### 書蓮華經普門品後

> Colophon to the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra

題標妙法。何法也。品號普門。何門也。說者謂。一光東照。十界圓彰。隨類現身。應念脫苦。未為非是。特其末耳。直須未舉以前。向世尊開口不得處。大士回避不及時。親見法法此法。門門此門。正與麼時不與麼會。始具看經眼。否則入海算沙。執指為月。不唯埋沒己靈。見惜明眼。將恐普門。漸閉而妙法終隱矣。默超居土有見於此。得是經而裝帙之。屬綴數語。普為見聞隨喜者。震塗毒鼓。食少金剛。其意豈淺淺哉。

> The Wonder of the Dharma: What exactly is this Dharma? The Universal Gate: What exactly is this Gate? Some say that a single ray of light from the East illuminates the Ten Realms, revealing them all in perfect clarity, taking on countless forms to suit beings, and ending suffering the moment one calls out—this is not entirely wrong, but it only scratches the surface. The truth is, before a single word is spoken, when the World Honored One can say nothing, and when the Bodhisattva cannot turn away—that is when you must personally see that every Dharma is this Dharma, every Gate is this Gate. If you can understand it in the moment without clinging to that understanding, only then do you have the eye to read the sutras. Otherwise, you’ll be like one who counts the sands of the sea while missing the shore, or mistakes the pointing finger for the moon—not only burying your own spiritual nature, but also earning the pity of clear-sighted beings. In the end, the Universal Gate will slowly close, and the Wonder of the Dharma will forever remain hidden. Venerable Mochao, perceiving this truth, obtained this sutra and reverently enshrined it. Entrusting a few words to me, I share this universally with all who see, hear, and rejoice—beating the poison-drum, savoring even a morsel of the indestructible. The intention here is anything but shallow.
