> A single recitation of "Amituofo"— the essential teaching of all Buddhas. It reaches across the Five Periods of teaching, and encompasses the Eight Divisions of doctrine. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— what is its meaning? Those who truly understand are rare; those who hear it and misunderstand are many. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— its meaning is perfectly clear. Like a snake imagined in a bowstring's shadow, or medicine taken from a golden bottle. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— a skillful means with many names. It gathers all beings of every kind, and opens a single path for all. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it opens the gate to the Pure Land. This is abundant merit and virtue, not a shallow wholesome root. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— at the end of life, the Buddha appears. Proclaimed directly by the Four Wisdoms, and praised by the Buddhas of the six directions. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the standard for becoming a Buddha. With the mind of recitation, one enters the state of patient acceptance of non-arising. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it realises the three types of non-retrogression. In this very life, one can take a seat in the Buddha's position. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the great mirror of perfect wisdom. Embodiment and land are both reflected within, layer upon layer, shining and merging. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the emptiness Tathagatagarbha. Before any phenomenon has taken form, true reality has no marks at all. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is perfect complete enlightenment. Above the heavens, there is nothing higher; clouds cannot reach its height. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the great final Nirvana. Like a single bright moon, and a vast sky of cold emptiness. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it opens the door to Prajna wisdom. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the entire Tripitaka of scriptures, with all its horizontal and vertical patterns of words, an absolute, profound, and mysterious truth. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the entire Tripitaka of discipline, and with an instant of a pure mind, the perfection of moral precepts is attained. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the entire Tripitaka of treatises, and when the mind opens in that very thought, the light of wisdom bursts forth like a fountain. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the entire secret Tripitaka. It reveals the original supernatural powers, and possesses great spiritual power. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it encompasses the entire Tripitaka. The light of discipline, concentration, and wisdom flows forth in endless measure. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— the rope was always made of hemp. But because one does not understand, they mistakenly suspect it is a snake. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— rarely heard and seldom seen. It appears as an image in a mirror-forest, and resounds like heavenly drums. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— no metaphor can fully describe it. Like an ancient mirror on its stand, or mercury falling to the ground. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— the compassionate heart takes such pains. Like driving a ship of ten thousand bushels, or drawing a bow of a thousand pounds. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is clearly and truly existent. With the four modes of reasoning and the eight sounds of the Buddha's voice, a compassionate heart speaks with bitter sincerity. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is clearly and truly non-existent. All the myriad images are melted and cast into my great furnace. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is neither existence nor non-existence. Like mountains and rivers in a dream, or willow blossoms in a mirror. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is not existence and not non-existence. Press it, and it turns; a gourd floating on the water. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is the ultimate truth. It goes beyond all negations, so how could it fall into the four propositions? A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it wonderfully perfects the three truths. It is the most refreshing cooling pond, yet also a blazing mass of fire. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it attains great freedom. It transforms the sacred and the ordinary, and harmonizes all worlds. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— those with merit are rewarded. The king's feast is spread before us; the pearl in the topknot is in our hand. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— a virtuous neighborhood is beautiful. One should choose to dwell and come home, for a withered tree is not a ghost. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— it is neither difficult nor easy. The essential provisions along the path are faith, vows, and practice. A single recitation of "Amituofo"— the key is deep faith. The lotus of the nine grades sprouts from this mind.
