> Case 32: Shanglan's Fundamental Nature<note>Responding to Conditions</note>

> The master addressed the assembly, saying: "One bowl comes, one bowl goes. One bowl does not come, one bowl stays. From the start, I have never cared for petty gains. With hands in my sleeves, I have nothing to do. Tell me, who is this person?"

> A monk asked Master Shanglan Chao, “What is the fundamental matter of Shanglan?” The Master said, “It is not borrowed from the thousand sages, nor sought through myriad actions.” The monk asked, “What about when there is neither borrowing nor seeking?” The Master said, “Can it be taken and placed in your hand?”

> The Master said: “Chan Master Ling Chao of Shanglan in Hongzhou first resided at Shanglan Mountain in Ruizhou, propagating the teaching of Master Jiashan. Many students gathered there. Later, he established a Chan monastery at Hongjing, still naming it Shanglan, and his teaching flourished even more. This monk, not keeping his own place, asked about others. Little did he know that even before he opened his mouth, he had already strayed from his true nature. How much more so when he stood with folded hands and feet, stepping back and forth, seeking answers from others at the edge of the meditation bench—it was like someone counting another’s treasures while having not a single coin of his own. ‘One who does not practice the Dharma, though hearing much, is likewise.’ This is what is called meddling in worldly affairs, only adding to empty talk. Therefore, Shanglan, pouring out his heart, analyzed it for him: ‘Not borrowed from a thousand sages, how could it be sought through myriad activities?’ In truth, this essential matter—each and every one of you, undefiled and pure, neither increasing nor decreasing—is beyond grasp in emptiness. This monk, indeed like a dog chasing a clod of earth, then asked, ‘What about when not borrowing and not seeking?’ How could Shanglan avoid pointing out: ‘Can it be placed in your hand, O monk?’ His intention seemed to reproach him for not seeking beyond words, but foolishly searching around the tongue. Every detail missed, every point passed by. Had it not been for Danxia’s explicit explanation, it would have been even further and further away. Verse: \`\`\` The essential matter is originally complete and whole— Why borrow from sages or seek through various means? A dog chasing clods knows nothing of the lion’s roar; Stop the endless seeking—return to the source. \`\`\`

> A spark of pure awareness, wondrous and complete— Look closely where it shines, without a trace. Within it, neither right nor wrong— This side or that, none can ever meet it. Jeweled peak's auspicious grass, rootless and free— See how you might grasp it? It needs no spring's labor to bloom fresh and bright— But if it drifts into your sight, it's harder still to let it go.
