> Zhi Xian, whose lay surname was Zhao, was a native of Changshan. Her father, Zhen, served as the magistrate of Fuliu County. From a young age, Zhi Xian possessed refined conduct and stood firm in her principles. After becoming a nun, she kept her precepts meticulously; her spirit was deep and serene, pure and undistracted. The governor, Du, was a devout follower of Huang-Lao teachings and harbored hostility toward Buddhists. He issued an order to all monasteries, setting a date for an examination to weed out nuns, imposing strict criteria that were nearly impossible to meet. The younger nuns were terrified and fled in panic at the mere rumor. But Zhi Xian alone showed no fear; she went about her life as usual. Those gathered at the archery hall outside the city were all senior nuns. On the day of the test, among the large group of nuns, Zhi Xian was the only one who was young and strong. Du first tested Zhi Xian against his standards, and she surpassed them in every regard. Her appearance was elegant and pure, and her speech was eloquent and brilliant. Secretly nursing evil intentions, Du pressured Zhi Xian to stay alone with him. Recognizing his intent, she vowed not to violate the precepts or betray the Dharma, and would not cling to her life for its own sake. She spoke out firmly and refused him. Enraged, Du struck her with a knife, inflicting more than twenty wounds. She lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground. After Du left, she revived and redoubled her diligence, observing a strict vegetarian diet and rigorous ascetic practices. She had over a hundred disciples, and they lived together harmoniously as milk and water. Later, when Fu Jian usurped power and established his regime, he heard of her reputation and respected her deeply. He had a robe woven and embroidered for her, a task that took three years to complete, worth a million in value. Thereafter, she resided at the Western Temple in Sizhou, widely propagating the true Dharma and inspiring faithful practice. During the Taihe era of the Jin dynasty (c. 366–371 CE), when she was over seventy years old, she still recited the \*Sutra of the Correct Dharma\* (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) once each day and night. At the place where she lived, many birds gathered and roosted; when she walked in meditation, they would call out and follow her.
