### 答江南彭二林居士書

> Reply to Layman Peng Erlin of Jiangnan

仰惟居士。深入淨宗。廣陳法施。自他並利。解行俱圓。可謂現居士身。修菩薩行。不違本願。不忘佛屬者矣。向得三經新論。妄為評題。不見罪責。已出分外。茲復寄示種種新刻。屬令論定。益覺赧顏。山野唯教乘大旨。粗知向方。而幼失問學。語不成文。故兩處住持。二十餘年。檀護之門。未投隻字。今感居士虗懷遠問。為法之誠。遂頓忘固陋。罄己所知。直詞以告。其當否去取。唯高明以自裁焉。念佛決疑兩論。皆發前人所未發。一以見慧解之超卓。一以彰衛道之真切。並沒量大人出格作用。可續入藏。永永流通。序䟦皆精當。間有可商之處。簽辯於後。

> Revered lay practitioner, you have delved deeply into the Pure Land dharma, widely spreading the gifts of teaching. You benefit both yourself and others, perfectly uniting understanding and practice. Truly, you can be said to embody the bodhisattva path while in lay form, without straying from your original vows or forgetting the Buddha’s instructions. Previously, when I received your “Three Sutras” commentaries, I offered some hasty remarks. Not only have you not blamed me, but you have now sent me various new works for review, which further embarrasses me. Although I, a mountain dweller, have a general grasp of the essential teachings of Buddhism, I lacked formal learning as a child and cannot write with elegance. Thus, during my twenty-plus years of stewardship in two monasteries, I have never written a single letter to any benefactor. But now, moved by your sincere and open questionings from afar, and your devoted commitment to the dharma, I have set aside my obstinacy and laid out all I know in direct words. Please, in your wisdom, decide what is right or wrong, and accept or reject freely. Your two essays, “Nianfo Jueyi Lun” and “Pure Land Questions and Doubts Awakened,” both break new ground where predecessors never trod. In one, you show transcendent wisdom; in the other, the true sincerity of upholding the dharma. These are extraordinary works by a person of boundless vision, worthy of inclusion in the canon for perpetual circulation. Your preface and colophon are both precise and fitting, with only a few areas worth reconsidering, as noted in the attached comments.
