> Biography of Nun Shi Faxuan of Zhaoming Temple, Shanyin — 14

> Fachuan, whose secular surname was Wang, was a native of Shan. His father, Daoji, had long devoted himself to the true Dharma. From childhood, Fachuan showed a desire to leave worldly life. At just seven years old, he began eating only vegetables and practicing strict self-discipline. By eighteen, he could recite the entire \*Lotus Sutra\* fluently from beginning to end and understood its deeper meaning. Whether sitting or lying down, he would often see a canopy covering him. Though matchmakers repeatedly came with proposals, he vowed never to marry. At twenty-four, his parents brought him to the Qiming Monastery in Shan to study under the nun Dele. There he formally renounced lay life and took up the precepts—and on that very day, the phantom canopy disappeared. He then read widely through the scriptures, plumbing their profound significance. After his ordination, all who saw his bright virtue and clear practice, whether in the countryside or the town, were filled with admiration. In the final years of the Liu Song dynasty, the Dharma Master Sengrou traveled through the eastern lands, lecturing on sutras and treatises. From Zhu and Sheng he made his way to the Yu Cave, sometimes ascending Lingyin, sometimes journeying to Gusu. Both Sengrou's insights into the Abhidharma and Huiji's mastery of the scriptures were fully unfolded by Fachuan, who grasped every subtle point and explored every hidden depth. During the Yongming era of the Qi dynasty, he further studied the \*Ten Recitations Vinaya\* under Dharma Master Huixi. Each day his nourishment grew, each month his vision expanded. He then moved to Zhaoming Monastery in Shanyin, where he lectured alternately on sutras and vinaya, his renown rising throughout Yue. He kept no personal wealth, using all donations to adorn and expand the monastery, crafting structures of such refined beauty they seemed the work of spirits. He also commissioned scriptures and cast images—nothing was left undone. The eminent figures of the time—Zhang Yuan of Wu, Yu Yong of Yingchuan, and Zhou Yong of Runan—all personally came to pay their respects. When Prince Baling of Qi, Xiao Zhaozhou, took up his post in Kuaiji, he offered generous support. Later, when Prince Hengyang of Liang, Yuan Jian, arrived in the region, he requested Fachuan to serve as his mother's teacher. He lived to the age of eighty-three, passing away in the fifteenth year of the Tianjian era of the Liang dynasty.
