> Colophon: Chan Practitioner Dequan's Blood-Written Lotus Sutra

> Without a self yet possessing awareness — this is the Buddha’s wisdom. With a self yet remaining ignorant — this is the sentient being’s view. The wisdom of Buddhas and beings is not different; only a false self comes between them. The great root of delusion lies in the self, and what we love most about the self is the body. If a practitioner does not let go of attachment to the body and does not break the fixation on self, then how can the cycle of birth and death ever end? The cultivator De, with deep resolve, made vows for the nine grades of the Pure Land and wrote out the seven-scroll Lotus Sutra. With a cold, impersonal blade, he pierced his own body to draw out the blood that is so hard to part with. The blood from his ten fingertips was drained dry, yet his single mind remained unmoved. How magnificent! This is truly a courageous person who, in the boundless sea of suffering, suddenly empties the view of self and directly breaks free from birth and death. Ah! When the cultivator first gave rise to this intention, that was the moment of planting the lotus seed. As he gradually inscribed the sutra day by day, that was the growth of the lotus. When the seven scrolls were completed and the merit was fulfilled, that was the moment the lotus was fully radiant with light and fragrance. So now his pure cause for rebirth is already established. All that remains is to never forget his original vow, to focus his mind on reciting the Buddha’s name, and to wait until this life’s reward is exhausted and the lotus blooms in that land. At that time, he will see the Buddha and hear the Dharma, completing the cause and reaping the full fruit. Nevertheless, let me now ask the cultivator: At the moment when the sharp blade cut into the flesh and the blood ink flowed freely across the scroll, what was it that felt the pain and yet formed the characters? Was it awareness or ignorance? Was it self or not-self? Was it the Buddha’s wisdom or the view of sentient beings? If you are clear about this, then the Buddha-land is not far away, and the jeweled lotus is already in full bloom. But if you are not yet clear, please remember these words well, and take them to ask Amitabha himself.
