> Preface to the Sayings of the First Generation Great Master of Spiritual Power, Dingye Meditation Monastery, Zihu Mountain, Quzhou

> Third Patriarch, bestowed Purple Robe for Dharma Transmission, Written by Huijue

> Here is the modern English translation of the provided Buddhist text: --- Long ago, there was the great Master Shenli, also known by his monastic name Lizong. He was known for his extraordinary conduct and his warm presence in the monastic community. From the Tang dynasty to the present day, nearly three hundred years have passed. Yet the teachings he gave at his seat have long been forgotten, and his words have not been heard in the world. What has been passed down is only a saying about a dog. In the third year of the Yuanfeng era (1080), I came to preside over this seat. I then searched for his teachings, but could not find them. One day, I went to the Dayun Shiyuan Monastery and found a small manuscript. As I opened and read it, I savored its content. I saw that its words were direct and its principles profound—like a single drop of ambrosia that can dispel the effects of six bushels of donkey's milk. Truly, he was the legitimate heir of Nanquan. The text had many errors and corruptions. I therefore went through it carefully, corrected the mistakes, and had it carved into woodblocks for circulation. This is not only to honor the remarkable events of that time, but also to benefit those who come after us. Written on the twelfth day of the fifth month in the sixth year of the Yuanfeng era (1083).
