### 與瑞一李居士書

> Letter to Layman Li Ruiyi

屢有書來。曾未覆答。師資心契。諒不我疑。聞在南中。竭力辦公。盡心護法。修持不輟。勸導維殷。此則自行化他。二利並舉。世法佛法。一道齊行。或雁信時通。或口󳬴傳誦。每一聞見。且慰且欣。因思道無不在。豈分朝野。而修證之際。實有易難。的論修道。出家尚不易。況在家耶。居家已難。況居官耶故知即塵勞為佛事。化熱惱作清涼。苟非忍證無生。位登不退。深入如來之室。權現宰官之身者。恐終不免塵緣漸染。而道念日微也。今賢契信向此道未久。便能於衝繁官署。猛切乃爾。非宿善根力。謂之何哉。雖然。猶須痛念三界無安。肉身苦惱。生死路險。人命無常。幸聞佛法。幸生信心。幻境幻緣。隻眼覰破。佛心佛行。赤體儋當。淨業得修且修。宦場可下便下。無少生留戀。無虗棄光陰。務期事辦一生。華開上品。庶幾不負自己多生熏習之善願。我佛長劫護念之慈恩。而成一世出世間之勇猛丈夫焉。

> You've written letters to me several times, but I haven't yet replied. When teacher and student understand each other's hearts, I doubt you will take offense at this. I hear that in the south you are diligent in your official duties, wholeheartedly protecting the Dharma, practicing without interruption, and earnestly guiding others. This is a dual cultivation of self-benefit and benefiting others, integrating worldly affairs with the Buddha's path. Whether through occasional correspondence or word of mouth, every time I hear of your work, I feel both comfort and joy. I reflect that the Way is everywhere, not limited to court or countryside. Yet when it comes to cultivation and realization, there are truly differences in ease and difficulty. Honestly speaking, even leaving home to practice is not easy, let alone practicing while living at home. Living at home is difficult enough, let alone holding an official position. Thus we know that if someone can transform worldly troubles into Buddha-work, and turn burning afflictions into cool clarity, unless they have realized the unborn, reached a stage of non-retrogression, deeply entered the Tathagata's room, and manifested as an official body for a time, I fear they will eventually be gradually tainted by worldly conditions, and their aspiration for the Way will diminish daily. Now, my good spiritual friend, you have believed and turned toward this path not long ago, yet you can practice so earnestly and intensely in the midst of a busy official post. If this is not due to the power of your wholesome roots from past lives, what else could it be? Nevertheless, you must still urgently reflect that the three realms offer no peace, the physical body brings suffering, the path of birth and death is perilous, and human life is impermanent. You are fortunate to have encountered the Buddha's teachings and generated faith. See through the illusions of phantom realms and phantom conditions. Take up the Buddha's mind and the Buddha's conduct with your naked body. Practice pure karma whenever you can; leave official life when it is appropriate. Have no trace of clinging, and waste not a moment of time. Be determined to accomplish this matter in this one lifetime, to bloom in the highest lotus rank. Then you will not betray the good vows you have cultivated over many lives, nor the compassionate kindness of the Buddha who has protected and cared for you throughout vast eons. Thus you will become a courageous hero in both worldly and transcendent life.
