The Commentary on the Lotus Sutra is a work orally delivered by the eminent Sui dynasty monk Master Zhiyi and recorded by his disciple Guanding. It is also known as The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra. This commentary represents the authoritative interpretation of the Lotus Sutra within the Tiantai school. Master Zhiyi employs the doctrinal classification system of the Five Periods and Eight Teachings to elucidate the supreme status of the Lotus Sutra within the Buddha’s entire lifetime of teaching. He systematically expounds core doctrines such as "Three Thousand Realms in a Single Thought" and the "Perfect Harmony of the Three Truths." This book is not only a milestone in the study of the Lotus Sutra but also established the theoretical foundation of the Tiantai school. It is revered as one of the "Three Great Works of Tiantai" and has exerted an extremely profound influence on the history of Chinese Buddhist thought. It holds an irreplaceable guiding significance for understanding the perfect and immediate teaching of Mahayana Buddhism.
