右總二十家 如雲臥紀談物初賸語。並云。賾藏主所蒐二十二家(止此)。然則此本少二(總序亦云二十二家)。
On the right, there are twenty houses in total, as recorded in the *Yunwo Jitan* and *Wuchu Shengyu*. Both say that the canon-keeper Ze collected twenty-two houses. This being so, the present edition is missing two. The general preface also says twenty-two houses.
古刊(每半面十二行。每行廿字或廿一二三四字不齊)第一卷(總九十二丈)第二卷(總九十丈)第三卷(總九十四丈)第四卷(總九十一丈)總三百六十七張。
Old edition: twelve lines per half page. Each line has twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, or twenty-four characters, varying irregularly. Volume One: ninety-two sheets in total. Volume Two: ninety sheets in total. Volume Three: ninety-four sheets in total. Volume Four: ninety-one sheets in total. Three hundred sixty-seven sheets in total.
雲臥紀談上(十一丈)曰。福州鼓山。於紹興之初。刊行古尊宿語錄。二十有二。洪之翠巖芝禪師者。其一焉。
Cloud Dwelling Conversations, Part One, says: In the early years of the Shaoxing era, at Gushan in Fuzhou, a collection of the sayings of ancient venerable masters was published in twenty-two volumes. Zen Master Zhi of Cuiyan in Hongzhou was one of them.
物祖謄語十三(十九丈)。重刊古尊宿語錄序曰。有賾藏主者。旁蒐廣採。僅得南泉而下二十二家示眾機語。厥後又得雲門真淨佛眼三家。總曰古尊宿語。非止乎此也。據其所搜採而言爾。
The thirteenth discourse record of the Patriarch Caoxi, nineteen sections in total. The preface to the reprinted "Sayings of the Ancient Worthies" states: There was a certain Master Zang, a keeper of the canon, who searched far and wide and gathered only the instructional words to the assembly of twenty-two masters from Nanquan onward. Afterward, he also obtained three more houses—Yunmen, Zhenjing, and Foyan—and called the whole collection "The Sayings of the Ancient Worthies." It is not that these are all that exist; it is only that this is what his search and gathering yielded.
賾藏主刊行古尊宿語錄二十二家。有補於宗門多矣。惜不略敘其始末。為闕典。就中惟大隋趙州有行狀。 樞使懶窩大居士沈公。來殿是邦。權衡此道。一見謂住鼓山(德最)曰。雖傳燈廣燈續燈僧寶傳具載。而衲子未暇檢閱。卒讀則惘然不知宜。撮其大槩。標於卷首(德最)。謹略具其始終出處。有不載者。則闕焉。學者一覧。便見是亦一助也。淳熈戊戌臘月望日。
The editorial director Zang published the Recorded Sayings of Ancient Worthies in twenty-two editions. This has been of great benefit to the Zen tradition. Unfortunately, no brief account of its origins and development was included, which is a regrettable omission. Among these, only the records of Great Sui and Zhaozhou have biographical accounts. The lay devotee Shen, Minister of Military Affairs and Master of the Lazy Nest, came to this temple and weighed matters of the Way. Upon seeing this, he said to Dezui, abbot of Gushan: "Although the Transmission of the Lamp, the Expanded Transmission of the Lamp, the Continued Transmission of the Lamp, and the Biographies of the Sangha Treasure all contain these records, monks have no time to examine them thoroughly. Reading them hastily, they remain confused and do not know what to make of them. You should select the essential points and place them at the beginning of each volume." Dezui respectfully provided a brief account of each master's life and whereabouts. Where information was not recorded, it has been left out. This will allow students to grasp the essentials at a single glance, and serves as a helpful aid. Written on the full moon day of the twelfth month in the wuxu year of the Chunxi era.
