Wansong's Commentary on Jue's Ancient Cases

Third Case: Baizhang Ascends the Platform

Master Baizhang ascended the platform. (His tricks exhausted) The assembly had just gathered. (What are they seeking?) With his staff, he swept them all away. (Who brought this about?) Then he called out: "Assembly!" (Just right for settling scores) The assembly turned their heads. (Iron-faced) Baizhang said: "What is it?" (Truly they do not recognize)

Master Huangbo ascended the platform. (The sun of the sixth month brings heat everywhere) The assembly had just gathered. (Chasing after the herd) Then he called out: "Assembly!" (The great one attains freedom) The assembly turned their heads. (Every household has Guanyin) Huangbo said: "The moon is like a curved bow; little rain, much wind." (Do not say this mountain monk has not spoken)

Master Xuedou said: "If it were Xuedou gathering the assembly, I would simply drive them away with my staff and be done." (Yet there is still someone to gather them afterward)

Master Tiantong raised the case and said: "Setting a trap to catch a dove—(All day long you seek but do not find) Fishing with a straight hook—(Sometimes it comes of itself) Each has their own means of connecting with others and benefiting beings. (Apart from good causes, yet inviting bad results) But what about those who cannot be trapped and will not turn back when called?" (Right into Wan Song's trap) He struck the incense stand once with his staff. (Almost let it slip by)

The master said: Muzhou once addressed the assembly, saying: "I saw Baizhang, but he didn't know good from bad. Just as the great assembly had gathered, he drove them all away at once with his staff. Then he called out: 'Assembly!' When they turned their heads, Baizhang said: 'What is it? What is there to talk about?'"

A phrase that doesn't reveal its edge or bones, Issuing instructions before words are spoken. Advancing with mouth mumbling, I know you are utterly bewildered.

Guishan asked Yangshan: "Suppose someone asks: 'All sentient beings have only vast, boundless karmic consciousness, with no fundamental basis to rely on. How would you test this?'" Yangshan said: "If a monk comes, I immediately call out: 'So-and-so!' When the monk turns his head, I then say: 'What is it?' Just as he is about to deliberate, I tell him: 'Not only is karmic consciousness vast and boundless—there is also no fundamental basis to rely on.'" Guishan said: "Excellent!"

Prime Minister Shu of the great court said: "I attained a single phrase from Xuefeng, and became prime minister. This old fellow often says to people: 'What is it?'" Wansong said: "If you doubt, then go study elsewhere."

Huangbo said: "The moon is like a curved bow—little rain, much wind." (Southerners pray for rain, using this to divine.) He also said: "The moon is like an upturned tile—without seeking, it comes down by itself." (This refers to the calendar-makers' waxing and waning crescents.) Huangbo raised this to show the assembly—like a surgeon extracting a tooth without touching it with his hand. Muzhou's weighing of catty and tael still comes somewhat close.

Guyin Cong said: "The earlier part was truly extraordinary; the later part was a dragon's head but a snake's tail." Wansong said: "Great venerables of immeasurable stature—within the flow of words, they turn it around."

Tiansheng Tai said: "To kill a person, you must see blood." Wansong said: "Yet he lacks the sword that gives life."

Xuedou said: "What 'still comes close'? It simply isn't there. Though it's said 'without touching with the hand,' how can bone and blood be separated?" Xuedou took advantage of the dispersal and stopped—it would also be good to break his staff. He also said: "Or perhaps there is a hammer without a hole, exerting itself for the assembly, well able to shoulder the burden."

The Jeta Grove, washing feet and sitting cross-legged— Mountains, rivers, and the great earth forged of iron. Lonely and remote, perfectly round, Without edges or seams, a needle cannot enter. This is already drawing models and painting forms.

He also said: "It can encompass past and present, Seize and cut off heaven and earth." Then suddenly lifting his staff, he said: "Let one move pass." Wansong said: "No need to bring out the plants."

Tiantong raised it, saying: "Setting bait to seek a dove, A straight hook to fish. A straight hook catches fierce dragons, A curved hook catches frogs and toads." Xuedou presents it fully face-to-face— Still compared to Huating's hundred paces. He said: "A fishing line a thousand feet long, The intent is in the deep pool. Three inches from the hook— Why don't you speak?"

Wansong once cited Yunfeng Yue studying under Dayu Zhi. Before being allowed to offer incense and enter the room, he was made to tend the charcoal and rice, then served as hall monitor. Striking a bamboo basket against a basin, he suddenly had a great awakening, and only then saw how Master Zhi worked with people. Tiantong said: "Each has their own means of connecting with beings and benefiting life. My eye was originally correct; because of the teacher, it became distorted. Sprinkling sand in a clear eye—will he still accept it?"

Xuansha said: "A cage won't make it stay, A call won't make it turn its head. The ancient sages did not arrange things— To this day, there is no place to be."

Therefore Wansong said: "The sea is the dragon's world, The sky is the crane's homeland. The diamond circle— Leap and jump as you please."

Tiantong strikes the incense stand with his staff, The holy monk's skull shattered into fragments. Take care, everyone. Each of you, please be at ease.
