> Surangama Sutra: Knowing Without Seeing

> The phrase "Knowledge without seeing" from the \*Śūraṅgama Sūtra\* is extremely essential and sublime, encompassing all other essential and sublime expressions. Why? Because it means that insight itself is to be left behind. It is the gate to the splendid mansion. It is the immediate cessation of the confused mind. It is the "not grasping" where even illusion is absent. It is hearing restored and the eye's cataract removed. It is returning to the state where nothing is attained. It is extinguishing delusion and realizing truth. It is the entirety of practice being inherent in nature. It is seeking the mind yet finding it utterly unobtainable. It is the empty mind that returns as a graduate. It is the child turning around to rejoin the father. It is the minister retreating to pay homage to the ruler. It is the father and child finding harmony. It is the ruler and minister uniting in truth. It is swiftly attaining Buddhahood with minimal effort. It is dependent arising's true birthlessness. It is the word "knowing"—the gateway to all wonders. It is attaining correct enlightenment in an instant. It is embodying the path of the effortless mind—the great rest. It is what all sages have known and transmitted to one another: that deluded thoughts have no intrinsic nature. It is directly leaping into the realm of the Tathāgata, then turning back with a serene smile at the worthy spiritual descendants. It is "if you choose not to return, you will not return; but once you are set to return, you have already returned"—who can dispute the breeze and moonlight of your native land? It is letting go and reaching home—what can that be likened to? There is not a single thing to offer to one's revered mother. It is knowing without knowing—not the denial of knowing as mere ignorance. It is seeing and hearing being no ordinary seeing or hearing—there is no other sight or sound to present to you. When the root is no longer established, the sense objects have no ground to rest on. With both root and object transcended, the radiant spirit shines alone. Meanings like these cannot be fully listed. These four lines alone encompass everything without remainder. This is what is meant by the crucial point: the Buddha-dharma is not a vast array of doctrines. If one can truly resonate with it in a single thought, that is the real turning of the entire sūtra. Ancient masters such as Ciming, Yuanquan, the Great Way, Qixian, Shun, and Guang Daozhe, after their great awakening, all engaged in such a practice. It is called the practice of the effortless mind, because it is the essential path for returning home and the secret key for realizing the ultimate truth.
