> Dharma-yuan, whose family name was Lun, was a native of Zengcheng in Dongguan. During the ninth year of the Yuanjia era of the Liu Song dynasty, she was ten years old. Her younger sister, Dharma-cai, was nine and did not yet understand the scriptures. Suddenly, on the eighth day of the second month that year, both of them disappeared. After three days, they returned and spoke of having gone to the Pure Land and a celestial palace, where they saw the Buddha, who taught and transformed them. On the fifteenth day of the ninth month, they vanished again, returning after ten days. This time, they could write and speak foreign languages and recite scriptures, and they could understand and converse with people from the Western Regions with ease. On the fifteenth day of the first month of the following year, they disappeared once more. A worker in the fields saw them being carried aloft by the wind into the sky. Their parents, worried, offered sacrifices to the gods and prayed for blessings. After a full month, they finally returned. On their return, they had already left home to become nuns, wearing monastic robes and with their hair shaved off, and came back in that manner. They said they had seen the Buddha and bhikshunis, who told them, "Due to the karmic conditions from your past lives, you should become my disciples." The Buddha raised his hand and touched their heads, and their hair fell out on its own. He gave them their monastic names: the elder was called Dharma-yuan, and the younger Dharma-cai. Before sending them back, he said, "You may build a meditation hall, and I will give you scriptures and the Dharma." When they returned home, they immediately destroyed the shrines to the local deities, built a pure and simple retreat, and chanted and recited the scriptures day and night. Every evening, a five-colored light would flow and shine across the mountain peaks, like lanterns or candles. From then on, their appearance and conduct became elegant and refined, and their speech was clear and precise, surpassing even the best chanters of the capital. The provincial governors Wei Lang and Kong Mo both invited them to be supported and made offerings, and upon hearing their teachings, they were filled with reverence and awe. Because of this, the local people all turned to the true Dharma. Dharma-yuan passed away during the Jianyuan era at the age of fifty-six.
