compiled them into a single collection. I have entitled it "Secret Mantras: Perfect Causes for Rebirth." Wishing that this matter be widely transmitted and benefit both the hidden and the visible realms, I have commissioned eminent monks from the Western Regions and true companions from the Eastern lands to collate and verify it three times in both Chinese and Sanskrit texts, and to carve and print it for circulation, establishing it forever as an imperishable standard.

In the seventh year of Tianqing of the Great Xia, the year being Gengshen, on the full moon day of the first month of autumn, the Zhongshu Minister He Zongshou respectfully writes this preface.
