> The Seven-Jewel Bathing Pool, Chapter 17

> Everywhere—inside and out, to the left and right—there are bathing pools. Some are ten yojanas wide, others twenty, thirty, even a hundred or a thousand yojanas, each equal in length, width, and depth, filled to the brim with the calm waters of the eight excellent qualities—pure, fragrant, and clean, tasting like sweet dew. Pools with golden beds have beds of white silver sand; pools with white silver beds have beds of golden sand. Pools with crystal beds have beds of lapis lazuli sand; pools with lapis lazuli beds have beds of crystal sand. Pools with coral beds have beds of amber sand; pools with amber beds have beds of coral sand. Pools with mother-of-pearl beds have beds of agate sand; pools with agate beds have beds of mother-of-pearl sand. Pools with white jade beds have beds of purple gold sand; pools with purple gold beds have beds of white jade sand. Some are made of two treasures, three treasures, up to seven treasures combined together. On the banks of these pools grow sandalwood trees, their flowers and leaves hanging down and spreading fragrance everywhere. Heavenly utpala flowers, kumuda flowers, padma flowers, and puṇḍarīka flowers—their mixed colors bright and lush—cover the water's surface. When the bodhisattvas and the assembly of voice-hearers enter these jeweled pools, if they wish the water to cover their feet, it covers their feet; if they wish it to reach their knees, it reaches their knees; if they wish it to reach their waist, it reaches their waist; if they wish it to reach their neck, it reaches their neck; if they wish it to cascade over their bodies, it cascades over their bodies; if they wish it to recede, it recedes. The water adjusts warm and cool naturally according to their wishes. It refreshes the spirit and delights the body, washing away the defilements of the mind. Clear and pure, it seems formless, yet the jeweled sand shines through—no depth is left unlit. Gentle ripples flow and swirl, pouring into one another, moving calmly and slowly, neither too slow nor too fast. The waves give rise to countless natural, wondrous sounds, and each being hears according to what suits them. Some hear the sound of the Buddha, some hear the sound of the Dharma, some hear the sound of the Saṅgha. Some hear the sound of stillness, the sound of emptiness and non-self, the sound of great compassion, the sound of the pāramitās. Some hear the sound of the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the unique dharmas; the sound of all superknowledges and wisdom; the sound of non-doing; the sound of non-arising and non-ceasing; the sound of the acceptance of non-arising; even the sound of the countless wondrous dharmas of sweet-dew anointment. Hearing such sounds, they rejoice immeasurably. These sounds accord with the pure, desire-free, tranquil, and true meaning; they accord with the power, fearlessness, and unique dharmas of the Three Treasures; they accord with the path practiced by bodhisattvas and voice-hearers of superknowledge and wisdom. There are no names for the sufferings of the three lower realms—only the sounds of natural joy. That is why this land is called Land of Peace and Bliss. Ananda, all those reborn in that Buddha's land are fully endowed with pure physical forms such as these, along with all wondrous sounds, spiritual powers, and merits.

> The fourteenth section up to this point explains the various adornments—jeweled trees, musical sounds, palaces, and bathing pools—along with the many kinds of Dharma joy experienced by all who see or hear them. This corresponds to the earlier vows: that no words of what is unwholesome would ever be heard, that all beings and things would be pure and adorned so that the Ten Powers are perceived, and that palaces, pools, and streams would be decorated with immeasurable splendor.
