> Guangde's Sharpness

> The Master said: The case of Huìchè of Shímén in Xiāngzhōu – Tiāntóng once served as Guǎngdé. I now clarify it here; students should know this. A monk asked: “What is a truly sharp-witted person?” How could one not know that worldly intelligence and clever speech can actually become a hindrance? Being sharp-witted is not as good as being naïve. Yet, in the patriarchs’ tradition, they use a wisdom that is natural and without a teacher to investigate the mind and see the nature through Chán (Zen). This is different from the dull Zen of silent stillness, and far from the wild insight of those who merely cling to words. Master Tuān of Huátǎ said: “Lively and vibrant – this is not the same as ordinary sharpness.” The Layman Vimalakīrti thought to himself, while lying sick in bed: “Let Mañjuśrī come with the great assembly.” So, using his spiritual power, he emptied his room, removed all possessions and attendants, and left only a single bed, on which he lay in illness. Guǎngdé used this meaning to answer the monk – it seemed there was room for discussion. But after a second question and a second answer, it was already hard to grasp. The third time, he completely used the true style of a patch-robed monk. So Tiāntóng pointed it out in reverse order: “If someone understands this, I grant that they are sharp-witted.” If it is like this, then Wànsōng says: “I humbly step back.” Is this truly so? Wànsōng says: “The Master is above – no error.” Sūn Bīn was skilled in celestial patterns, divination, and tortoise-shell cracking. A crack forms an omen; the cross-shaped pattern opens without needing a single burn. Tiāntóng once said: “The spiritual tortoise has no trigram omen; Its empty shell need not be drilled.” So why today “seventy-two drillings leave no unfulfilled prediction”? If you know that fortune and misfortune all come from yourself, Then you will finally believe that yīn and yáng do not follow human desires.
