> All Buddhas in the ten directions praise Amitabha with one voice; all sentient beings set their minds on the Pure Land of Peace and Nourishment. This is because Dharmakara made the forty-eight great vows, which are beyond comparison; Shakyamuni expounded the sixteen contemplations, which are the most excellent practice. Both sharp and dull faculties are benefited, and principle and practice are cultivated together. These are the true causes for the nine grades of rebirth, and all become excellent companions on the three vehicles. The transmission has continued through the ages, and commentaries have flourished one after another. Gold and jade compete in brilliance, and orchids and chrysanthemums each have their own beauty. In richness of expression and breadth of meaning, I truly defer to the masters; in clarity of facts and illumination of principle, nothing matches this present commentary. Through the two lands as gateways to the path, the entire teachings are judged. Once the pure and the mixed are distinguished, the source and the branches are no longer confused. As for removing error and following truth, discarding the excessive and transmitting the authentic—look at the discussions of the past, they cannot be compared. But the jewel that shines at night is truly ashamed to be cast in darkness; the song of white snow is hard to hear for rustic ears. To indulge in feelings and deceive, to write casually in denigration—though many notes try to resolve the confusion, this text remains obstructed. Whenever I think of this, I am deeply grieved. Therefore, I venture to write, daring to call myself an author. I gather what the ancients saw and heard as a net for later learners. Not confused by heterodox views, I strive to cultivate correct contemplation. Suddenly realizing that this mind is Buddha, I together with you aspire to rebirth in the highest grade of the highest realm. Though empty space may be exhausted, this mind has no limit.

> At the time of the eighth year of the Chunxi era, in the year of Xinchou, during the summer retreat, I resided at the precepts platform on Nanhu. Here is the preface.
