Commentary on the Song of Enlightenment is the authoritative commentary by the Song Dynasty eminent monk Jinul on the Song of Enlightenment by the Chan Master Yongjia Xuanjue. This work emerged during the peak of Chinese Chan Buddhism, in which Jinul harmonized Chan practice with Huayan thought, systematically elucidating the core principles of sudden awakening to one’s true nature, stages of cultivation, and the unity of Chan and scriptural teaching. Its content clearly and profoundly interprets the realization of mind and nature, the path of practice, and the harmonious integration of ultimate and conventional truths, combining theoretical depth with practical guidance. As an important commentary within the Chan tradition, it not only promoted the development of Korean Seon practice but also became a model work integrating doctrinal teaching and Chan in East Asian Buddhism, exerting a profound influence on the history of Buddhist thought in East Asia.
