Wansong's Commentary on Jue's Ancient Cases

Case 6: Fadeng Opens the Hall

(He lifts the Dharma lamp as an emblem of the Dharma, opens the hall, and addresses the assembly:) The mountain monk originally wished to dwell secluded in a rocky cave. But because the Elder Qingliang left behind an unresolved koan, today I come forth to analyze it for him.

A monk asked, "What is this unresolved koan?" The lamp then struck him, saying: "When the ancestors fail to resolve it, the calamity extends to their descendants." The monk said, "Where does the fault lie?" The lamp replied, "The fault lies with me, extending to you."

Tiantong commented: If that monk were a true man, he would have stepped forward and overturned the meditation platform. Not only would he then have his own path to liberation, but he would also avoid seeing the ancestors' failure extending calamity to their descendants.

The Master said: "At Jinling Prefecture, the Pure Dharma Lamp Chan Master, whose monastic name was Taiqin, was by nature unrestrained and free-spirited. He didn’t bother with ordinary affairs, and the community looked down on him. Only Fayan recognized his potential. Fayan once asked the assembly: 'Who can untie the golden bell from a tiger’s neck?' No one could answer. Just then, Falun (Taiqin) arrived. Fayan asked him the same question. Falun replied: 'The one who tied it can untie it.' After Fayan passed away, Falun received an imperial decree to reside in the Pure Dharma Temple.

When he opened the hall to teach, he said to the assembly: 'This mountain monk originally wished to hide away in a rocky cave. But because the old master Liangqing (Fayan) left behind an unfinished case, I’ve come out today to analyze it for everyone.'

Falun was already carrying a three-hundred-pound iron cangue himself, yet he still wanted to show off, fighting across the provinces, threatening counties—utterly disregarding danger.

When Li Houzhu was still the Prince of Zheng, he first studied with Fayan. He asked Falun: 'What unfinished case did our late master have?' Falun replied: 'This one I’m analyzing right now.' The Prince stuck out his tongue in surprise. This shows that one who knows the Dharma is afraid.

This monk asked: 'What is the unfinished case?'

Falun struck him.

One man commits a crime, another innocent man receives the punishment. Shifting blame is not the skill of a master. Deflecting justice is dishonest.

If the ancestors couldn’t finish it, it falls on their descendants. But if the descendants fail, it also falls back on the ancestors.

This blow was due to Falun himself, but it entangled Fayan, like an upper beam being crooked. Since this monk was indecisive when he should have decided, he even asked: 'Where is my fault?' like clutching stolen goods while crying injustice. If nothing else, there can be no second chance. Falun should have fully applied the rule, yet he said: 'The fault is mine, but it affects you.'

Though they talk of Tathagata Chan, they haven’t even dreamt of Ancestral Chan.

Cuanyan Zhi said: 'Exerting oneself for the assembly leads to personal misfortune.' This truly hits the mark.

Yunfeng Yue said: 'This old fellow, in his giving and taking, seemed unprecedented. But when pressed, he ended up with a dragon’s head and a snake’s tail.'

Now, is there anyone who can act as the master for this context? Wansong said: 'Consider that the monk is old.'

Tiantong commented: 'If this monk were a man, he would have stepped forward and overturned the meditation bench. Not only would he have found his own path, but he wouldn’t have seen the ancestors’ failure affect their descendants. Falun analyzed. For this monk to overturn the meditation bench, Tiantong would have needed to watch his own step.'

If, under Wansong’s seat, someone suddenly appeared, I would drive him out with a big stick beyond the third gate.

Do you see where the Later Lord stuck out his tongue? (Dangerous!)"
