The New Bodhisattva Sutra is a Chinese Mahayana Buddhist scripture whose specific author is unknown. It is generally considered an apocryphal text that originated in China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. Emerging against a historical backdrop of social turmoil and frequent disasters, the sutra primarily promotes the merits of reciting the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and copying this scripture. It promises that devotees will be spared from calamities such as war and disease, and will receive the protection of Bodhisattvas. The text reflects the urgent longing of the people at that time for peace and stability in their present lives. In terms of Buddhist canon, although it was not included in the orthodox Tripitaka, as an important document of folk belief, it provides valuable historical material for studying the secularization of Chinese Buddhism and the religious lives of the common people. It exemplifies the widespread influence of Bodhisattva salvation beliefs among the populace.
