> Core Principles of the Prajna and Pure Land Schools

> Prajna illustrates emptiness as dependent on conditionality. Although nature is empty, conditionality is not negated. The Pure Land illustrates conditionality as dependent on emptiness. Although conditioned, emptiness is not hindered. Thus, the two aspects—emptiness and existence—do not obstruct each other. Beyond this precisely, because of conditionality, emptiness exists; if not for conditionality, of what would we speak of emptiness? This means conditionality is the reason for emptiness. And because of emptiness, conditionality exists; if not for emptiness, how could conditionality arise? This means emptiness is the reason for conditionality. In this way, emptiness and existence not only do not obstruct each other, but they mutually accomplish each other. As the ancients said: "Myriad forms reach toward heaven; observe them yet they are colorless. A chorus of sounds shakes the earth; listen yet they are soundless. The more there is, the more it is empty; the more it is empty, the more there is." Since conditionality and emptiness occur simultaneously and naturally, there appears the dual nature of both extinguishing and both preserving. The simultaneous non-obstruction of dual extinguishing and dual preserving is the ultimate, perfectly integrated ineffable truth. This perfectly integrated ultimate truth is another name for the original mind-nature of each person. Thus, we know that all the various doors of prajna taught by the Buddha are simply revealing this original mind-nature. All the various doors of the Pure Land taught by the Buddha are also simply revealing this original mind-nature. From the original mind-nature flow all the various prajna and Pure Land Dharma doors, and all these doors point back to the original mind-nature. This is the meaning of: All flow from this Dharma realm, and all return to this Dharma realm. In the past, someone asked Master Yunqi: "How can Chan meditation and Pure Land recitation be fused together?" The master replied: "If they were two separate things, then fusion would be necessary." Ah! How profound these words are. Chan is the Pure Land's Chan; the Pure Land is Chan's Pure Land. They are not two things originally, so what need is there for fusion? Thus, since both the prajna and Pure Land doors are solely the original mind-nature, not only can there be no division, but there can also be no union. Even the concepts of division and union cannot be attached, so how could we discuss their mutual support or obstruction?
