### 華嚴寺妙智尼傳五

> \*\*Biography of Venerable Miaozhi of Huayan Temple, Part Five\*\*

妙智，本姓曹，河內人也。稟性柔明，陶心大化，執持禁範，如護明珠。心勤忍辱，與物無忤，雖有毀惱，必以和顏。下帷窮年，終日無悶，精達法相，物共宗之。禪堂初建，齊武皇帝勅請妙智講《勝鬘》、《淨名》，開題及講，帝數親臨，詔問無方。智連環剖析，初無遺滯，帝屢稱善，四眾雅服。齊竟陵文宣王疆界鍾山集葬名德。年六十四，建武二年卒葬于定林寺。南齊侍中瑯瑘王倫妻江氏為著石讚文序，立于墓左耳。

> Miaozhi, whose family name was Cao, was a native of Henei. By nature he was gentle and bright, and his mind was wholly devoted to the great transformation of Buddhism. He upheld the precepts and rules as carefully as if protecting a precious pearl. His mind was diligent in practicing patience, and he never clashed with others. Even when faced with slander or distress, he always responded with a kind expression. For years he would close his curtains and study tirelessly, never bored from morning to night. He had a profound understanding of the characteristics of all phenomena, and people universally looked to him as an authority. When the meditation hall was first established, Emperor Wu of Qi respectfully invited Miaozhi to give lectures on the \*Srimala Sutra\* and the \*Vimalakirti Sutra\*. From the opening of the topic through the entire series of talks, the emperor personally attended on numerous occasions, asking questions without any fixed pattern. Miaozhi would analyze each point with seamless precision, never leaving any confusion unresolved. The emperor repeatedly praised him, and the fourfold assembly was profoundly impressed. Prince Wenxuan of Jingling in the Qi dynasty set aside land at Zhongshan for the collective burial of renowned virtuous monastics. Miaozhi passed away at the age of sixty-four in the second year of the Jianwu reign, and was buried at Dinglin Temple. Jiang, the wife of Wang Lun, a Chamberlain in the Southern Qi court, composed a stone inscription and preface in his honor, which was erected to the left of his grave.
