Scholar Zhang Zhuo, while reading the Sutra of Buddha Names, asked Chan Master Shen of Changsha, "I've heard the names of all the hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, but where exactly do they live?" The Master replied, "After the famous yellow crane tower poem by Cui Hao was inscribed, have you ever written a poem for it yourself?" Zhang said, "No, I haven't." The Master said, "Well, if you have nothing to do, you might as well inscribe one."

The Buddha's Eye said to the assembly: "A scholar once asked, 'In which land do the Buddhas reside?' Why did Changsha respond in such a way? This scholar was usually skilled at playing with words and poetry, so why was he left speechless in front of Changsha? If it were the Yellow Crane Tower, what would be so difficult about that? Let me break it down for you." He then recited:

"His countenance is most wondrous and subtle, His light illumines the ten directions. In the past, I made offerings to him, And now I come to behold him once again."

Nantang Jing said: "If it had been me at that time, when the scholar asked, 'We have only heard the names of countless Buddhas—where do they actually dwell?' I would have simply said, 'Scholar, scholar, why do you value what you hear but disregard what you see?'"

Master Sixin's Verse: At Yellow Crane Tower, when the Dharma was being contested, Hundreds and thousands of Buddhas raised white flags and surrendered. No homeland does he inhabit—where does he dwell? Leaving behind only the talent of a single poem.

Master Lingyuan Qing's Verse: Upon hearing his name, it directly shakes heaven and earth. If you further ask, "Where does he reside?"—you've grown old. Turning your head, you step back onto the path homeward: At every family's gate, you can pass straight through to Chang'an.

Master Nanhua Bǐng's Verse: Hundreds and thousands of Buddhas have long heard his name. A majestic land—where do you seek it? If your penetrating eye is not clear before you, You'll follow the boatman downstream to Yangzhou.

Master Heshan Fang's Verse: Do not seek elsewhere the traces of a thousand Buddhas. The turning mechanism of Changsha comes with reason. Know that it's hard to hide what's right before your eyes: It is the Parrot Island beneath Yellow Crane Tower.

Master Baofeng Ming's Verse: One has only heard the names of hundreds and thousands of Buddhas. When has the Buddha-land ever not been readily at hand? You haven't returned of your own accord—return and you'll get it. Over five lakes' misty scenes, who is there to contend?

Master Dahong Sui's Verse: The Yellow Crane Tower poem was written by Cui Hao. Throughout ages past and present, its rhyme is hard to match. The moonlight of autumn skies is mirrored in a thousand rivers. The oriole's spring evening songs are heard everywhere.

Layman Pang once stood before Master Danxia with folded hands. After a moment, he turned and left. Danxia paid him no attention. Layman Pang returned and sat down, at which Danxia stood before him with folded hands. After a short while, Danxia entered the abbot's quarters. Layman Pang said, "You enter as I leave — there's still unfinished business here." Danxia replied, "This old man comes and goes. When will it ever end?" Layman Pang said, "You show absolutely no compassion." Danxia said, "Yet it was you who led this fellow to this state." Layman Pang asked, "What did you use to lead me?" Danxia then picked up Layman Pang's headscarf and said, "It looks just like an elderly monk's." Layman Pang took the headscarf and placed it on Danxia's head, saying, "And it looks just like a young layman's." Danxia responded with three shouts of assent. Layman Pang said, "You still have the flavor of former days." Danxia then threw away the headscarf and said, "It's identical to a black gauze cap." Layman Pang responded with three shouts of assent. Danxia said, "Why can't you forget that old flavor?" Layman Pang snapped his fingers three times and said, "It moves heaven and earth."

Chan Master Fojian Qin said: "When Danxia and Elder Pang met in the bustling marketplace, they clasped hands on the peaks of a thousand mountains. When they met on a thousand peaks, they clasped hands in the marketplace. It is like a bell in its frame: it sounds when struck. Strike it hard, it rings loud; strike it softly, it rings soft. The sound does not come from within the bell, nor does it arise from outside. But before it is struck, where is the sound? Each of you, return to your seats and investigate this."

Chan Master Dawei Zhi said: "Danxia and Elder Pang used their spiritual powers all day long, journeying everywhere. Their entire bodies filled the whole world. Do you understand? The thousand peaks end only at the foot of the great mountain; the ten thousand streams melt together when they reach the sea."

Chan Master Tuzi Ce said: "Amidst the ordinary, there is steep danger. Where it is cut off, it continues again. Elder Pang knocked on the gate three times; Danxia blocked the pass three times. This can be called 'the wind blows and the grass bends, the water flows and the channel is formed.' But if you examine it closely, it is acceptable within the realm of Buddhist rituals. In the domain of a true practitioner, it is completely useless. What, then, is the domain of a true practitioner? Meeting face to face, the sharp point of the mind is like a flash of lightning. *Duck!*"

Cloud Gate Yan Chan Master asked a monk, "Does 'Brilliance shines everywhere, illuminating all the sands of the Ganges' come from Layman Zhang Zhuo's words?" The monk replied, "Yes." The master said, "Your words have fallen into error."
